Hi everyone!
I had a dumb question, please excuse my ignorance in advance! Recently, my ISP sent me a copyright notice saying that they've received a complaint from a content owner that my account has been using p2p to distribute copyrighted material (music, movies, software, television programs) and that they will terminate my account if this continues. I generally download Japanese stuff (music, tv shows, dramas) through bittorrent. I'm no expert in this at all, but by copyrighted material, they mean those protected by the U.S. law right? (omg I'm such a noob in all this) so like all the dramas on d-addicts here haven't been licensed so they're not protected? And that i can continue to download them without my account being terminated? What about all the jpopsuki stuff i download? ACK!! I'm nervous but I... I must download *eye and hand twitches*.
Edit: I forgot to mention that my roommate downloads American movies and TV shows. I know the complaint is about that, but what about the stuff I download... ?
This is the first place I thought of asking because I know there are many knowledgeable people here. I'm sorry if this is inappropriate. Please let me know and I'll delete this thread.

Thanks for the response furransu! ^^ I don't download American music, only Japanese. And Japanese songs that aren't licensed.

| Most of the countries have signed an international copyright treaty, which is why you see Japanese companies taking down their videos on youtube.

| I think it is just your roommate's downloads. But to be safe, you should probably ask your ISP what they mean by copyright content, and what their standards are for copyrighted content... then you'll get your answer for sure.

| They CAN be complaining about your Japanese downloads as well. Shows, music, etc. from Japan are illegal, really. I highly doubt that's what they're targeting though. Keep in mind that even if your friend/roommate stops downloading, if you have a higher amount of data transfer per month, they might be tipped off again. _________________ ...

There is difference between being licensed and being copyrighted. All the materials such as music and videos are copyrighted no matter where they are created and where you are living.
| Quote: | Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other, related rights. It is an intellectual property form (like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.

| Quote: | What is licensed anime?
Licensed anime is any series or movie (part or whole) for which the rights to publish the anime in a specific area have been bought. Simply put, if a company buys the rights to put an anime series or movie on TV and/or release it on DVD in the USA (in English), that anime series or movie is considered licensed anime by AnimeSuki. Note that of course it's also possible for anime series and movies to be licensed in other areas (such as Europe). Such licenses usually involve publishing in languages other than English though and therefore are of no interest to us.

The license thing was just an example but I'm sure you get the point.

Actually, even if you delete files those who track and look stuff from computers can find information whether you had something on your computer or not. The only way to make sure everything is gone is to destroy hard disk physically

Oh, that happened to me once when I was living in the college dorms and using Kazaa. That time I got caught for downloading American movies, well they didn't do anything but sent me a warning on my email. Thank god it was just a warning. Anyways, when that happened, I stopped using P2P clients and switched to bittorrent. I never got any copyright emails ever since. Heck I might be one of those people who pretty much downloads anything she can get her hands on, you should just not use P2P clients for such things. And they are also pretty slow compared to bittorrent.
Another alternative is to use MIRC, google is your friend to find the best channels in MIRC for where to download movies, music and pretty much anything online.
Like what some other people said, downloading so much will eventually eat up your hard drive space. For that matter, once a series or movie is complete, burn it or put it in an external hard drive._________________
