I would have to say "you're under arrest". Then again that is the only "police" drama I have seen yet. :P But still it was fun, also, Hara Sachie, and Itoh Misak = :lol

Number 1 without a doubt Odoru Daisousasen (aka Bayside Shakedown).
The show, the specials, the 2 movies, and 2 spin off movies.

The second would be You're Under arrest live action, mainly because I was a fan of the anime.

It's currently airing in Hawaii via KIKU-TV, with English subtitles. I don't think it's available anywhere in digital form.

My favorite police drama is Detective Investigation Files part 1, 2 and 3. It's a HK drama actually.

Also, shouldn't this thread be moved to the General Discussion section since the original poster stated that those dramas can be from any country and not just Japan?

あぶない刑事 (Abunai Deka) / Dangerous Police
沙粧妙子の最後の事件 (Sashou Taeko no Saigo no Jiken) / Sashou Taeko's Last Case
The two are so different, it's hard to decide on just one.

It's interesting that when they released Sashou on VHS (I rented some eps at the video store), they removed Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" from it. This probably reflects really badly on me, but I missed hearing that song while watching the drama. It wasn't just that the song was played so many times in each episode and so I was used to it, but that song kind of set the mood for the drama.
"Last night I dreamt of San Pedro, Just like I'd never gone, I knew the song..." Arrgh. Must get song out of mind...

This was a drama? I didn't realize that! I recorded the TOEI movie with English subs to DVD a few months ago. It's one of my favorite Japanese movies from the 1980's. I would do almost anything to get ahold of the drama series.

Favourite police drama (since it's not limited to just jdramas):

1. Police Cadet I & II (both starring Tony Leung back in the 80s, PC II also starred Chow Yun Fat and Simon Yam - this series had some of the best actors)
2. Investigator Mariko All Seasons
3. Odoru Daisousasen
4. Untraceable Evidence
5. Detective Investigation Files IV

Jikou keisatsu.

I suppose if I had to pick a real police drama, tho, it would probably be Gonzo. :-)

HERO the drama series

Some of the episodes of MR.BRAIN

Would you call THE CHASER a detective story?? No.. maybe that was more a specific crime deduction and maybe horror story ??But good anyway.

H.I.T drama with Ha Jeon Woo. (also starred in The Chaser)

As much as I love Hero, I consider it to be a prosecuter drama rather than a police drama, so it's a toss up between Galileo and Odoru Daisosasen for me... I really love them both...

I guess it depends on the definition of "police drama". I would not say Mr. Brain or Hero would be considered in that category ( although Hero is probably my favorite show )

But for actual police dramas, Odoru Daisousasen is very good and so is Furuhata Ninzaburo ( though this is arguably a detective / mystery, not a police drama ).

I would say Gonzo: Densetsu no Keiji is the best in recent years.

Furuhata Ninzaburo 4 Seasons, specials and so many famous guest-murderers. Such an awesome series. Pity it had to end because Furuhata's actor is getting so old, I suppose?

Hm apart from Odoru (waiting excitedly for movie no3)...and Gonzo.

I wonder why nobody mentioned Rinjo? Still sad there's no subs for the second season. I really liked Uchino's way of solving the crimes.

And there is Control right now.. but it's a little naive even if idea was very promising, I love profiling/behavior interpreting focusing kind of dramas.

Tokyo Dogs was my favoriiiite! Love the silly chemistry between the two (and love Shun's character with his American edge.... it gave a different take in detective/cop shows) but I think Shinzanmono was genius though. (Well Higashino Keigo is remarkable)

I've only seen two police dramas so far, Fugoh Keiji and Remote. Fugoh Keiji was terrible, from top to bottom. It was so bad that it seemed like the directors were literally trying to make a bad show. Remote, on the other hand, was really cool. I thought it was hilarious and had many touching cases. I also loved the team-up of Fukada Kyoko and Dohmoto Koichi in that series. Kyoko was funny and adorable, and Koichi had a nice backstory. Speaking of Koichi, has anyone seen Rookie? Another police drama with Koichi that also stars Uchiyama Rina. I'm curious about watching that one.

SP - Special Police.. but than I'm Okada biased :p Although he look too short to be an SP, but still all the stunts that he pull was amazing.

I enjoyed Tokyo Dogs too, especially the comical chemistry between Shun and Mizushima. And BOSS because in the beginning, but it get's a bit repetitive toward the end. Oh surprisingly I enjoy Zettai Reido, since Aya Ueto seems to improve her acting, I wasn't expecting much at the beginning.

Spec 2 also good if you want a mix of x-men and police story.

Unfair is the best police story for me from the brilliant storyline, mystery and acting

Tokyo Dogs is also my favorite because it really funny and great chemistry between shun and Hiro
Remote with Koichi is pretty good as well...
the most recent one i watch is Deka Wanko which is really cute and funny but not the serious kind of police drama :roll
Hancho is pretty good as well and it going to enter 4 season now :thumleft:
Triangle and BOSS is also good :thumright:

I love a mix of serious and comedy...

Gonzo ~ Densetsu no Keiji
Aibou
Odoru Daisosasen
Jikou Keisatsu
Galileo
Shinzanmono
Remote
Tokyo DOGS
Unubore Deka
Koshonin
What I've seen from Hancho was enjoyable, but I've not seen more than a few episodes so far. Cool news that it's made it to season 4.

Of the ones I've seen...

1. Remote- Best mix of seriousness and comedy that I've seen in a jdrama so far.
2. LADY~ Saigo no Hanzai- Quite underrated. I felt there was a lot of depth in the cases.
3. Galileo- Was just average to me. Fukuyama Masaharu was great, and I loved the way he solved the cases. However, Shibasaki Kou wasn't suited for her role, and the cases were just kind of generic.
4. Rookie- Starred Domoto Koichi, Uchiyama Rina, and Kuroki Hitomi. However, other than the acting, there's nothing imaginative about this series. Just an ordinary cop drama with no real compelling story.
5. Fugoh Keiji- Just awful.

Two of my favourites are comedies:

Deka Wanko- Rookie detective Ichiko "Wanko" Hanamori (Mikako Tabe) wears Gothic Lolita style of clothes, while solving cases with her acute dog like sense of smell! It's very meta (references to the actors outside life /previous roles)

Unubore Keiji - A 30-year-old single detective (Nagase Tomoya), who is under the illusion that he is popular with females is called "Unubore" by friends. He is an ultra romantic and susceptible to conceitedness. He has such a strong desire to marry to the extent that he has bought an apartment for his newlywed life. He falls in love with female criminals at first sight each time.
