Ah, I think I get it... I am pretty much happy with the results of 2-pass (huge improvement over single pass). I see much bigger changes in gamma and color saturation after encoding than in signal-to-noise-ratio, so for me a little color tweaking is more important than trying to maximise PSNR. Ligh...
