I've made some softsubs for a few of my JDramas, but I want to make them into hardsubs.
I've only got VirtualDub and Subtitle Workshop...
Is it possible to make hardsubs with these two programs?
Thanks a lot~

There is a program called SubMux which combines avi with subtitle file, and creates a new file. This isn't hard subbing though, it just combines the two files into one, and DirectVob still picks up the subtitle stream and renders it like normal.
No real advantages over having separate files though; why convert to hard subtitles anyway though? You loose quality by recompressing a DivX or XVid video stream, and it would take ages to process. Leave the subbing to the professionals I say - they make a proper job of it!
Check www.doom9.org if you want to pursue it though, they have some great tools for playing with AVIs.

Well, I'm starting up a subbing group with my friend.
I've never done it before, but I'm catching on quickly, so I needed to know how to make hardsubs.
Thanks~

You make hardsub file so that people can't make changes to subtitles when processing the video. When you have softsubs, anyone can make changes to the subtitle files, which is why most fansub groups like hardsubs.
As for recompressing the video, if you source is from DVD, the quality loss is minimal when compressing to DivX or Xvid as long as you know what settings are required and it doesn't take ages to process if you have a fast machine. Maybe a couple of hours, but not ages. If your source is DivX or Xvid, you can still add the subtitles without compressing the video using Virtualdub (go to www.videohelp.com for more guides/information).
@mechamiyachan: It's all about trial and error when it comes to hardsubbing, but once you figure it out, everything should be easy for you. Besides going to the fansubbing forums here, you should also go to the fansub groups and talk with the leaders of the groups so you can get an idea as to what tools they use to do their hardsubs._________________ D-Addicts is like a library: Most of the resources are there, you just have to search around!

Aahhh, I stand corrected. I thought you meant you just wanted to merge a soft sub stream with an episode, both downloaded from somewhere like here. I had that impulse when I downloaded Engine, and the set of soft subs, but decided there wasn't much point! If you're going for your own subtitling group that is a different matter.

Simply, I put it in the following context:
Soft subs - For the leechers and the anal rententive (corrections, customizing, etc.)
Hard subs - Its all about the fansubbers
In support of hard subs, there's some really cool things you can do with SSA/ASS that would not show simply by using vobsub or a video player with a built-in subtitle feature. Maybe for most drama fans this level of creativity isn't necessary (and in some cases it can be distracting.) But for most anime fans like myself, it is really neat to see creatively constructed hard subs put to work in a live drama.
Soft subs... It works, and it serve its purpose. But watching soft subs with no character to them (changing font type, color and size is NOT creative) is like watching an English-subbed Russian documentary on the African Zamungangada bungie jumping tribe.

I agree with Groink, well done hardsubs are a real value-added treat.
For an example of really ass-kicking hard-subbed goodness, beyond your wildest dreams, see any of Kaizoku-Fansubs One Piece releases. They do an awesome job of typesetting... Luffy's animated attack calls are a sight to behold.
For an awesome use of animation in karaoke, look at one of the recent episodes of Yakitate Japan from Anime-Empire... they have a cute little animated croissant fade thing that is brilliant.

Well, I've figured it out.
I took my softsub files and tried VirtualDub. It worked out great. (I chose the compression thing that takes a longer time, but still has great quality and such.) It took a while, but worked well...I hope I can upload it...
I checked around, and luckily, no one made hardsubs for Densha Otoko...That's the drama I was working on.
Episode 1 is finished, so I guess I'll go post about my new group. =D
Thanks a lot everyone!!

Hmm, actually there's a couple of groups whose hardsubbing Densha Otoko and 1 group finished the whole series already. It's just not posted on d-addicts, only on animesuki.

Following Ruroshin's guidelines... The hardsubbed post MUST be 100-percent original work - INCLUDING the translations. He doesn't allow you to upload hardsubbed work using soft subs from another person or fansubbing group UNLESS you obtain permission from the creator(s). Again, this is purely a D-Addicts guideline. Posting your work on any other tracker - D-Addicts can't say anything about it.
If you created the soft subs... And there isn't a hardsubbed version of the series on D-Addicts, then technically you can upload to D-A.
