a solution that works with me:

1. uninstall all your codecs

2. install these two codec packs: K-Lite Codec Pack Full and CCCP (the latter replacing the old Matroska codec pack)

3. install VLC Media Player 0.8.6c and Winamp 5.35 (they both play x264 and .srt / .ssa subtitle files)
