Hey guys!

Im extremely new to the genre, so I have hardly seen anything yet.. The only thing ive watched is Gokusen and I loved it! However, im not into sappy romantic shows.. So i'm looking for comedic shows like gokusen or stuff like gaki no tsukai (which is really hard to find subbed :( ). Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Hi; I started watching J-Dramas about 1,5 years ago. But since 6-7 months or more, I didn't watched any.

The series I watched so far are about this:

Liar Game
GTO
Nodame Cantabile
Tiger&Dragon
Jikou Keisatsu Season 1-2
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e
Hana Yori Dango Season 1 (I couldn't bring mysefl to watch the second season)
Galileo
IWGP
First Kiss
Gokusen Season 1+2
Trick Season 1+2 (I got bored in the middle of the second season)

So are there any other interesting Mystery/Suspense/Comedy dramas or unique comedys?

Bara no nai Hanaya (romance, it's VERY good story-wise)
Hotaru no Hikari (as I mentioned in my previous posts, it's comedy)
Nodame Cantabile (comedy/drama, absolutely hilarious)
1 Pound no Fukuin (another great comedy, it's about boxing)

Diligently Me wrote:Hello, I just recently started watching Japanese dramas and I'm loving them. I am learning Japanese and it helps to watch a drama and catch a few words that I know. I tried it with anime, but most anime's have improper or ghetto Japanese.

This being said, I'm asking if some of the more experienced fans of JDramas could recommend a few good shows for me. The genres that I enjoy are romance, sci-fi (I haven't really found any sci-fi drama's), comedy and action.

So far here are the shows I've watched:

Innocent Love- One of my absolute favorites. I really enjoy watching Hirokita Maki act.

GTO- I haven't finished it, yet, but so far I love it. I never knew a television show could be so inspiring.

Maou- I watched the first episode and to be honest I found it a bit boring. It seems like a lot of people like it and so I will give it a few more episodes.

Last Friends- I finished this series and I wasn't very happy. I think it's because I never really connected with the characters. However, I did hate Sousuke throughout the entire series.

Bloody Monday- I have watched the first two episodes and I find this show boring as well. I will give a few more episodes, hopefully it will grow on me.

Kimi wa petto- Older woman younger man
Koi no chikara- Office relationship
Tbh I'm not a big fan of romance but i know i like these two thats not high school love
I would also suggest Kemonomichi
Warui yatsura
Kouri no sekai
Kouri no hana

But I think these are more mystery/thriller with the love for someone to be the driving force behind them

Try any Kitagawa Eriko drama (Long Vacation, A Million Falling Stars, Beautiful Life, etc.) She's famous for writing more mature love stories.

I recently started watching JDramas, currently watching Bloody Monday and I'm totally loving it. I would like to ask for other action/suspence shows. Something with terrorism or an elite force etc. Or some good medical shows.

Thanks!

Hi, I am quite new to the jdramas yet very interested. I would be glad for suggestions what to watch. Till now I have seen:
- Kekkon Dekinai Otoko - the best. Any of similar quality, not necessarily of same subject
- Kimi wa petto - same as above
- GTO - didn't suit me
- densha otoko - acting of the main character annoyed me but I kind of like the series.

Also, independently, from the series above I am looking for ones with standard Tokyo dialect, just to learn a bit of Japanese.

Long Vacation This and Kimi wa Petto are probably my favorite romantic comedies. They both have amazing ensembles.
Ashita no Kita Yoshio This is another great ensemble. It's a human drama/comedy... lots about friendship, human nature, family, love, hope, etc.... also has a bit of mystery in it.
Tiger and Dragon This is more family than romance focused, and it makes for a really interesting intro to the art of Rakugo. (This one also contains some yakuza speak from certain characters, but most characters speak normally from what I remember.)
Iryu Medical drama full of hospital corruption, a maverick surgeon, and godly surgeries... does have some very bloody surgery scenes though if you're easily bothered by those.
Maou Dark tale about the connection between a serial killer and the detective trying to stop him.
Nodame Cantabile Very slapstick comedy with many fun characters and beautiful classical music. The follow-up special was also great.

For learning a bit of Japanese you might want to check out something like the old Let's Learn Japanese Basic series produced back in the 80's and 90's. It's 52 episodes long and would give you exposure to standard Japanese grammar.

Erin ga Chosen! Nihongo Dekimasu is the lastest program from the Japan Foundation, and it is a bit more advanced from the little I've seen... probably has some more current words too... though it lacks English voice instruction to explain the concepts. You'd have to look around the web for that one.

Thanks a lot, started watching Long Vacation, pretty cool.
Sorry I haven't mentioned earlier but I am (approximately) JLPT 4, wow so **** not proud of myself.
Also started Shomuni - essence of Japanese behavior towards woman. Amazing stuff.

I Need A Drama To Watch About Romance In Guy Perspective

Post by BlazingSkies » Feb 26th, '09, 06:48

I don't like girl's perspective much...

Thank you... I appreciate it if anyone knows any.

I already watched:
Densha Otoko
Proposal Daisakusen

I hate:
1 Litre Of Tears

I prefer school-life/drama.

Hi, can some of you recommend me some new or old drama's? I'm looking for some funny, slice of life jdrama's. Please no girly jdrama's like Hanakimi, HanaYori etc. (with the pretty boys) as I see that there are a lot of girls here on DA.
Just drama's which are really relaxing to watch, about friends like Orange Days, or/and funny like Densha Otoko, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, At Home Dad or GTO. A bit of romance is good too. :)

Already watched these, because I think you will name them ;):
- Kizarazu Cat's Eyes
- My Boss My Hero
- Trick
- Hotaru no Hikari
- Proposal Daisakusen
- Gokusen
- Nodame Cantabile

Thnx!

There are lots of those. But are you looking for anything in particular? School backdrop, work back drop, some romance, mystery?

In any case, I would suggest Koi no Chikara. A fun, lighthearted show about a woman that has turned 30 and is wondering if she will ever find love. There's comedy, and some light romance. The actors are good too!

Don't mind the genres or themes... well, no history drama's of course. :P

I checked on Koi no Chikara. Thnx for the recommendation, but the story and actress Fukatsu Eri doesn't really interest me (saw her in CHANGE). Anything else?

Ive been looking for a new good drama to watch with romance and comedy with good/happy ending.

The thing is mainly the love triangle is 2 male 1 female. Im looking this time for 2 female 1 male type.

Does not just have to be triangle, but I wanna see some jealousy from the female lead. Be it in a comedic way and also in a dramatic way but not always at the same time.

sorry for being picky but it is not easy.

Hello fellow J-Drama addicts

So, I'm quite new to J-drama and I've only watched three dramas yet;
  • Papa to Musume no Nanokakan
    My Boss My Hero
    Nobuta wo Produce
and I liked the all three, but my favorite among those three is definately My Boss My Hero.

I'm looking for other dramas that is like My Boss My Hero. Mostly School life/Comedy (and maybe some romance too).

The part in Nobuta wo Produce that I didn't like was that it is so ... sad. I like comedy more (so I bet you can guess why I loved My Boss My Hero )
I also like happy endings.

Any suggestions?
:)

Oh thanks, it looks fun. I'm definitely gonna check it out.

Do you know any dramas that take place in school, like Nobuta wo Produce, that isn't sad, but fun?
Tearjerkers are not really my favorite since I love happy endings and so.

Looking for some recommendations
Looking for drama/romance, I guess - not a huge fan of "comedies", which I have found to be a bit too cheezy for my liking.

I liked:
Long Vacation
Love Generation
Akai ito
Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi
That's all I can think of at the moment...

Omiai kekkon was OK (I like Matsu Takako, but some of the humour, yearning after other people etc was a bit...)
Cheap love was OK (The girl was pretty cute, story was different/pretty good)
Unfair was OK (I like Shinohara Ryoko but just a *bit* over the top - same deal with Anego and Haken no hinkaku)

I can't stand dramas based on manga (well, the ones that are over the top, with ridiculous stories etc - ie Hana yori dango [although the girl ain't bad  ], Nodame cantabile)

Have seen quite a few dramas, but can't really remember/be bothered listing them all. Bit sick of Kimura Takuya, who seems to be in just about everything

So yeah, I guess I'm after a drama that takes itself seriously. A bit of humour/comedy is OK, as long as it's not stupid/silly. Cute girls are a bonus too :D Talking of which, is there a decent drama with Shinohara Ryoko where she isn't over the top?

Cheers

There are lots of dramas based on manga that do not depend on silliness or comedy.
e.g. Dr. Koto's Clinic, Oishii Kankei, Cat Street, Daisuki!, Hotman, Umizaru...
The list goes on and on... You might be surprised by how many quality dramas are based on manga.
glaspanic wrote:So yeah, I guess I'm after a drama that takes itself seriously. A bit of humour/comedy is OK, as long as it's not stupid/silly. Cute girls are a bonus too :D Talking of which, is there a decent drama with Shinohara Ryoko where she isn't over the top?
Shinohara Ryoko has made her neurotic characters a staple (and I actually like them a lot), but for a more "settled down" Shinohara, try Hikari to Tomo ni (which is another one of the more serious dramas based on a manga ). It's a family drama, not a comedy though.

Some romance/comedy dramas that you might find a little more realistic:
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
Muri na Renai
Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru
Orange Days

Hello... I am searching for a drama with high-school students. Searched genre is: comedy. :lol And because I know some may recommend ones that I have watched, these are the high-school comedies for which I don't need recommendations :P...

Nobuta wo Produce
HYD Season 1+2+Movie
Hana Kimi + SP
Gokusen x 3 seasons +SP
Stand Up!
GTO
Proposal Daisakusen + SP
Kizarazu's Cat Eyes
Dragon Zakura

Preferences:
*the drama would be based upon the life of the students, not the teachers >.>
*it would be quite new... Not 199_, but 2003 and later... :)

thx in advance ^^
:roll

I think that "My Boss My Hero" is just what you're looking for. I downloaded it recently, but Ep 3 is painfully slow to download (I'm up to 71% after 4 days), so I've only watched two episodes, but it's been pretty funny so far. Aired in 2006. From the wiki:
Sakaki Makio, also known as "Tornado" is a tough 27-year-old high school drop-out. By academic standards, he's pretty dumb. His father decides to force Makio to return to high school to receive his diploma and he asks an old friend who happens to be the principal of a nearby school to admit Makio. If Makio doesn't graduate, the position of boss will be given to his younger brother, Mikio.

Furthermore, he must pose as a 17-year-old during school hours and in the presence of any classmates or teachers outside of school. If his cover is blown, it would be the end of his high school career as well as his hopes to become boss. Things start out rough and tough as Makio's violent temper is tested. As the lessons and days go by he learns there is much more to school than just tests and studying.

please add to my plan to watchlist (I want REALLY good ones, not just above average, etc) and if you strongly about soething on my plan to wach list that you think I won't like it feel free to say that.

I'm pretty new to j-drama, only saw 2 that I really like.. I loved nobuta wo produce & LAst friends

first, don't give my any plot summary/genre info. I like going in as blind as possible so i'm not bored to death already knowing crap and actually enjoy the drama .

second, I don't care what genre it is as long as it's mad good

average-ish drama were:

seigi no mikata
(it was good but sorta boring and sorta nothing special )
bloody monday (I mean the crying parts were like melodramatic to me and soemtimes it was boring but sometimes it was exciting, I loved J's & Maya's actors and I don't really like takagi's actor)

maou - it was pretty boring, I mean I wanted to know what was going to happen next but that's about it... loved oono but not enough to love anything he's in.. and melodarma problem sometimes

14-sai - again, melodrama problem- like some if allright, some is just not. again I dislike the satoshi character that actor plays (is it the character or is it the characters I wonder but...) good parts/bad parts. I feel like I was only drawn b.c. of the title/basic premise. the ending was just... not much resolving. so that was disappointing.

erai sensei - fun drama special

furuhata special - sorta boring but it has mysteriuos so.
scrap teacher - yeah teh whole johnnyy's -kei thing so it's probably below average...
(my whole deal with that actoris the showa x heisei show but anyways)

I just have a problem with melodrama. I mean sad/crying is fine aslong as it's not melodramatic....

My plan to watch list:
hana yori dango / 2 花より男子
proposal daisakusen プロポーズ大作戦
gokusen 1 2 3 ごくせん (3 season right)
My Boss, My Hero マイ★ボス マイ★ヒーロー
GTO
zettai kareshi 絶対彼氏
1 Liter of Tears
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e
densha otoko 電車男
nodame canatbile のだめカンタービレ
joou no kyoushitsu 女王の教室
saito-san 斉藤さん

HYD/2 = GOOD Mao such a cutie <3

Gokusen = BORING and REPETITIVE, gets old really fast (though other people will tell you otherwise). I can't believe a movie is coming out... even after 3 seasons.

My Boss My Hero = GOOD! Sakuranantoka! And Aragaki Yui is sooo cute <3

Zettai Kareshi = Average, no love or hate towards it

1 Litre Of Tears = I read good things about it but Erika Sawajiri annoyed the crap out of me in Taiyou no Uta, your call

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e = As a guy, dealing with an ikemen drama is a little difficult but even I enjoyed it. Horikita Maki ftw!

Densha Otoko = Fun, but some scenes can get annoying...

Nodame Cantabile = VERY GOOD <- SO DAMN GOOD

Jyoou No Kyoushitsu = I never finished it since I accidentally erased it but I found it alright

Hi all  I'm searching for some good dramas from the early 90's or late 80's, preferably the latter. I don't mind the genre it can be comedy, romance, school life etc.... I have had a hard time finding jdramas from the late 80's with eng subs, it feels almost impossible... please help. I have seen two dramas from the early 90's already, (see below the ones in bold) and I really liked them.

I also made my all time fav list of jdramas that I have watched so far. Maybe this list can be useful for someone looking for good jdramas too.

1. Karei Naru Ichizoku (The Grand Family) (2007)
2. Densha Otoko (fav romance-comedy drama) (2005)
3. G.T.O. (fav school life drama) (1998)
4. Love Generation (fav relationship drama) (1997)
5. Long Vacation (1996)
6. 101st proposal (1991)
7. Kiken na Aneki (fav comedy) (2005)
8. Change (2008)
9. Hero (fav detective/mystery drama) (2001)
10. Engine (fav sports drama) (2005)
11. Tokyo Love Story (1990)
12. Nodame Cantabile (including special) (2006)
13. Hana yori dango 2 (2007)
14. Gokusen (2002)
15. Hitotsu (1993)
16. Kimi wa petto (2003)
17. Attention please (2006)
18. Edison no haha (2008)
19. Yama Onna Kabe Onna (2007)
20. You're under arrest (2002)

That's a lot of jdrama (and a lot of harddrive space), I sure am a "d-addict" hehe :alcoholic: I hope someone has some tips for those late 80's jdramas for me. :-)

Hello... I'm writing my thesis on the role of men at home, and am doing a cross-cultural media analysis kinda thing. Any recommendations on a drama where there are a fair amount of scenes taking place in the home? My only specification is that the male character lives with a partner and is in his mid-20s-early 50s. 'At Home Dad' is a pretty sure-fire choice, and I appreciate any other titles that anyone might be able to come up with!

Thanks!

Hmm, I'm not quite sure they're what you're looking for, but you can check out Oyaji, Seigi no Mikata, and Tiger & Dragon. They all have a lot of family based scenes in the home.

Sadly, I know a lot more titles that are "single or recently widowed guy tries to raise kids on his own". lol.

Just drama's which are really relaxing to watch, about friends like Orange Days, or/and funny like Densha Otoko, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, At Home Dad or GTO. A bit of romance is good too. :)

Already watched these, because I think you will name them ;):
- Kizarazu Cat's Eyes
- My Boss My Hero
- Trick
- Hotaru no Hikari
- Proposal Daisakusen
- Gokusen
- Nodame Cantabile

Thnx!

Mukodono, maybe. It's really comedic though so I'm not exactly how "realistic" you're looking for. Also Scandal. Although its main focus is mystery, it also shows different women and their families/households/husbands.

I'll add Giragira to the list. Sasaki Kuranosuke's character (Kohei) splits his time between home and work, but I think his role in the family is quite clear in this drama. You can also check out Jinbo Satoshi's character in Around 40. Jyoou no Kyoushitsu also has a subplot about gender/parental roles.

Good luck to you!

Hey!

I'm in need of some suggestions for new shows to watch. I am a fan of comedy and romance mostly. I've not watched many jdramas, only Nodame and currently Love Shuffle. I have Densha Otoko downloaded to watch and Waterboys season 1 too.

My favourite actor is Hiroshi Tamaki, so anything that has him in a sizeable role would be awesome.

Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that there has to be subtitles as I am not fluent in Japanese.

For romance/comedy, I recommend:

1. Hana Yori Dango
2. Nobuta wa Produce
3. Hotaru no Hikari
4. Hanakimi Live Action
5. Yamada Tarou Monogatari

For boy teenager:

Stand Up
IWGP

Kind of unsure by what you mean of boy teenager, like does it have to be about boys in teenage years and what genre exactly? Like comedy, mystery or sad?

For something like Akai Ito:

1. Beautiful Life
2. 1 Litre of Tears
3. Sekai no Chuushin De
4. Byakuyakou
5. Ima Ai ni Yukimasu
6. Summer Snow
7. Taiyou no Uta

Anywho check out my site for more recommendations.

Thanks for recommendation
Jdrama has to be about boys in teenage years and it has to be comedy or mystery and not sad

They are not really "partners" (though I'm not going to spoil it by saying what happens), but hotaru no hikari might be worth checking out. It's a good drama if nothing else. Also, Absolute Boyfriend (or Zettai Kareshi) would be one to note. And again, if nothing else, it's a good drama.

I haven't watched too many dramas with Hiroshi Tamaki in them, however here's a list of dramas that I would definitely recommend:

Japanese Dramas
1. Hanazakari no Kimitachi e - very funny, with romance, about an "American" girl in high school who hides her gender and transfers to a Japanese all-boys high school to help her idol, a high jumping star, return to the field after an accident
2. My Boss My Hero - a hilarious comedy about a really stupid yakuza heir who is forced to go back to high school at 27 by his father because he is so stupid.
3.Hotaru no Hikari - cute and funny drama about a messy beer drinking, sleep under newspapers on the porch girl who suddenly finds herself living with her boss...a huge shock to her after trying to keep her messiness/laziness a secret from her co-workers.
4. Zettai Kareshi (absolute boyfriend) - about a young woman who aspires to be a pastry chef then finds herself suddenly with a prototype "perfect boyfriend" robot that she has to keep a secret from the rest of the world which proves harder than it really should be because of the robots crazy antics that she has to explain. Very funny, very sad, just all around good.
5. Akihabara@DEEP - really weird and a total nerd drama, which not a lot of people like, but it's really freaking funny and good...about 5 otaku's who live in Akihabara who from a "troubleshooter" kind of business where they are hired to help the people of Akihabara solve their problems and in the process they may or may not solve their own issues in doing so.
6. Bara no nai Hanaya - beautiful story about a single dad and his daughter who run a flower shop in a small town that doesn't sell roses. He helps a blind woman one morning which leads to a series of crazy events (not really a comedy, actually, but still wonderful)
7. Gokusen 1,2, and 3 - awesome pass-the-time dramas about a teacher who is the 4th generation heir to a prominent yakuza family who has to keep her family a secret from the school because she might be fired because of it. She always manages to be hired to teach the "failure class" 3-D, where all the kids are trouble makers ETC. so she has to help them solve their problems as well as make sure they graduate without being expelled first XD...not really romance dramas, but very comedic.
8. Hana Yori Dango 1 and 2 - great romantic comedies, totally unrealistic, about the only poor girl going to a really rich high school and her sudden involvement with a group of boys known as the "Flower 4" who terrorize and rule the school with an iron fist. This is a drama that I actually could not physically pull myself away from the computer to stop watching, so make sure you have a lot of time on your hands before starting it because it's that good.
9. Lunch Queen - A good drama about a woman who loves omurice who is pulled into the family life of a small family owned restaurant when the oldest brother makes a deal with her that she should announce herself as his fiancee, then abandons her there.
10. Himitsu no Hanazono - A very cute drama about a woman who worked for a fashion magazine until it went under and was transferred to a manga publisher instead. She has to edit the work of a very successful Ms. Hanazono, who turns out to be 4 crazy brothers , not a woman like everyone thinks but she has to keep that fact a secret from the world. etc. romantic comedy for cereal.
11. Yamada Taro Monogatari - a silly romantic comedy about an extremely poor, sweet, naive boy who goes to a prestigious high school and everyone thinks he's really freaking rich (but he doesn't know they think this, they just think it) and a girl in his class who accidentally finds out his "secret" after her mom takes him on as her pupil for getting great deals on groceries. O.o; sounds ridiculous but its funny.

Taiwanese Drama
1. Rolling Love (Go! Fried Rice) - (note:I was initially skeptical about watching Taiwanese dramas (or any dramas besides Japanese dramas) but found my options for new Jdramas were running low so I gave this one a shot and it turned out to be one of my favourite dramas of all time) about a small town fry cook who can only cook egg fried rice and a internationally famous chef who have one thing in common - they are both in love with a blind girl named Xiao Shu. I could go on an on about this drama but I don't want to give anything away. You should just watch it for yourself XD

those are my recommendations. Hope you enjoy some of them![/i]

For some good dramas with Hiroshi Tamaki also try Shikaotoko Awoniyoshi and Last Christmas. :D

Totally check out Long Vacation! It's great.

Kimi wa Petto is funny and has a non-conventional take on romance.

Bara no nai Hanaya was very good, and so was Hotaru no Hikari. Yasuko to Kenji was good silly fun for a comedy.

I'm wondering what other dramas from the most recent season I might enjoy.

I've already watched Arifureta Kiseki and Love Shuffle, I enjoyed both.

Some others I've enjoyed:
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
Life
Uramiya Honpo
Proposal Daisakusen
Densha Otoko
Last Friends
Zettai Kareshi
Innocent Love

So...recommend away!
