In addition to the US population, US show can also be sold to all the English speaking countries, Not only that; the more popular US shows are dubbed and syndicated all over the world and recycled forever in some European markets. whereas Japanese shows are not in demand nearly as much, and the lan...

Even the better-looking doramas, like Jin, are made on the cheap, which results in whoppers like what you've described. I guess you're right. But what's strange is that they go out of their way to show handwritten documents on authentic-looking paper, sometimes even in cursive script. Must take a l...

I'm kind of confused that they often use modern kanji (新字体) instead of what was in use back in the Edo period when they show neatly written text. E.g. the 道 in 道名津, 黒 in 黒糖 etc. Seems like such a silly oversight that it must have been intentional, but why? Do they think their viewers are morons and ...

Well, content delivery for Ustream is handled by Akamai which I'd say is pretty rock-solid. Shouldn't really matter where you are.

Edit: Just to explain what this means: Akamai distributes and caches traffic so that you will be routed to a server that is close to you and not overloaded.

While that is certainly a sentiment that I can understand, it seems that most TV stations that broadcast live on the Internet right now use either Ustream or YouTube. Ustream uses Akamai and Google of course has its own servers all over the world. In other words, I think it is very unlikely that you...

Kafka on the Shore was not an easy read. I read it a while back and I am still trying to figure out some of the meaning. It's like the play 'Waiting for Godot." I thought it was great and entertaining but it did end somewhat prematurely and suddenly IMO. Also, his Japanese is pretty easy to un...

Right now I'm reading Murakami's 世界の終り~, the next book will probably be something by Isaka Kotaro (伊坂幸太郎). Any other recommendations for contemporary Japanese novelists?
