Seems odd that "yuutsu" is listed as a difficult kanji, along with rose.
I thought that Haruhi Suzumiya and her melancholy would have educated all Japanese!

I suppose I'll never get a cute girl unless I master Kanji... Crying
And, guys, I also appreciate the yakuza talk education! salut

Thank you soooo much for Episode 3, guys! You people understand too much Japanese, it freaks me out...As I'm a total n00b in that language, I won't even notice any problems or possible little mistakes in the subs, lol. Thank you again!

I'm not familiar with the Haruhi Suzumiya reference, but generally a word like Yuuutsu would be written in hiragana and bara, like many plant and animal names, would be written in katakana. For one thing it's tedious to write that kind of thing and another is that it becomes time consuming. On a computer it's easy, but when writing by hand it's often not worth the trouble. Of course there is a big difference between reading and writing. I guess if you think of it in terms of spelling it might make more sense.

I'm not sure being kanji king is going to make the girls swoon though...

Actually the dictionary lists "waste" and "rub out" as well, which are probably more accurate translations since this is a somewhat more colorful word than simply "kill", but they also sort of imply guys with tommy guns.

Just out of curiosity, onidzuka: What dictionary are you using? Evidently it's way cooler than any of my dictionaries, so I want to get the one you have.

Cool

Yep, Saburo is turning out to be the resident chump. Nevertheless, you have to give him props for not getting his nuts kicked on the third episode. That was quite a good parry...

As someone unlearned in kanji, it is possible to pick up a word or two from anime or manga but recognizing the character is quite different from acquiring the skill to write it. So I imagine it could be difficult even for a native speaker to write down complicated characters even though people can readily identify it upon sight. As for impressing cute girls... if the girl doesn't know squat about kanji, you can miss a stroke or two, write gibberish even and no one would be the wiser. Whistling
