You should check out Hauppauge video capture cards, they have capture cards with 125 channel cable ready tuners, hardware mpeg encoding, s-video input and stereo input. They also have HDTV and satellite cards as well. I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR250, which is a very nice capture card. For HD, go for the WinTV-HD. Another HDTV tuner / capture card is the MyHD MDP-130 from Macro Image Technology.

I don't know if you'll find these capture cards locally, you might have to do some internet shopping.

I really appreciate that information on hauppauge capture cards because I heard about them but couldn't find any clear or recent reviews on them. I look out for them.

None of the stores I visited had decent capture cards so I got them to order in a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR250. Well my capture card will hopefully arrive this Friday. Big Smile

What are you planning to capture, by the way?

TVB series (Hong Kong) mostly because that's the only asian dramas I have access to and if I also do DVD rips, I'll also only have TVB DVDs.

Do you think there's enough interest out there?

My WinTV-PVR250 didn't come in yesterday because they can't order it. Now I'm getting the WinTV-PVR350 which means I'm paying $100 extra. Sad

I finally got my Capture card today and will start experimenting. Since I'm starting a fansub group, I'm going to capture dramas and keep them as possible projects. Thank you to the people who provided answers to my questions.

I installed the card, updated the drivers and installed all the software & codecs. THe computer recognises the card but I can't get any channels Crying

I tried plugging in a simple antenna and it successfully scanned for channels but when i tried to watch, there was no picture or sound...nothing.

So I thought maybe the antenna was crap so I plugged in a digital set top box and still nothing.

I've read the instructions about 50 times now. I've done everything correctly but still nothing.

Can anyone help?

I thrown my two cents in.

Hauppauge is a wonder company that makes tv cards. I used a Hauppauge tv card for a few years before building my last system. I never got around to reinstalling it. When I built my new PC in December, I now use ATI All-in-Wonder X800XT simply because I do so much on my pc between gaming, video editing and of course typesetting.

Hauppauge is typically a straight tv card and not a video card until the ATI All-In-Wonder series. So if anyone is looking to purchase just a tv card might want to look into purchasing a Hauppauge over an ATI All-In-Wonder. Howerver, if a person is looking for a new video card that is also a tv card, I recommend the ATI All-In-Wonder line. And there is a huge difference in prices. I paid under $30 for the Hauppauge tv card about seven or eight years ago and over $200 for my ATI A-I-W a month ago. Ok, the hubby paid but you get the idea.

If I remember the Hauppauge set up, you'll need to make sure your line-in is actually unmuted in the sound volume. Double check to make sure you have all your cables installed correctly. It's been several years since I've owned one but I remember from the back of the video card was a port you were to plug in a cable, that comes with the card, and plug it into the input port of your sound card. I don't know if they still make Hauppauges that way but check to make sure that's the case or not.

What program are you using for tv capture? I have to say, the program that came with my card was a big POS. I suggest using one of the programs the raw providers use. I don't know what they use but I use iuVCR by iuLabs.
The program gives you so many more options than the default capture program that comes with the card. Maybe hauppage is different.

I tried a few different programs already but to no avail. I still get no picture or sound. Not even static. Crying

I'm going to try and put in in a different PCI slot to see if it works.

Update: I made some progress now. I can capture from an antenna source now but that's not what i want to do.

I can get picture from my chinese cable but no sound because there's an audio input hole in the capture card but no appropriate cable so I'm going to the shops tomorrow and see if i can find a cable.

I ended up using an audio cable going from my satellite receiver to the line-in jack on the sound card.

I bought an adapter, everythings working great! I'm so happy.

Now the only thing left is to wait for a new series to start because I'm already too late to cap the dramas right now.
