I don't see how it will: it rewards an clearly imperfect script...
It'll just prompt the writer to repeat the same errors. |
Thanks for taking my quote out of context! The script was better than most. |
It wasn't out of context at all.
Awards are supposed to be given for merit, not as motivation to do better the next time. |
I don't think there's such thing as a perfect script in the first place(nodame is ALMOST there, hehe)...And so there's an award for best script and not perfect script. Depends on how you would define 'best' and also the performance of the other nominees for that season. So obviously the voters have their own definition and it in is favor of Last Friends...Let's leave it at that.
In any case, congrats to Juri-chan~

Yep I agree on that point. Oh well - I didn't watch anything else in that season so fine for Last Friends to pick up a few awards (minus the best supporting actor one - what a load of bLAH)!!
Anyway, i'm all for Juri!!! HAHA
Btw, I recently watched Rainbow Song - I was so disappointed!! A waste of Juri!
Can't wait for more Juri films/dramas!!_________________ My blog - ramblings on my favourite J-dramas/movies/anime... http://yasashiisekai.wordpress.com/

Don't get me wrong - Juri did a great job and there were some touching moments but I felt that the story got off track (e.g. when the guy went out with that older woman who lied about her age - what was the pt of that?! It also put a negative impression on the guy) and the guy just didn't seem to deserve Juri!!
I feel that the director was trying to add a twist (whether this is by filming style like the use of segments or having tangential stories) to an otherwise very simple story. I think I would have enjoyed it much more if it was a more run off the mill romantic movie - simple and sweet.
Oh and I actually quite like the guy in this movie - I had high expectations - maybe that was the problem._________________ My blog - ramblings on my favourite J-dramas/movies/anime... http://yasashiisekai.wordpress.com/

Yes, the bottom line is, I'm very pleased and proud of Juri's performance in Last Friends. Congrats to her for adding yet another award to her impressive resume, and I expect more to come in future.
As for my 2 cents on whether the other awards are deserved for Last Friends.....welllll...yes and no. If a drama wins Best Drama, then usually Best Script and Best Direction goes with it. Change is the only realistic contender for the 3 awards other than Last Friends, but the less stellar than expected ratings (for a much hyped Kimutaku drama) might've hurt its chances. Compared to Change, Last Friends is "the little drama that could". No one expected this drama to grow into THE most talked about drama of the season, surpassing Change, and to draw heated debates from people who don't usually post - but it did just that. So I think Last Friends winning Best Drama makes for a better feel good result and is justifiable. No, it wasn't a perfect drama, but it was more ambitious than the rest, had a vision and gave us something different (Unlike say, Gokusen 3 - now that's a prime example of milking a formula to death. Ugh. ). Best Song is also expected (can anyone name another drama song that sticks in your head last spring? Not me. And no, Madonna's horrid song for Change just doesn't cut it. ).
The only iffy award here for Last Friends is Best Supporting Actor going to Ryo. *ahem* Not that Ryo wasn't effective in his role as the robotic, violent and stalkerish Sousuke, but there's hardly much complexity in the role. Eh. I really think Eita is more deserving of the award playing the perceptive, wounded and sensitive Takeru. Eita's Takeru was really the emotional center which carried the show, imo. His reaction shots in scenes with the other cast members (particularly Ruka and, to a lesser extent, Michiru) was priceless. It's too bad that even "respectable" awards shows are voted on a basis of acting+ popularity. Instead of judging purely on the peformance, judges are also swayed by who is acting in the role. You can't tell me that Takuya Kimura and Nakama Yukie won best actors based solely on their acting chops, and it had nothing to do with their overwhelming popularity. It's just like Julia Roberts winning the Oscars for playing against type over more talented but less popular actresses. Well, at least they get some awards right, but it's a rare occasion that they get everything right.

hanapyupyu: I'm with you on the point about awards shouldn't be based on popularity. Likewise, I have to admit that LF failed on executing the great ideas it started with. Oh well no pt to get too bogged down on it. I reckon LF was just great as it really showed the world what a great actress Juri is!!!
Btw, guys - a bit off the track but the same scriptwriter of Last Friends has landed herself another job! Let's see whether the one's going to be better...
Maki Horikita's "Innocent Love"
Wed, August 20, 2008 (1:01am EDT)
Popular actress Maki Horikita has picked up her next lead drama role. She will star in the tentatively-titled "Innocent Love," scheduled to air in Fuji TV's flagship Monday night time slot this fall. As the title suggests, the show will be a romance story.
The script is an original work written by Taeko Asano, whose most recent hit was "Last Friends" this past spring. Like that show, "Innocent Love" will focus on the lives of modern youths. The shows also share a director (Yusuke Kato) and a producer (Toshiyuki Nakano).
The story centers around the tragic heroine Kanon Akiyama (Horikita). As a child, she lost both her parents to a murderer, and her older brother was arrested as the prime suspect. Shunned by her town as the sister of a killer, she heads to Tokyo and picks up a job as a housecleaner. There, she has a fateful encounter with a man, but the road to romance is fraught with difficulty.
This will be Horikita's first time starring in Fuji TV's key time slot. Last year, her popularity skyrocketed due to a starring role in "Hanazakari no Kimitachi e." Currently, she appears in the NHK taiga drama "Atsuhime." That series doesn't finish filming until the end of September, so she will briefly be shooting simultaneously for "Atsuhime" and "Innocent Love."
"Innocent Love" will premiere in October.

Yep, yep, agreed with what hanapyupyu said. Both came from Fuji TV, but CHANGE was the one that people had high expectations on. Last Friends was kinda the underdog since it deals with 'unpopular' themes and not even a comedy. So naturally, there's no where to go but up from there. It's probably the only drama that can boast of that while the other heavyweights showed an increasingly downward trend. Looks like the 'cheap theatrics' worked and everyone needs to get their head examined.
But seriously speaking, Juri and Hikki's POL totally deserved the win. Someone even said that Juri's vote was 3 times more than the 2nd place(Fukatsu Eri) winner's~ For the other awards, I'm fine with them for the most part. As for the popularity vs capability issue, yeah, some of the results are obviously influenced by more than the actor's acting chops alone. But Juri has proven to be an actress that can be adored by the critics and at the same time loved by viewers young or old, male or female. ^^ Not something that can be claimed by those idol types popping up these days.
