I think studying a language for a test and communicating with that language have always been separate things. I'm amazed at how many people can become proficient in English through rote memorization and boring classes though, it makes me wonder if there's something wrong with me... I agree, studying...

A little off topic but I posted in the fansubbing section about finding Japanese scripts. If you are interested in studying Japanese by watching dramas, maybe it would be more helpful to have a script (something you can carry with you and study at your leisure). I was wondering how people translated...

I'd say 300 to 400 hours of watching and studying from dramas alone would give you a good understanding. Most of what you hear in a drama you won't hear in a classroom. However, taking a class with give you the grammar you most likely can't pick up on your own from simply watching tons and tons of d...

December 3 JLPT Anyone?
Anyone taking the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)?
If so, how are you studying and what level are you taking? For those who have taken it in the past, how did you prepare, how did you do, and what was your purpose for taking the test?
What country will you take the test in?
Cheers!

December 9th? Not really a big fan of the actors or the story myself, but I would watch it with some friends. I had no idea who Mika Nakashima was before I saw this one...

I generally like Kiyoshi Kurosawa movies, like Bright Future and Cure... The director of Dare Mo Shiranai (Nobody Knows) has a new movie out now, Hana Yori mo Naho . I have no idea if it's any good or not, it looks like some kind of jidageki. It's showing in Hong Kong now. Odagiri Joe is in a a few ...

Really? Most of us are from Europe and America? I don't think Japanese fashion differs that much from fashion in other Asian countries. If you mean Tokyo fashion there is a difference, but I wouldn't consider what you find in places like Harajuku or Shibuya to be representative of all of Japan. It w...

You word that question like it wouldn't take a lifetime to learn just one of them... Depending on your age and your native language, learning Chinese or Korean can take a very long time. If you don't have an immediate need or immediate environment where you can use the language expect to take 4 or 5...
