2004年7月2日から9月10日までTBS系で毎週金曜日22：00～22：54に放送（最終回は15分拡大）。全11回。平均視聴率15.9%。2004年9月17日には、その後の物語を描いたオリジナル特別編を放送。
映画版同様、大人になった主人公を重ね合わせたドラマ版独自のストーリー展開をしている。ザテレビジョンの第42回ドラマアカデミー賞（2004年夏クール）で最優秀作品賞を含む9冠を達成（主演男優賞:山田孝之、助演女優賞:綾瀬はるか、主題歌賞、新人俳優賞:田中幸太朗、脚本賞:森下佳子、監督賞:堤幸彦、石井康晴、平川雄一朗、キャスティング賞、タイトルバック賞）。また、第1回ソウル・ドラマアワーズ2006のシリーズドラマ部門の優秀賞・演出監督賞を受賞。
亜紀役を好演した綾瀬はるかの出世作となり、P&Gの「パンテーン」のCM出演やグラビアアイドルとしての露出はあったものの放送時にはまだ無名に近かったことから、ウェブのサーチエンジンの検索ワードのトップをキープしつづけた。
主演の山田孝之は恋愛ドラマの主役としても注目された。この作品から約1年後、オフィスクレッシェンドのメンバーを除いた同じスタッフで山田孝之主演、綾瀬はるかヒロインの白夜行でコンビを組む。
ロケ地となった松崎町は、ドラマで描かれた風景を求め、訪れる者が絶えない。道の駅伊豆のへそにはこれに関連して、他の伊豆方面でロケ撮影の行われた作品とともに、作中の小道具・大道具などの展示が行われている。
