What about RSS feeds?

Just wondering.
It would be cool, if I could monitor D-addicts
activity (new torrents o forum messages) via RSS feeds,
like MM-BT http://bunko.theppn.org/

Moreover, I think thhis can save bandwidth, because
there is no need to load the full page

Yes I was thinking of doing something for RSS feeds but its rather low priority at this point. There are more fundamental things that needs fixing first.

The bandwidth save is insignificant compared to what we current have available but fear not RSS feed is on THE LIST of todo.

One might expect RSS to save bandwidth, but I read on one site the other day that they had to implement banning on their RSS feed because some broken clients would re-request the rss too frequently, and it pounded their server. So they started banning those IPs.

Just something to keep in mind.

The suprnova rss feeds ban your IP for a week if you request the rss feed more than once every 15 minutes over a long period of time

So that would be a solution that could be worked in here if need be

Also I don't think the main benefit of RSS is the bandwidth saving.. I think it's the convenience it will provide people with RSS auto torrent downloaders (like the plugin for azureus, or the standalone buttress)

Im all for the idea. Aside from the possibility of bandwidth saving, it gives a lot of convenience. I can easily glance at my desktop (with gdesklets RSS feed monitor) or whatever else you might use and see whats up.. saving me from forgetting to check every day and thereby starting a torrent after everyone finished it.. heheh...

I guess that a minimum of every 24hours should suffice for our addict needs. But over a long period of time 24h-48hours.
We aren't so addicted are we?

Ok I've turned on the RSS feed on the tracker. I didn't want it to feed off the main database because I think that would put too much stress on the server (at peak time the DB server load is already at 3-4 don't want to add to that) so its just going off the tracker's stored torrents filenames. So use descriptive filename or else ppl will be wondering what the heck the torrent is about.

Oh yeah since its running off the tracker it won't pick up external tracker torrents.

If you're using firefox you should see the RSS icon in the bottom right corner of the browser. Otherwise the xml can be found at http://d-addicts.net/rss/index.xml

Sweet! Whats the rules for using it? ie...how often do you want us to pull the feed?

I normally set the azureus rss feed plugin to check every 15min. Is that good enough? or would you prefer it to be higher?

^ probably 30 mins is better, torrents don't get uploaded THAT frequently here so 30 mins should be good enough.

some of jem's torrent use the d-addicts tracker.

Basically it won't pick up anything that doesn't have http://d-addicts.net:7979/announce as the announce or anything that has a "N/A" in the done column on the torrent page.

Hi, is the RSS feed working properly? I'm trying to fetch the feed with the FeedReader client, but it just claims the feed is empty. Looking the the source xml for the feed it looks like it's cut off?

looks like a properly well formed XML file to me and its also updating fine for my reader. Tried refreshing it?

Yeah

it's working great. Although RSSowl http://www.rssowl.org/ shows an error that it has problems with the encoding. Perhaps because of japanese/chinese file names? It's weird because it's working. I should try another reader.

When I use my rss feed scanner it updates fine and looks good -- until I try to download a torrent with it. Then it claims that the torrent file is empty with a 403 forbidden error. Looks to me like the urls for the torrent files are all pointing to non-existent files.

Take the torrent for Bright Girl Ep 15, for example. The rss feed points to the following url for the torrent:
http://d-addicts.net:7979/torrents/ece0 ... 3e.torrent
(this one doesn't work)

But if I download it like normal from the torrent thread (i.e., by clicking through the links from the torrent page), the url for the torrent file is as follows:
http://momusu.lunarpages.com/bt/torrent ... 15.torrent
(this one works fine)

I suppose this could be related to Ruroshin's plan to move the torrents off of lunarpages. Perhaps the RSS feed is pointing to urls that will be valid once the move is made but aren't yet? Anyway, just giving back a little feedback. Hope it helps.

"The link could not be saved. The web page might have been removed or had its name changed."

What gives, I wonder?

Doesn't work for me either. The feed is fine; I just can't directly download the torrent.

I've just came to know about this RSS for d-addicts and I just plugged it into my wordpress blog with the javascript feed reader that i created a year back.

For those who would like to include some "breaking news" display on your websites/blogs, you are invited to come download and install this software ( instantfeedreader).

I guess one important thing is to set the cache timing, so that excessive bandwidth suck is avoided, if your website/blog generates very very high traffic.

Uhmm... after the change with how you download the .torrent files the torrent links in the RSS feed is broken.

I'm using uTorrent and have it automatically download new torrents for series I want from the RSS feed, but now it doesn't work anymore.
Can you please try to fix this?

It would be REALLY REALLY cool to have search based RSS feeds for use with clients like Miro or TED. This way people can have their favorite shows download automatically.

If you use stored procedures/views and have properly indexed them, the database overhead should be very small, especially with a proper database (I believe even mySQL does this now, though anything else is always better)which will cache the query results. You should try it
