Come on now, the people who commented negatively on Sandglass...have you even watched the whole thing? There are many series that often start "slow" or "boring," but as you continue watching, you're like...dang. From the reviews it seems to be this kind of drama. Kind of reminds me of how I felt about Damo at first...starts a bit slow, but then things start getting interesting and then I realized there's more to it than I appreciated.
Ugly actors/actresses? Depends on your aesthetics. Several reviewers at YesAsia were like "wow they're hot!"
Boring? Other reviewers at YesAsia characterized it as dynamic, powerful, and exciting. Some proudly stated that this drama is what made them start to learn Korean. Again, it depends on which context and frame of mind you're watching from.
From the review at http://thesandglass.wo.to/
"Many other k-dramas after this one just copied the plot, or characters, or style of this great drama. A good example is the recent SBS hit, ALL IN. it [sic] just COPIED the skeleton of Sandglass."
Now I wouldn't go so far as saying All In "copied" from Sandglass, but I can see the author's point. From an artistic point of view, it's a seminal piece of work that influenced other dramas. I was going to vote for All In until I read that blurb in a review. Got me interested to see where All In got its inspiration.
Sandglass as a cultural landmark:
Traffic was noticeably lighter in S. Korea during the times the drama aired...between 45%-60%(!) viewership for the episodes...streets were vacant during the highest viewership episodes. This series became a common cultural reference point around watercoolers at work.
Maybe if you aren't S.Korean you might not identify with the drama as much, but at least you can appreciate it as a cultural landmark for them.
Rarity:
If this is English subbed, then it's doubly rare. At the YesAsia site there were customers complaining that not only did the publisher run out of print but also that it was not subbed in English or Chinese. So this is a gem indeed if we can get a subbed version! Please vote for Sandglass. As another member said, we can always get All In or some others voluntarily seeded.
I'm not dissing the other series. It's an excellent choice list. I just don't want people to be mislead by some of the comments made by other members until they can watch it for themselves and decide.

hehe, again dl'ed and watched them all.
I will do some last-minute-voting... again.
All In - coolest, most influential drama so far
The Sandglass / Moraeshigae - very interesting drama
Propose - one of the most boring so far
Yup, The Sandglass is very slow in the beginning but is very interesting and quite shaking in the middle. If you just like dramas for good looking actors... better stay away. This is serious drama based on real events.

Exactly. I fell asleep during the very first episode and nothing in that first episode made me want to continue watching. I'll be damned if I'm going to sit through another 3 or 4 episodes just to wait for the story to unfold.

| I'd vote for Sandglass too, but I'm going to download the smaller asf files from Totuta's site and give the show another try that way. Perhaps I'm in that "ugly people in slow serious dramas are cool and interesting" phase right now. And plus I like bashing hyped-up shows. If this show doesn't deliver I'll be the first to bash it later on. I wish Dae Jang Geum were among the options, though.
