Even the English language editing and QC staff need to become scholars to work on historical/cultural material. When I was hoping to work as an editor on a sub project for a version of Journey To The West, I read the entire 2400 page English translation, and made notes, and even revised some of the poems. The project failed to materialise, unfortunately.

| Fortunately there is an ACCURATE and READABLE English translation of Three Kingdoms... Journey To The West has one that's accurate, and zero that are readable. Fortunately none of the television versions even tries to make clear distinctions between Taoist and Buddhist philosophy or tropes, they just mash everything all together.

All of these are Wuxia drama. I am dedicated to wuxia dramas. However, as many has pointed out, there are lots of challenges in subbing wuxia dramas:
* Long series. A typical wuxia drama is usually 30 episodes or more.
* Formal speech. Lots of them. Formal speech always use lots of words that you rarely find in modern language, especially in addressing (ling lang, qian jin, ben wang, bi xia, etc). And the use of Zhi (the one shaped like the letter Z) is pretty extensive (as opposed to rather sparingly in modern language).
* Constant reference to history, especially if it is history-related. Jin Yong's series almost always laced with history. I was forced to know some Chinese history (esp. Song era) when I was translating these dramas to understand the context of the speech.
* Constant reference to culture. Aside of martial arts, there are many other things in the drama requires some comprehension of culture. Example: The concept of xiao ("dedication, esp to parents / shifu") or ren ("endurance / patience"). I think some knowledge of Confucianism would help.
* Ancient literature. Boy, some dramas took phrases out of Books of Poem or Confucius teaching (reference: Legend of Condor Heroes 2003, one of Southern Emperor's disciple is actually reciting Confucius teaching), which is spelled in ancient Chinese. It's HARD!
* Deep knowledge of literature, especially poems and proverbs, which are used almost everywhere in wuxia dramas.
* Some knowledge of ancient characters, especially in weapon / martial arts style names. Sometimes also used in conjunction in poems. I encountered the word ji (how much) in ancient form (which means tea table).
Well, coupled with lack of spare time and lack of mates to do the translation with, I ended up doing the translation alone and the translation is quite stunted.
I'm looking forward for people who has interests in wuxia fansubbing. Maybe we can work out something together. In the mean time, I'd like to finish up Warriors of the Yang Clan. But I'm so busy at the moment. |
You pretty much summed everything up. 
I can probably put aside my Young Yang Warriors project and help you finish up your Warriors of the Yang Clan first. But are you doing the timing yourself? Cause I really hate to do timing since I suck at it. You can pm me to discuss how I can help you.
As for working out something with fellow wuxia fans, I think we should really start a dedicated wuxia fansub group ourselves. That way we can help out each other, try to sub more series and produce better and faster subs. However, I'm not sure if there will be enough people who are interested or how much I can contribute myself.

Ueda Jiro, thanks for your good will. But I think I got WotYC covered. It's only 6 episodes left, with eps 30 subtitle released last night.
The problem is the increasingly rare spare time. I don't know whether I can sub things like I used to be. But I'll try to help you whenever I could. But I can't promise you on that.
Wuxia fansubbing is good. Let's see whether we can form a group somehow. Or perhaps D-Fansub is willing to lend a hand?
About timing, try using VisualSubSync: http://visualsubsync.corecodec.org/

This program makes timing a breeze. Honest. As long as you install Vobsub (or K-lite mega codec, etc), you're set. It can deal with RMVB as well. See its tutorial.

well, good luck on translating wuxia series.
i know from my own experience that it is extremely hard especially for one who never reads up on chinese history. i remember i had to constantly check the facts on wikipedia back and forth when i worked on translating the commentary for Jackie Chan's "The Myth" and having to do it again for director Jeff Lau's "A Chinese Tall Story". i'm still not satisfied with "The Myth" because it didn't exactly go as smoothly as i intended since everything was rushed.

So I can take it that everyone agrees on starting a wuxia fansub group?
So far we have abcd99 (translator), crossvii (timer) and myself (translator), as well as the helpful D-Fansubs. We need to think up a group name, have someone as the coordinator and start recruiting more people. I'm definitely not suitable for the coordinator job though, just to let you know.

Let's decide the first project... Here's a few candidates:
Young Yang Warriors (Ueda Jiro's project)
Legend of Madame White Snake 2006 (in this case, we'll help D-Fansubs)
Treacherous Waters (Ni Shui Han, my project)
Flying Daggers (upped by nedayaj, great story)
Any other suggestions?
For Young Yang Warriors, I'd suggest that we obtain better raw (probably buy DVDs)... Or maybe Kai Lien already have a good raw?
