The other thing that I've always wondered was why do Khmers (guys in particular) of our parents generation who come to the United States or go to another Country to live go back to Cambodia to go find a wife?

I guess it's easier to do that than to find a date :lol I can't imagine doing that.
I know it's normal for them to do that, but I wanna know how the girls feel about this?

I mean the ones that they marry, I'm probably wrong, but I'd like to know if the khmer girls are so desperate to go the United States that they'll marry any guy who wants them.

and the guys always seem to marry a young pretty or beautiful khmer girl.

And do Single Khmer women do that too, go to Cambodia and marry a Khmer guy?
I'd be surprised if that happened cuz it doesn't seem like it would.

Snap, a lot of Khmer people here. Yup, count me in as well!!! A lot of you guys are from Long Beach. I have distant relatives there...a lady I call grandma, even thought I haven't the slightest idea how we're related. Something about her being my great grandmother's cousin? Oh well, yeah, I just wanted you guys to know that I went through some boxes and I found those kick ass chinese series on VHS. You know, the ones that are dubbed in Khmer....don't act like ya'll don't know.
And do Single Khmer women do that too, go to Cambodia and marry a Khmer guy?

You'd be surprise that it does happen here, and quite often. I'm from VA by the way. Nice to meet everyone!

I am mixed too. I do speak Khmer fluently, read very well, but probably can't write that well. It's been awhile. I am probably the oldest among you all, hehe. Anyway, I'll be moving to Korea for a year or so in a couple of months. I don't watch Korean dramas that much though. I prefer the Japanese dramas. I did buy the Full House DVD when I was in Hong Kong and China a couple of months ago. That was very good.

Hey! (Wow a Cambodian thread!)
I’m a mix also, I am part Chinese and part Cambodian and I was born in Thailand. I consider myself to be Cambodian, but when Chinese ppl meet me they think I’m Chinese (which I am, but I can’t speak it very well). People usually always think that I’m Korean, then when I say no they’ll go on to guess that I’m Japanese, then Chinese, but no one ever thinks that I’m Cambodian, b/c I have light skin. (Okay I think I’ll stop with my babbling now. . .) One last thing: Happy New Year!! (Can’t wait to eat all that good food!) :D

I was just wondering why she was insulting her own nationality, I mean u cant change the fact that u are born the way u are , as long as they are happy I dont see what it's so bad about owning a donut shop O.o.. :blink

1. You own, have relative who owns, or know someone who owns a DONUT SHOP!!! Ummm! not really, but okay.
2. You have a life time job at a donut shop. Lol! too bad i go to University
3. You still work at a donut shop on weekends even if you have a full time job outside. I wish! l love donuts
5. You live in Long Beach and/or you have relatives who live in Long Beach, or you go to Long Beach every weekend. True
6. You can't live without steamed rice. yea! you can for 4 months i've done it
7. You're darker than all your other Asian friends. Actually i'm pretty light
Look, i would find this funny if it related to being Cambodian in anyway, but to be honest it really doesn't. I've read better ones and more funnier ones! and this isn't one of them. Some of them don't even make sense. I know this is meant to be a joke, but it is more offensive than it is funny. Normal, Khmer people are not like that at all.

7. You're darker than all your other Asian friends.
8. You kick it with black people and other people think you're black too.
9. You hate the name Pol Pot.
10. The first cool thing you learned in America is how to break dance.
11. You hate it when people think Cambodians are the dirtiest Asians.
12. You own the old Toyota Cressida or an old Nissan Maxima.
13. You have a Laotian relative.
14. You are tired of Cambodian stereotypes, so you say that you are "Kampuchean" instead.
15. You want other Asians to stop meddling in your country.
16. You deny numbers 1 through 15.

You think you are the king of gamblers but lose all your money like the other ones.
You gamble with no strategy in the casino like a chick with no head
People think you're Paki or Indu
You wonder why all other Asian ethnicities hate you
You are really embarrassed when some white folks ask you serious questions about Buddhism because you don't know anything about it
You think you only have to wear expensive clothes to have class
You try to use every word of the ebonic slang but you look ridiculous
You really think that the more gold you wear the more chicks you get
You called white men foreigner in their own country
You call all white people Frenchmen
You go to the temple because you think you'll meet good girls there but most of the girls who go there are bad girls who want to prove there family and community they are clean good girls
You don't even know that angkor wat was not a Buddhist temple at first
You claim to be Buddhist but don't know anything about it
Your favorite past time is talking behind the back of people even your own family
You show no respect to the country your living in
You think Buddha is sort a god that can make you win money at the lottery or casino
If you are proud to be a Cambodian, then you have to know how to eat Prahok and Somlo Machua Kruong...And you have to know how to drink Turk Thnok Chua and eat Sach Ko Ank...
Very mixed reaction. Insulted, but also funny. Some parts are very true, others are ignorant. #1-15 I could laugh at some of them. As for most of the rest, it came off as you were insulting Cambodians.

You claim to be Buddhist but don't know anything about it
You don't even know that angkor wat was not a Buddhist temple at first
You are really embarrassed when some white folks ask you serious questions about Buddhism because you don't know anything about it

Most of the Khmer ple I know are not ignorant about their country or their culture. Although raised in the U.S. and being Americanized they will not insult their heritage.

You think Buddha is sort a god that can make you win money at the lottery or casino

You can believe what you may, but that doesn't mean its alright to belittle another's beliefs and religon. Buddhism isn't just called on by the belief of gamblers. Its practiced by millions and is one of the largest religons in the world.

You call all white people Frenchmen

If you mean the Khmer word "Barang" which literally translates to Frenchmen. Caucasion foreigners are called "Barang." But then you also have "Akeng" which also means western foreigner. The Thai language also uses "Farang" for foreigners. Saying that we "call all white people Frenchmen" came off, to me at least, that you think Cambodians are stupid and group white people into one class w/out considering different nationalities.

You hate it when people think Cambodians are the dirtiest Asians.
You wonder why all other Asian ethnicities hate you

I have to admit that many times I have felt the same way also. Maybe its b/c ignorant ple judge you by the whiteness of your skin. Even in these modern times, the whiter you are the better you will be treated. How many asian girls out there do you know are trying to get tanner? Not many, b/c they want to be lighter so that can be seen as more beautiful. Whats important is that you don't start believing those prejudice opinons. When people make statements belittling Cambodians it hurts, but what makes it worse is that you a Cambodian are saying it. If we want respect from others we should first respect ourselves.

As for my friends and myself, we can say that we're proud Cambodian Americans who are aware of their heirtage and culture. Some of us have converted to other religons but for the main part many still practice Buddhism. We speak English and Khmer b/c they are both a part of us. We're appreciate other cultures and our friends come from all over, many of them other Asians and not always Cambodian. And we also watch dramas: Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian.

I can't believe I took 5 min to read that.. Well if the girl that originally posted this is only forwarding some email, well its ok, but if she's being serious.. what's the point? I'm not 100% cambodian because I was born in Canada and half of my ancestors were chinese. We have all been americanized and the point is if this generation is lacking of culture, it's their own fault but to talk **** about your ancestors like that, well get a life. Have a nice day!

True cambodian are dark, the lighter one are actually half cambodian. It might not be the parents who is half but the ancestor etc. Cambodian aren't light by nature, they're decendants of an african. :D

haha i don't really do the forum thing, but i am half cambo and half chinese, but i ended up being raised more chinese than cambodian, so it's kind of the other way around for me, i can speak and understand chinese decently, but i can only understand khmer, and a lot less than i can chinese. since my grandparents are chinese and they were the ones that ended up living with my parents, the chinese influence was a lot more heavy, so we just ended up with that, and i guess the other side got shafted. but i consider myself ethnically composed of both, just more culturally one than the other.

I have been on D-addict for a while now. The second I saw this thread, I knew that I had to sign up and post in this thread. I am male. I am mixed cambodia/chinese. I was born in Thailand. and currently living in the US. I have been in the US pretty much all my life.

D-addict is awesome. I love watching foreign films. Currently watching ROCH 2006. I have seen every version so far.

I do not know where to get legend of the condor hero. When I watched it, it was on VHS. If i ever find it, I'll let you know. I don't know where to download chinese movies besides D-addict.

Wow. I didn't even know Cambodian people were on this server until I checked out this forum. I'm Cambodian and a quarter chinese. I can read better than I can write and I can understand better than I can speak. I know a bit a chinese but enough to get by. =] I'm 20 and attending U of Washington. I'm Vice Pres of KhSA (Khmer Student Asso) of UW. So if any you guys who live in Washington want to make a difference in other Cambodian kids lives let me know. Each year we do 2 main events one for high schoolers and one for khmer new years.

I've been d-addicts a lot lately cause AsianDvdClub.org is down. :( But when it gets back up I'll probably be over there more. I remember seeing ROCH but I don't know what version it was but it had Cambodian and Vietnamese subs. I might download it when the server gets back up.

I'm 100% Khmer from Lynn, MA, but I wish I was half Khmer and half something (prefer Japanese) like you guyz because it would be cool.:lol Be able to speak 2 language.

Over here we have plenty of Khmer Video Rental Store that have TVB and other Chinese Drama series dubbed in Khmer (also now they have Asian movies in DVD dubbed in Khmer) for a $1 each episode (1 episode have 2 part).

I got a question for all the Khmer peeps here. Do you guy listen to Khmer music?

Hey everybody, it's cool to know there are so many khmer people here on d-addicts. I'm from San Diego, CA. There are a couple of khmer rental stores in my neighborhood, but once I found out about this site I couldn't wait to watch chinese paladin or condor heroes before it got dubbed into khmer. D-addicts is great!!!

Hey nice to know there's a fellow Khmer in the forums that's from Lynn.

I don't really listen to Khmer music, but I know a few like Preab Sovath and Nop Bayarith. I'm sure you know they're pretty popular with the teenagers around here.

I dont listen to khmer music, and I dont speak it either O.O;;;

I listen to thai music, which I kind of prefer :P and I've been to Thailand too so I've been more exposed to stuff about Thailand than Cambodia (actually I dont think I know anything - maybe all I can really do is recognmize the difference in the language)

Wow! That is one joke that has gone terribly wrong. I think she posted that for us to have a laugh, not to take offense...but anyway, in answer to your question paupau, here are the answers. (I take no credit for the answers cuz I just copied and pasted what others wrote so you wouldn't have to search for the answer (I'm sooo nice! :lol ); kahmeng_srey gave the first answer and I_Nee gave the second answer.)

Prahok is a type of food that smells, but good. It is like a paste that you eat with veggies. Somlo Machua Kruong is a soup filled with a type of meat, it can be chicken, beef or pork. It also contains different types of leaves veggies. Sach Ko Anh is beef on stick. I don't know what Turk Thnok Chua is.

Turk Thnok Chua ' is an alcholic drink that is made from i think palm/coconut juice it has a sweet taste to it but my dad say its a very strong drink lolz...he say some white folks who doesnt noe its an alcholic drink get knock out after the first serve...hehehe..!!! 'CLAH CLOK' is that the game where u have a dealer who shake the dices that have like pic of chicken, crab, fish, etc and then you have peepz betting on it by placing money on the paper to the corresponding picture they want to bet on...its a real fun game actually ahehe but u can easily lose if the dealer cheats...!!!!!!

I don't like khmer music either, like Miaka FY said, it's all about "love" and the melody for every song seems to be the same - we need some change in our cambodian music industry!! :P They have to take risks and try something new (concerning the music) because I find that the only audience that will listen to khmer music (on the karaokes and stuff) are our parents and grandparents.

On a different note, I noticed that many of you are from the States. Are there any from Canada here?? Like say, Quebec?? (If you haven't already realized, I'm from Quebec. :P )

I haven't came by this forum for a long time lolz anyways I'm Cambodian and part chinese but I don't speak, write, read, or understand chinese. I blame my parents. Anyways I browse through what's been going on and I saw someone posted if there will be any cambodian dubbed drama series that is going to be uploaded on d-addicts. I don't want people to get excited but I ordered a khmer dubbed chinese movie series that I might rip and upload it here. Still waiting for my order.

Hey, I guess I’m pretty much the same Cambodian part Chinese and blame my parents too.. lolz for not knowing how to speak and write Chinese.. I did try to go and learn it but.. let’s just say it didn’t go to well. :roll . I should have started when I was young, oh well  .

Cambodian Dubbed drama you say. Is it a modern or ancient series? I’m sure many Combodian would be surprised to see it up here on D-addicts. I think I try to upload a khmer dubbed series once here on D-addicts before but there wasn’t much interest then. Hopefully it’s a new series. Looking forward to it. :w00t:

About khmer music, I don't listen to them because they are mostly translations from thai or chinese songs. :glare:
