Hope someone here can help me.
I dl a winrar-file which requires a password. Which I do have. Unfortunately the password has some Chinese charcters which are displayed as ??? at my PC. I tried to unzip the file at different PCs but still weren't able to succed. Sure I use an old Win System (ME) but I installed all IMEs. But when I put in the password in winrar only ??? appears. Btw. I never had problems when I unzipped a *zip which had a Chinese password. As far as I understand the problems have to do sth with the general language setting of my PC whereas winzip itself is able to read Chinese, japanese and other characters. So is there some programm that can help me?

Yeah I have tried to copy and paste. I also copied it into word to make sure I copy/paste it right and I did. But still it didn't work. Then I unset the hidden password and that's when I realized that the Chinese characters turned out funny.

I don't know a thing about windows ME ( never used it ) but have you tried to change the regional and language settings of your windows to Chinese ? ( Unicode if you can )
Other than that I can only think of a dual boot, where you have one in your native language and one in Chinese

Hmmm, not sure if I've done that before. For some Chinese websides I change the language settings coz they don't show up correctly. Is that what you mean?
a dual boot? sounds complicated. but thanks for the suggestion.

You can try UnzipThemAll (freeware) it can handle zip, rar and ace archives. It can handle password protected archives.
(Not crack them, you must provide the password.) Maybe it will accept your Chinese password correctly. At least worth a try.

A dual boot with 2 hard drives isn't complicated at all, just install a windows version on the other hard drive and it'll ask automatically which windows you would like to run each time you start up your computer.
If you have only 1 hard drive it'll be a little more complicated. You need to make a partition on your hard drive ( split it into 2 ) then you can install another operating system on there. For the rest it's the same as the previous.
If it were me I'd only do this if I often use Chinese programs and am fairly good in Chinese.
If you change the unicode into Chinese, everything will be Chinese, from the start button to every menu and program that you run.

@mt877
thanks for the tip. unzip them all does indeed accept Asian Characters. however I still can't open the file I think it has sth to do with the different encoding algorithm of a Western and a Asian PC. Even though I use the right Characters they might be encoded differently in an Chinese PC. Otherwise I don't understand why the PW is not accepted.
@Fated
unfortunately I only have 1 harddrive. And I am not that good with PCs that I dare to do a partion by myself. + I have to get an Chinese win first before I try to do that. Thanks for your help.

| Get winxp, because that's the only thing that has worked for me if you don't want to install a Chinese OS. I've tried with njstar communicator to convert the Chinese in different codes and none has worked. In winxp, all you have to do is change the language in the control panel and reboot your pc. Then you can just copy and paste the password, no need to type.

@alina
where do you live? I've tried to unzip it at the PC of sis (she has XP) and it didn't work. though the Asian languages features are all installed. I really wonder if the PCs in Europe encode differently or sth like that

I've got an English version of winxp. I don't think it's matter which version as long it has language support option for east asian languages. Are you sure you've got "install files for east asian language" enabled and in advanced you've got one the Chinese option checked.
I'll usually choose the HK sar option, because my files are usually passworded using tradtional chinese characters.
If you're really want to unzip that file try those Chinese options in advance, otherwise if it's easy to find I wouldn't waste so much time and search for another version instead.

I also thought that it wouldn't matter which version of XP I use. However I still can't open the rar-file. I'll check the Asian language pack at my sis' PC again. I used the TW option since the password is in traditional Chinese. Maybe I should try to use the HK sar option? Don't know wether there are any differences but since I can't get the file elsewhere, I have to try.

I came across this same problem. I know it is kind of late to reply, but if you or anyone else is having this problem, goto http://www.7-zip.org/ and download the exe and just c/p the chinese password when asked. Winrar doesn't support unicode very well as I have been told, but 7-zip supports it %100.
Good Luck, and tell me if it works out for you.

EDIT: Just tried it. Didnn't work. Get the message ... don't supported archive. Whatever that means.
