Subs for episode 3 are up. Here are some translation notes:

koukan nikki (shared diary): friends exchange their thoughts/feelings by writing in a shared diary that is passed back and forth
Hidden:

In the show Yuka comments on how these don't last long because one person eventually loses interest and starts writing vague, half-hearted entries. Meanwhile the other friend continues to take the diary seriously.

Yoshiwara: red-light district of the Edo-period
Kinokuniya Bunzaemon: famous Japanese merchant of the Edo period, known for splurging in Yoshiwara
Hidden:

Mamada-san compares Motoko's Harajuku shopping trip to Kinokuniya Bunzaemon's spending in Yoshiwara.

moeru gomi (burnable garbage): in Japan people sort their garbage by category - recyclable, burnable, non-burnable
Hidden:

At the end Yuka wonders if the hairball should be included with the burnable garbage.

Just wanted to say again thanks for continuing with this. I really like the show. I wish it was easier to get the raws (I have 1-3 now finally, though most of the episodes aren't seeded anymore. Though usually when a sub comes out someone seeds it for a little bit. Guess I'll have to wait until the subs come out). Anyway, this isn't as "high profile" a subbing project as other shows, but wanted you to know how much we appriciate you doing it. It's a great show!

Subs for episode 4 are up. Enjoy!

Here are some links about Hanshichi Torimono-cho, a series of detectives stories by Kido Okamoto that take place in the 1800s. It's referenced a lot in this episode...

Hanshichi Torimono-cho (overview)
Hanshichi Torimono-cho (review)
Kido Okamoto (author)

Hidden:

Yuka borrows the books. A detective visits Happiness Sancha. The police baton and 'goyou' lantern appear to be items from that era. Did I miss anything?

Episode 5 subs are up. We hope suika is getting you in the mood for summer!

Thanks to all that have helped with the seeding! More notes...

Menandoros - a Greek dramatist. a.k.a. Menander

shinso - here it means "being brought up with care in a good family". in Japanese characters it's written as a combination of "deep" and "window".
Hidden:

Mamada-san wonders why "deep window". he makes a (bad?) joke about how it might as well be "beef" and "window".

ochazuke - a dish of tea or broth with rice
Hidden:

Kizuna-san dreamed of eating ochazuke from a tea cup rather than a rice bowl.

and the watermelon postcard says...
Hidden:

the season of bright blue skies has come

Subs for episode 6 are up. Here are some notes/links:

--Yuka sings koi shite irun da mon by Shimakura Chiyoko while sweeping

--Obon - summer festival to honor dead ancestors

--Tsuchinoko - legendary snake-like creature

--mozuku - type of seaweed often served with vinegar. (Motoko's favorite.)

--onoroke - snack made of rice cracker (like senbei) wrapped around peanut. "noroke" means "to speak fondly of", which implies the peanut and cracker complement each other. (Baba's favorite?)
