Try this Chinese remedy, my mother-in-law makes me drink this when I am sick. Take Coca-cola, heat it up on the stove with a lot of chopped fresh ginger. After it has boiled for about 5 minutes, turn off the heat and add fresh lemon slices. I does seems weird but it really works. Oh and don't try it with Pepsi or any home brand cola... it's gross.

Can it be Diet Coke, or does it have to be Coca-Cola? I can't drink regular Coke because it has too much sugar....

And usually, you should stray away from caffeinated/carbonated beverages when you're sick because it dehydrates you....

^ No diet Coke...
I think that remedy with the Coke is supposed to work in part b/c of the sugar. Unfortunately, most soft drinks in the US uses high fructose corn syrup instead of real cane sugar, so how well it works here is debatable (you could always toss a couple pieces of sugar cane in the brew though) ^_^;;;
I'm pretty sure most overseas production of Coke uses real sugar though, so it should be fine there...

you're lucky your mom-in-law is from the civilized part of china. i had chinese relatives feeding me all kinds of barbaric remedies when i was young. one part mystery brew, hairs from a mountain goat, eye of newt, etc. Crazy

wasn't sure if the purpose was to heal me, or to make certain i never ask them for help again. they succeeded in the latter.

^^ Laugh
same here, only it was my mom doing it, and she's from taipei.... (i.e. a pretty damned civilized place ^_^;;; )
i've also been shocked by electricity by monks, stabbed by various needles, pinched, and otherwise physically tortured... Fear
but still, i think it kind of does work... ^_^;;;;;;;;;;;;;

as for sugar vs corn syrup...
yeah, the corn lobby in the US is waaaay strong...

Simply get lots of rest and sleep. And also make sure that you drink plenty of water. There's no real need to take medicine, unless it gets extremely bad and other parts of your system begins to be infected because of the cold.

What you can do is add plenty of honey to help the rest of your body along the way (and since it's natural sugar, it also breaks down much more easily), whilst your white blood cells are busy fighting off the virus. At the end of the day, you want to strengthen your immune system, so that you don't get sick all that often. And becoming dependent on medicine definitely doesn't help that battle. It's a short cut to take (sometimes...), if you're really busy and need to reach a deadline or so. But other than that, cure it with your own fight Big Smile. Cool cheers

I'm fairly certain I haven't had an actual cold in quite awhile...what I used to think were colds when I was younger were actually allergies. Now I take Clarinex and Nasonex, and I'm an amazingly healthy person.

My advice is to get tons of rest, stay hydrated, and try to get plenty of vitamin C. I used to take Sudafed for congestion, but it makes my heart race and gives me nightmares. I don't really have issues with congestion anymore, due to the Clarinex and Nasonex, but you could try Claritin. Afrin works like a miracle, but it makes your nose burn, and you can't use it for more than 3 days in a row, because if you use it longer, you're congestion will actually get worse. Robitussin DM is good for coughs....in case you can't sleep at night or are bothering others that you're living with. Only problem with that is that you need a dose every 4 hours.

Well, there's my two cents...now I'm going to go nurse myself because I think I have some sort of stomach bug.
