HEllo. I was just wondering is there a quick way to add the .srt files to the movie without re-encoding the whole thing. Also, how long is it taking you guys to re-encode a movie. I have a athalon xp2800 with a gig of memory and it takes several hours for me to encode the movie. I am using virtual dub. Thanks in advance and thanks for the subtitles!!! Saves my wife from having to stop the movie and explain what is going on all the time. hehe
Regards,
Ken

Ken,
If you're planning on using a computer to view the video, and you want to combine the SRT and AVI into one file without re-encoding, you can use VirtualDubMod to mux the two files into an OGM or MKV file. Personally I prefer MKV because it supports a broader array of video and audio codecs, SRT, SSA, and idx/sub format subtitles. and handles things like chapters better. So I will use MKVmerge (part of the mkvtoolnix package) for MKVs.
If you want to view the video, with subtitles, on a stand-alone player that supports AVIs (like the Philips DVD-642) and that player supports subtitles (the 642 does, I think), you will want to make sure the AVI and SRT are named the same and are in the same directory when you burn them to blank media.
If you want to use the two files to create a hardsubbed AVI, you will need to convert the SRT to SSA format, load the SSA into Vdub (or VDubMod or NanDub if the MP3 audio is VBR) using the subtitler filter, and re-encode the video in Full Processing mode (necessary when you use filters in any Vdub variant).
If you want to make a DVD, you will need to transcode the AVI to a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file using something like TMPGEnc. Then load that and the SRT into GUI for dvdauthor, to author the DVD. Then burn with whatever you have that will write authored DVDs to disc.
The SRT should be checked for errors like collisions, and blank lines after the timings, before doing any of these. SRTs loaded as an external softsub are allowed a great deal more latitude when it comes to errors like these; or, non-compliant tags that define things like position or color. They may play fine as externals on a computer. But apps that convert or mux them into another file are far less forgiving.

I've always wondered how to do this myself, so I am glad that someone asked this question. MifuneGoh, how would you convert SRT subs to SSA format? Thanks for the in-depth descriptions of the various things you can do with soft subbed videos ^^

Subtitle Workshop is good, especially for editing.
However, when I convert SRT to SSA I use SubRip. It's convenient because I can configure the font, style, colors, and spacing from the screen edges, and the app will remember those settings. That way converted subtitles will have a consistent appearance that I like.
After checking the SRT for errors and fixing them, I'll open SubRip, Set Output Format to Sub Station Alpha, load the SRT, and save the SSA.
Easy! ^_^

I didn't think you would be able to edit so much for the subtitle options. Thanks for the program recommendation. Using the program you use, does it have an option to check and fix errors in the SRT subtitles, or would I have to use another program for that? And sorry for all the questions. This would be the first time that I attempt to make a soft-subbed video a hard-subbed video, so this is all pretty new to me ^^;;

When I tried to add episodes 2 and 3 to VirtualDub, I got an error. It said:
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unkown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
Is there anyway that I can fix this problem so that I could add the subs with VirtualDub? Or is there an alternate way for me to add the subs using another prorgram that isn't difficult to use?

download FFDShow, it can decode XVID, along with DIVX and virtually everything else, and has an optional VFW plugin, which is installed by default(at leat in the 2005-12-21 release)
You can get it at afterdawn: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm
When you install it, just make sure VFW is checked, it should be by default.
Then you (should) be able to load the file into VirtualDub.
Also, VSFilter or VobSub can be used in VirtualDub to directly add an SRT file, without converting it to SSA.
Of course, it's best to check there's no color codes, unsupported placement tags, first. Otherwise it may not come out looking nice...
Hope that helped._________________

hi, I have a question about this... do I burn them as data ... 'cause I burned them as data w/ the subtitle as the same name. However, I can only view the avi file but not the sub ?? how come???

Wow, that program sounds like it can be really helpful to me! So, after I download it, I can just add the video file to VirtualDub again, and it should accept it? Or do I have to do something else after I install the program?
Thanks for the tip about VSFilter and VobSub too ^^

When the main menu shows up, you have to find the subtitle file and then select it by pressing the "subtitle" button on your remote. It will then say something like "Divx subtitle selected". After that, play the video file and it should work.
