Since I haven't visited this thread for over two years now, here's the list that I put together (on the first page of this thread):

Two years later, here's my new list:

1. Masami Nagasawa (I have a weakness for her smile and just seeing her in a wedding dress make me . Not a great actress, but her screen presence is something that I can't get out of my head)
2. Tomoko Yamaguchi (Too bad she hasn't acted in a drama since 2004 (she went into semi-retirement in 1996 and briefly returned in 2004), but still a great actress that shouldn't be forgotten)
3. Ryoko Shinohara (I think she gets better with every lead role she gets lately)
4. Kou Shibasaki (Same reason as Ryoko Shinohara)
5. Suzuki Honami (I can never forget her performance in Tokyo Love Story and it's too bad she hasn't acted since 1998. However, a great actress that shouldn't be forgotten)

Rina Uchiyama and Misaki Itoh have been left off my list because I'm unimpressed with the lead roles that they have been given lately, especially for Misaki Itoh.

There are other actresses that would make it to my list, but since I can only have five of them, I'll leave it at that for the time being.

1. Shibasaki Kou - Still one of my favorite actress of all time, excellent film/dorama selection skills (ALL boxoffice or critically positive film/series?!), poor acting.
2. Kanno Miho - Excellent both visually and acting, not appearing in enough movies.
3. Wakui Emi - Has fallen to supporting actress status, but still excellent acting.
4. Nagasawa Masami - Soooo cute, so inconsistent/horrible acting.
5. Narumi Riko/Aoi Yuu- Most promising next-gen actresses

haha... very hard for me to named 5... cos I am only more familiar with 3.... (i only started following up on J dramas recently...)

anyway, after watching some dramas, I liked the following actresses:

Kou Shibasaki --- I like her big eyes and her cool character. Like her after watching Orange Days. love her so much in Galileo and Good Luck.

Ayase Hakura --- Reminded me so much of the Taiwaness sisters Big S and Small S. I liked her after watching Hotaru no Hikari.

Matsu Takako --- Like her after watching really old show... ah... back in the 1990s... can't remembered the Japanese title... she was in the season 2 of the drama...

I've been watching j-dramas for about 2 and a half years now so i've watched maybe around 30 dramas.

I probably liked these actresses simply because they were all in the earlier stuff i watched, HYD, GTO, Nobuta etc and i really enjoyed watching those series. But now my list has changed to include for the actresses for whom i will watch something no matter how crap it is, simply because their presence is enough to pull the drama through for me.

1) Takeuchi Yuko: She's not the best or the prettiest actress out there but she is definitely the one with the most incredible smile. Her smile is so genuine it truly brightens up my day when i watch her act. Most of her projects are entertaining and she has had some of the best co stars ever Kimura Takuya, Nakai Masahiro, Abe Hiroshi, Tsumabaki Satoshi and now Shingo Katori. What more could you ask for?

2) Matsushima Nanako: I think she is one of the prettiest actresses out there and i enjoy her works a lot. She's acted as a wide range of characters she's very enjoyable to watch.She also has great co stars as well especially in GTO with her husband

3) Inoue Mao: She grows with every role she plays and she just keeps getting better and better as an actress. I find myself waiting excitedly for her next project just so i can see how much she's grown. i've watched her in HYD, Kids war (where she was just a 12 year old kid), First kiss, Hanaikusai, Anmitsuhime, Grave of the firefiles. She's very cute and very charismatic as well.

I like other actresses like Shibasaki Kou, Fukatsu Eri, Yamaguchi Tomoko, Matsu Takako. Hirosue Ryoko because they are great actresses (not really Kou but the others yes) but if the show was boring then i would stop watching it.

I miss Matsushima Nanako!! I wish she would take more roles or more people would use her as a lead actress (I basically watched Hana Yori Dango just so I could see her )

I think it's obvious from my list that I admire older women, since all of the actresses listed are 30+ with the exception of Takeuchi Yuko (but she's getting close). I think older actresses are so much more charismatic than the younger ones and their acting seems much more complex to me. I would also add Itoh Misaki except I admire her more as a model than as an actress (she's not that good at acting IMO).

Basically, I've started watching j-dramas this year, so my list hasn't really changed a lot, maybe just some little ups and downs by watching more dramas, this one is the current (and quite stable one ). It's a top 7 by the way, 'cause 5-7 can sort of change places a lot of times. I love japanese actresses, they can express emotions a lot clearer and make it feel really pure. They can play a variety of roles and really make me enjoy the series every time.

If I compare my current preferences with the ones I had, say, 10 years ago, they have indee changed! Furthermore, while back then my top5 were pretty easy to name - since I hadn't watched so many doramas and therefore it was way easier to pick - nowadays I find it difficult to name only 5 (and I also have to add that my top5 now change more frequently, depending on the last doramas I've watched - note that I don't only watch new ones; actually, I like mixing them, so I may watch one from the 90s, then a recent one, then one from 10 years ago, etc....and with every one I watch I may "discover" even an older actress I still hadn't noticed before).

Anyway, 10 years ago my top5 would've been something like this:

1) Fukatsu Eri
2) Matsushima Nanako
3) Takeuchi Yuko
4) Ishihara Satomi
5) Shinohara Ryoko

Right now, I'd go with:
