tikleabubble, this is the best thing I think I've found about the commands of ssa/ass, it helped me out a lot, other than that I don't think there is a lot of other things that will help..
Also I think medusa subtitling station is the best for karaoke because it has a little window on the left with the video and the subs for you do look at and then the wav part on the right, though to check the timing you'll have to encode the video each time to check because if you just play the file with the subs it'll lag because of all the commands you add to the script.

@tikle: Now that you are able to time, try playing with the codes listed on the link Lowest gave above. It may seem like Greek at first, but the examples near the end (w/ wasabi) help you understand which codes do what. Plus at the bottom there are examples of which codes to use for the desired effect. Then manipulate variables and see what the differences are....
Taking one step at a time is easiest. Taking on too much at one time will mix you up. Since you hadn't known how to time karaoke at the beginning of this thread, it would've been difficult to code the thing right? It goes in order of what's easier to master.
Many times if you are playing with the codes, you'll end up with something you like and will be proud of, rather than asking someone to do it for you I suggest you keep tryin'
My main problem w/ trying to code it manually (w/out programs) was figuring out which codes to combine for which effects, like, what did what when put together. But, it's still neat to see what comes out of the test encodes. Most times I came out with "Why did THAT happen?", sometimes in a good way, sometimes not Usually what I tried for wasn't what I got, but sometimes it was still pretty cool anyway, lol._________________

I think maybe I understand now? I dunno, I'll take another shot, LOL. I guess it depends on the language you are working in, but with words (in English at least) it may be helpful to do individual letters when the words have a lot of consonants (like express).
Did you try just adding the {\k##} to precede each letter? Like I said in my last reply, you can add them manually (after switching karaoke mode on). Like this:
{\k##}e{\k##}x{\k##}p{\k##}r{\k##}e{\k##}s{\k##}s
(Again, for people just seeing this, ## should have numbers in it for your karaoke timing...I just put those instead of hypothetical numbers.)
I would think spacing the letters would allow it to do all needed {\k##}'s but maybe not. Still, you can throw in as many as needed. Timing it might be a bit harder, but it should work. The "transition", if I understand what ya mean, should then take place in karaoke with each letter then. It's all a matter of where the {\k##}'s are and how many there are.
If you are gonna change the effects instead of doing a standard outline or fill, it's gonna be a real **** You're gonna have even more codes all over the place. It'll be difficult to see and distinguish between codes and your letters of choice for the karaoke. I suggest you use Sabbu for something like that, because you can hide the codes in the line and make things easier to find. If you do a bounce, quick appear/fade, or something other than a standard outline or fade, it would probably be more suitable for doing just letters, IMHO. At least that's what it sounds like.
I dunno, keep us posted I guess _________________

I never thought about putting the {\k##} before each letter. Thanks for the little tips, I'll try it and yes it would be much harder to time it correctly. I'll better stick to the syllables transition lol
