I'm not up on the latest hardware. But that 4GB expansion capability is good advice, since Windows Vista just keeps growing and growing in size. Personally I like Sony (I'm a Sony Vaio owner) but I also like Dell as I'm a fan of their desktop PCs (own four of them.) I had to work with Dell support several times, and the experience was good.

Hewlett-Packard - I hate them with a PASSION!!!! Their consumer line of laptops and desktops feel and look cheap. They're also a crappy company to work with when you have hardware problems. If you enjoy speaking to unempathic androids with thick foreign accents and don't mind giving out your credit card number to them before they send you a replacement part, then maybe HP is a good place to do business.

How much money ya got?!?! Laugh

I would look into the Sony Vaio VGN-FZ4000. Price range is around $1300 depending on what you add to it. 15.4-inch widescreen display. It has Intel Core Duo, and can handle from 2.1 to 2.6GHz. It has a max of 4GB which is what you were hitting for. And it comes with Vista Home Premium. Minimum HD is 120GB which is more than enough for most people.

The AR series is a lot more expensive. It has 17-inch widescreen display. My Sony Vaio is also 17-inches and it is HUGE! I can't even fit it in my backpack.

Vaio is king. Always.

I'm all about portability and battery life. So look into the TZ series if you're willing to put in some extra cash (starts at $2200). 11.1" screen, less than 1" thick, 2.7lbs, and a 4 to 8.5 hour battery life on the STANDARD battery. My UMPC only gets 3 to 4 hours on the standard battery.

If it's too expensive, groink's suggestions are great. One note: I don't really think you'll need 4GB support. I think by the time you want to upgrade to 4GB, you'll be wanting a new laptop. I haven't messed around with Vista enough to know this for a fact, though.

This is very true. My Vaio can fry an egg! I bought one of those USB-powered laptop coolers. You can find these for around $20 to 40. You place the laptop on top, and it cools the laptop down A LOT!!!!
