Ryokiteki na Kanojo [Eng Subs] (Complete)

There are some things that are just impossible to translate in this episode. I should say first of all that the opening scene with Saburo and Kensaku, I don't know exactly what the hit and miss is all about, but whoever lost the little game had to pick up the check, obviously.

Now the title of the book that Riko is writing is very difficult to write in kanji. Saburo first rewrites the title in hiragana, but Riko insists he write it in kanji. The title of the book is:

憂鬱な薔薇

(Yuuutsu na Bara) These characters have 15-29 strokes each, and, except the first one, are not part of the standard set of kanji that are taught in schools, which is why Saburo has a hard time with these.

Names are also difficult in Japanese and hers also contains a less than common kanji in the third character ri:

高見凛子

but is used in the word:

凛々しい

(ririshii), which means gallant.

I guess it's worth mentioning at this point that we have been using the Japanese order of family name first since the beginning of this series.

When Riko asks Saburo to go buy her the continuation of the book she is reading he buys the third part of the book. The reason for this is that he thinks there are only two parts to the book.

Japanese publishers will split up long works into smaller parts, usually 2 or 3. When they are split into two the are marked:
上 and 下 which correspond to Part 1 and 2 in English
When devided into thirds the are marked:
上 , 中 and 下 which correspond to Part 1, 2 and 3, but part 3 is marked the same as the end of a two part novel, so when he goes to buy the next part of the novel, he thinks it's a two part book and buys the conclusion.
