Just watched the first episode and I have to say:
Poor. Kinda boring.
This freakin' marriage thing is just going on my nerves. Always the same. Rich, handsome, popular guy marrying a goofy girl.
Also that girl with the "pink sticks" is just so annoying after a minute you hear her talk.
The leading actor has no charisma...acting skills..I dunno...didn't have the chance to show them yet.
The only thing that's slightly positive is the main actress. She's cute, but I somehow have the feeling, that she's got this "annoying thing", that many Korean actresses have: They're just annoying after some time due to their over-acting.
I hope it'll get better... I'm seriously wondering why anybody would say that they liked the first Episode, let alone saying it was great. I could still understand first-timers in case of kdramas, but not people who have watched dramas like "MNISKSS" or "Full House". 'Cause after the first episode, you will already know the whole plot...I guarantee that.

After watching the first episode here is what I think.
1. I'm relieved that the main actress is just right for the role, although she needs to be more natural with her character. I'm still hoping that she will improve with the episodes to come.
2. I'm disappointed with the guy who plays Shin. Man.. I was really hoping that it could be a superhot guy like Yonho from DBSK. I've seen the guy act with Banjun drama episodes (referring to the episodes that he rides the motorcycle and he is the school bully). But It still too early to judge, he might turned out like (rain/bi from fullhouse) at first I thought he wasnt even good looking but the more I see him the more enthralled I get. So who knows.
3. The guy who plays Yul is cute, and the girl who is the girlfriend is really dull looking.
4. Sidecharacters are okay and they dont annoy me that much.
5. Music is nice, except we need more to build the ambience of each scene.
6. The preview for the next episode is perfect paired with an amazing background music, that fits each scene and I cant wait to watch it.

I juz finished both episodes:
- The casts can be so much better - like the shin guy , they need a better actor that has more charisma and presence on screen, this guy seems a bit weak for a prince...(I soooooo think that it should be hyun bin...omg if it were, this would be a MASSIVE hit)
- The girl, although didnt look as cute at first i think she matches the role...oh and despite what ppol say bout the other girl as boring, I think shez perfect for the role...
- The other blonde haired guy (forgive me for referring them as guy/girl, i suck in rememberin nameS) was better than the shin guy, oh i remember his name now, Yul...yeah, hez better on screen and actually what is driving me watch this drama is juz seeing his relationship grow wit the main girl...it'll b cute...
- One really positive thing that I like bout it so far is the comical references, like when the main girl was talkin to the queen in like informal language then all the comics stuff pops up ...thats classic but i think its one factor that will distinguish the drama from other comedy/romance kdrama...

This may not be related to the drama, but I have question about the manhwa, I know that chap 1 of vol 8 is available on www.manganut.com but does anyone know how long the manga is, and the whole series has been released in Korea or it's still on-going?
Yep and the guy play shin did put me off a little bit because when I was reading the manhwa I imagined that Shin would be a superhot guy that every girl goes crazy about but he didn't quite make that impression (or may be I should go watch it again to justify my judgement ), and may be I'm a little bit obsessed with the manhwa but his acting also does not portrait the traits of Shin's characters that well, Shin in the manhwa is different, he acts colder and may seem to be quite a meanie sometimes ( but I still like him ). I hope at the story progresses, the acting will be better. However, I'm happy with the first 2 episodes and hope for more to come!!

it's still ongoing, since the latest volume is volume 11, and i think there would still be one more volume left, all depending on park so hee =) it's recently been licensed, so you can buy the english books soon enough =) hope that helped =Dusyagitntn wrote:This may not be related to the drama, but I have question about the manhwa, I know that chap 1 of vol 8 is available on www.manganut.com but does anyone know how long the manga is, and the whole series has been released in Korea or it's still on-going?
LOL, you're voicing my very thoughts on ep1-2!!! Shin on screen is so boring... maybe he'll get better later on in the series? I sure hope so... talking about no charisma at all so far. And his clothes... couldn't they have dressed him better? what's up with pink tie and once a pink sweater? *shudders* In the manga he dresses in cool normal guy clothes when there's no ceremony and stuff to attend to and dress up for.flcia wrote:I juz finished both episodes:

About the main girl, I didn't like her at first glance either but after I saw her acting I think she actually fits the role ^^ She's definitely growing on me.
Yul is cuuute~~ I can't wait to see more of him and yeah the comical stuff are fun ^^
Yul is definately a cutie. I think I'm going to have to watch the drama for him, if not anything else.
I must say, god, the Prince sucks at acting, what we can see. He didn't get much of a chance to show more of his acting, but what there was - if you can't pull off little things like this, how is he going to be good? And he's really not cute or dashing at all. Superficial, yes, but if he has the girls swooning and stalking him everywhere he goes, he better be believably hot and cute and this guy just isn't it.
The first 2 episodes were pretty boring actually. I think they could have cut some stuff out, but I guess we'll see how it goes. There were some cute little moments, but not enough to save my short attention span.
For now I'll stick with My Girl and Seo Dong Yo.

Thank you so much , that helped a lot. I can't wai 'til the english books are available ( should be starting saving money now ). I'm totally in love with this manhwa and hoping that the drama will turn out as good as the original series ( or even better? )Tellie wrote:it's still ongoing, since the latest volume is volume 11, and i think there would still be one more volume left, all depending on park so hee =) it's recently been licensed, so you can buy the english books soon enough =) hope that helped =Dusyagitntn wrote:This may not be related to the drama, but I have question about the manhwa, I know that chap 1 of vol 8 is available on www.manganut.com but does anyone know how long the manga is, and the whole series has been released in Korea or it's still on-going?

does anyone have the ringtone that CG's mom has on her handphone in episode 1. I can't get AnyCall handphones in Singapore but we can get Samsung branded phones here. Does anyone know the title of that ringtone? If anyone knows can they post the title up here. Maybe I can ask a friend to bluetooth the ringtone over. I own a K750 by sony ericsson btw. Better yet if anyone can make a midi out of that ringtone its even better.
I think i have heard the same ringtone on Hyun Bin's phone too in My lovely Sam Soon/My name is Kim Sam Soon.

GOONG/PALACE
hello! I'm new here! I signed up because I'm very much interested in Korean Dramas.
Lately, I've been excited because GOONG/Palace is finally being aired on Korean TV. Unfortunately, I'm unable to watch this series so I'm waiting for yesasia's dvd release. So far, I've read your reviews for GOONG and all of you seems to be very disappointed with the outcome of the drama.
For me, although I haven't watched the series, I think that the actors/actresses portraying the characters of GOONG were chosen not only for their looks but also for their personality. And I'm sure that the casting director made no mistake at all. I just hope that none of you will bash them a lot because they have been chosen out of all the famous stars that auditioned for the part. So please give them a chance.
Also, as I read your reviews, I immediately realized that the personalities of the actors/actresses matched the personalities of the characters in the manwha.
SHIN being passive, quiet, stubborn & a little naughty <when with Chae Gyung>. YUL being confident, charming, sweet, nice, down-to-earth & mysterious. CHAE GYUNG being sassy, bubbly, nice, emotional & has a big heart. HYO RIN being attractive, quiet, reserved & distant.
Actually, I'm already reading Vol. 8 of GOONG and I'm very much pleased with Shin's character development.
Well, I hope that the story turns out to be better than expected and I hope that this series will be one of the best feel good K-drama of all time. Also, I hope everyone will support GOONG!

^AHAHAHAHA OMG exactly my sentiments! I thought I was weird for thinking it at first - yanno - wanting Yul and the girl to be together in the drama and Shin and the girl to be together in the manhwa, but I'm glad to see that other people share the same thoughts!inutikidude wrote:-sweat drop- Even tho im a huge fan of the manga, i have to agree . To tell you the truth, I'm not quite sure why I feel this way, but I do agree with all the comments that have noted the somewhat lack of charisma that Shin's actor has on screen. Yul's actor, on the other hand, has the presence that is needed for his character - plus, I think he's rather good-looking compared to Shin... ^^;;;;; I don't know.
BUT - the series seems pretty interesting as of now - I will continue to watch this series to see how it plays out - maybe Shin can "up" his charisma....
There are...20 episodes in this series...I wonder how it'll develop. =D

I was anticipating this drama coz I really like the manwha, the chemistry between ChaeGyong and Shin is so strong and their relashionship is so funny!
But I just saw the first 2 eps of the drama and I have to say I'm kind of disappointed. There isn't chemistry between the two lead actors and Shin seems to have just one facial expression. And ChaeGyong seems really scared of him and the ambiance is though really different from the manwha. Last thing: it's so slow especially when the queen is talking, it's taking her ages just to say one sentence.
Anyway, I hope that everything will get better in the upcoming eps, coz I just can't believe such a great manwha won't make a great drama!

I'm also disappointed with this drama so far (I've watched to ep 4). I don't like the casting. The only characters that grab my interest is the second male lead and the girl with the glasses. Also, I've not read the manhwa, but are the characters supposed to be so annoying? No offense to the fans, but all of the characters have been extremely annoying while Shin has been elusive. Hopefully it picks up.

I've only seen two episodes, and I must agree with most people--It could have been better. It's not boring, it's just too dry! And the cast are to be blamed for that.
1) Chae-gyeong - She's trying too hard to act all cute and funny, and even her get-up mirrors that personality but I just can't find any spontaneity with her acting. She can't pull off the scenes that made my tummy hurt from laughing when I read the manhwa. On second thought, she's more of a crybaby...Park did say that she's not like Tsukushi of HYD's.
2) Shin - I told u it's dry...I dont think I have to explain how Shin contributes to that, do I? Fine, I'm still giving him a chance because the original plot is still buried somewhere out there...but the sudden turnaround of giving Shin serious romantic emotions for Hyo-rin spoiled my expectations.
3) Yul - He smiles too much. Ick. (Now, I understand when people from the HYD thread commented how "unconventional" Shun's portrayal of Rui was.) But then, I think I'm going to empathize a bit to the Yul in the drama as opposed to the Yul of the manhwa, where he was more like a spectator-slash-antagonist.
I picked on it and mumbled a lot while watching ep01--where's that scene? that's not the way it was!! Where is CG's guy friend? aw, it's not as funny as I was expecting, blah blah blah--but at ep02, I got used to the flow and accepted the way it is. It's just that when I saw all the pictures and the ads for the promotion, I thought how pretty and bubblegum-y it looks like. Mind you, the manhwa is not a masterpiece and regardless how the writer once hinted that "this is not your typical shoujo manhwa," it greatly suffers the symptoms of your typical kdrama or much closer to a historical romance paperback novel.
-minor manhwa spoiler-
A cheap way to keep the readers' attention, but I'm weak and I fell for it.
Maybe the excitement and anticipation for the drama jinxed it eh? Haha...I was really looking forward to this drama, but 4 episodes has just been aired and I havent seen the latter two, who knows what'll happen? I'm still giving it a chance. *prays*
So I guess, we won't see Prince William guest in this show? I felt sorry for the prince...Soo Hee Park made fun of him. I'm hoping they won't include that homosexual old man too. Gosh, he annoyed me so much! The writer's sense of humor is kinda weird sometimes.
Did anybody notice the pictures they flash on each episode with the seja and CG? That was cool! I was gonna take screencaps so I could compare them to the original drawings from the manhwa but I got lazy. That's one thing I like and the OST is nice too.

I'm now quite satisfied to 2 girls acting but 2 guys...uh they need to improve abit
in compare with manhwa, I think I like drama story better bcoz it's more rational
Is there subtitles for this? Anyone working on the subtitles?
I thought BoA was rumored to star in this show? It would have been a good career move for BoA. She should have been on this show. Her management blew it.
Personally, I don't think the cast is all bad. I really like the lead actress, she's really cute.
Male lead could have been better.
With "Sweet Spy," doing well, and This series as well as the new "Wolf" series coming up, it seems like MBC is making a comeback after a slump.

the guy who act Shin is too stiff already.. no feeling..
and the Mother Queen is sooo slowwww.. the way she talk haha.. but she's quite cute too actually,,
overall this drama is ok.. i will continue to watch it

I haven't watch epi. 3 & 4 yet, but so far I think this serie is pretty okay. I think Yul is very cute and he's starting to grow on me. I so wish Yul is the main male lead, plus I think him and the lead actress match better. I do agree, Shin does act a bit stiff sometimes. I also like the ending theme song a lot. Btw, jaycee05, the avatar you have, which Japanese series is that from? He's kinda cute.

me too, I just finished ep 4 and the short prince (sorry, bad at names) is the only reason for me to watch this serie. The girl lead is trying too hard to be funny and is therefore not funny. The male lead (tall prince) was bad choice for this drama, I think. No attraction at all.CraZyaH wrote:just finished watching episode 4,ok the drama isn't the best, but it's not THAT bad!
and OMG I think I'm falling for YUL! I don't want him to turn evil later
Another reason to watch this drama: are the sceneries, mansions, palaces and the Hanboks and props. Must be a big budget drama this one.
I wished that the lead actress would go with the short prince (Yul?). They are a better match, but looks like he is playing boy2, so he will never get together with girl1

This seems like an odd request...but after finding out that the guy who plays Yul (Kim Jung Hoon or something?) is in the group UN, I've been curious about UN. He has a nice voice and I was wondering if someone had a song or a MV or something that they wouldn't mind sharing? ^^;;; Eheh. Sorry

Actually, I thought CG was really cute being childish. I didn't feel like she was overacting. Didn't annoy me at all. Seemed so natural to me, I wasn't even aware that she was trying to be funny. If anything, she seemed to be going for the cute bit more. Shin is supposed to be a cold jerk like that, no point in making him more than what he is. We're not suppose to find him likable. When I first read the manhwa, I was rooting for Yul cuz Shin was just blah... the point is to make him warm up to CG and slowly change in the course of the story.
Yul's so cute in the drama . How can he smile too much ? He's the friendly one. He's not aloof like Rui in HYD, so why would he act 'cool' at all? KJH has such an adorable babyface, he so does not look like a playboy.
Anyway, an adaptation is bound to be crushed by some. Can't please everyone. I'm glad it pleases me though

I am not comparing Rui and Yul. I was comparing the comments made of HYD manga fans of how Rui's frequent smiles in the drama are non-existent in the manga. Likewise I was taken aback when I saw how KJH's portrayal of Yul was. His smiles are awkward and somehow put a lag on his scenes. The most torturing part for me was his conversation with his aunt and grandma. It's like he forgot his lines and didn't know what to do so, "okay, i'll just keep this saint of a smile on my face and everything'll be fine." How can he be the friendly one? Are you sure u've read tha manhwa? As far as I remember he is a scheming bastard with a good cause(if u can call it that). So of course, there's no way I could compare Yul and Rui. But I did say, I think I'm going to sympathize with KJH's Yul in this drama...with those holier than thou smiles of his and the fact that they altered his character, how couldn't I?hinako442003 wrote: Yul's so cute in the drama . Nonetheless, I can't blame u with your opinion...fangirling is such a hard task that it has the ability to distract you from seeing objectively. I know...I've been through it

why must their apparent personality portray their inner selves when it's not the time yet? It's still at the very beginning of the plot. At this point, you're not suppose to know that he's scheming yet. Even CG said that Yul is much friendlier and easygoing than Shin at Shin's BD party and she herself hasn't realized his motives due to that fact (yes I've read the manhwa). okay, that's it from the unobjective person.

That's not my point. I was commenting on the "Yul is the friendly one" . I'm assuming you know his inner self and u still like him then, right? It's all a matter of preference and I can't do anything with that. As for me, he didn't really get my attention from the manhwa...he's just the usual annoying supporting leading man. But I got hopes for the drama, seeing he might be another potential Jeong Woo (My Girl), where one can't choose clearly between which guy deserves the girl more.hinako442003 wrote:why must their apparent personality portray their inner selves when it's not the time yet? Reading your previous comment, all I got was KJH is cute...such an adorable baby face...and didn't find anything that can actually sway my own views. I'm sorry if I offended you.
i didn't know there was a manhwa exist for this story and so i dl it and read it until volume 8 since there was only translation until volume 8. as far as i can say by reading manhwa i was totally in love with shin character and view yul character as someone who is good but totally lost his way after landing in korea. his character is annoying in the manhwa.* am i the only one thinking like this?*
when i watched the series i was thinking i like yul character better. yeah he smile a lot and i wish he talk more you know. with his grandmother and stuff. his grandmother character in manhwa is so lovey-dovey and i really like her. shin chracter in the series is annoying and is more selfish.i'm not sure if he can potray the unsureness like in the manhwa.
somehow i was expecting there was more dialogue or scene that show their feeling but it's more like beautiful scene in the series.there wasn't really much interactions between the two main character which kind of dissapoint me.well i hope i am not rambling incoherently.

I could have know that, because of something he said somewhere in ep 4
well, I have not read the manga, so it is all new to me. And have not seen HYD either

Oh, I'm sorry, did I spoil it for you? let me edit my post...and like milleu87 and I've noticed, he's actually a likeable character in the drama compare to the manhwa...so it *might* come out differently.knuts wrote:what!!! ermm... actually... Yul was sorta like Jeong Woo for me even when I was reading the manhwa. The character you want to root for but can't because it's obvious the girl likes the other guy. It's apparent why Yul is the way he is. The author makes him that way because this isn't an ordinary competition. He can't just rightfully win her so he has to sabotage from behind. Having him silently admire her and just keep his place would be... boring? Maybe I'm twisted oh well... hoping to see the transition in Yul, cuz I wanna see him act more.

well, everyone has high expectations for this drama. its really something to look forward to especially since it came from a famous korean manwha. the comparison is really unbearable and the criticisms are over the edge.
anyway, a lot of people made great efforts to create this series. i hope none of their efforts will go to waste.
for me, the drama should not have a fast pace but at the same time it should not be slow. its hard to follow the story when the twists are already there while the characters are still being introduced. there should be a convincing and effective transition. an example is Shin's quiet personality to a really naughty one... this method is quite common yet very effective. reminds me a lot of full house. bi's really cold commanding personality to an annoying one.
still, i'm not doing this to save GOONG's reputation. don't worry, it wont escape my verdict.

Yeah they are just doing vol 8 and then no more. Maybe another scan group will pick it up because some feel that if that particular volume isn't translated and licensed yet, they can still do scanlations.
I finally got my internet working to download this which is sad since I've been on this show way before it came out and now I'm so behind. Can anyone give me thier brief opinions as to whether they think the drama
a) is following the manhwa storyline so far and
b) is doing the manhwa justice
Thanks if you can! Too lazy to scroll back.

I've been reading the Goong manhwa (only up to Vol 8 Chapter 1) and caught the first four episodes of the drama.
It's so strange! When I read the manhwa, I really want Chae-kyung to end up with Shin. But in the drama, she has better chemisty with Yul. In fact, Yul is quite the scene stealer especially when he smiles.
A. It's more or less following the manhwa storyline so far.
B. I like how they made the costumes and everything so elaborate and rich. But Yoon Eun Hye as Chae-kyung is the biggest casting oddity to me. In the manhwa, Chae-kyung carried the royalty clothes with flair. In the drama, she just doesn't look the part. Not elegant enough.
In any case, the drama is still pretty good to me.

LMAO i totally agree, though i think that might be down to the fact that the Shin in the manga is a lot better looking that the actor playing him in the drama, i mean hes not too bad looking but The guy playing Yul is definately hotter, i love it when he smiles!!slf wrote:I've been reading the Goong manhwa (only up to Vol 8 Chapter 1) and caught the first four episodes of the drama.

Here you go: http://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtop ... &start=300 . harliey_nick posted this links in the subtitle section yesterday. That's not all the OST. If you have an account at soompi go to the Goong thread and you should be able to find the megaupload link for the OST on the first page.
