It does transscription of the text and the timing.
depending on the quality of the source and your skill either you have to enter all text yourself or you can perform OCR after training some letters.

| can you show me how to use the OCR method? i've tried to look for a tutorial for OCR, but theres none. the interface of avisubdetector looks too complicated for a noob like me to figure out by myself.

I won't give you a tutorial here beacause (1) I wouldn't know where to start and (2) the last time I used ASD was several months ago. Just start playing around using ASD's manual mode and find out how to do the basic detection settings (like cropping, contrast, etc.). Then try the automatic mode. The OCR mode isn't that much different. It just further analyzes each detected subtitle line, divides it into sub pictures (the letters) and asks you what each letter means (the training phase). I didn't touched most of the settings within ASD myself.
Hint: there is no manual or tutorial for ASD I know of, but most buttons are self-explaining through tooltips. Just hover your mouse pointer over a button and wait a second unil they show up.

Alternatively you can try a recent version of SubRip which seems to support subtitle extraction from avi files too.
