Karaoke is quite like programming, you have to learn a lot of the commands to be able to do anything more then simple highlighting and once you have learnt how to do it, it takes hours to complete, textsub_plugin_faq_by_morphinex.txt is the best documentation I've ever read. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of help with it, I think because if you can't pick it up from the faq then you're not going to be able to with a tutorial (since the faq is quite extensive).
The only help I know of for karaoke is Crumja's tools and that Karaoke Creator v0.1.
Other than that there is Adobe After Effects which can do a lot of advanced things (like exploding words) without you having to spend 40 hours working on it, though it's not really liked by a lot of karaoke subbers (they consider it cheating :p and it's easier to send others .saa files).
Like others said the font and colours are important, a lot of the time spent on karaoke is searching for the right colours and fonts that match the show's themes and colours.
So basically if you want to do a good job you'll have to spend hours working on it, though the good thing is you only have to do it once for each series :p.
I found Medusa to be the best for karaoke because it has a little video window that shows the karaoke as well as the audio to help with timing it.

I didn't know After Effects could do that... Exploding words sounds pretty cool
I don't think I'm going to use any special effects for my project. I was hoping for a more advanced karaoke creator that automatically adds effect (with adjustable parameters), but I guess all subtitle programs are freeware, and pretty complicated. I'm thinking of making one for a fanvid, so not really worth spending hours over.
The gradient thing is a major pain too. Have to manually replace like 4 things for each line.
