Where are you from? / D-addicts' demographics

Posted: Feb 11th, '04, 21:42
by xiaryx
Time for another poll!! I hope the response rate will be greater this time.

Anyway, I am interested in knowing the ul/dl cycle throughout the day, which I am pretty sure is a function of the time zones of the regions where the d-addicters live. Please choose from the options. I know alot of you guys leave that out in the profile because of the issue of privacy. Just in case you are wondering, this is anonymous.

Hey what are you talking about? I live in france for a whole year last year and believe me a lot of french ppl loves asian stuff, as a matter of fact they watch asian (especialy japanese) movies, dramas instead of those american ones, atleast it's like that among the university students. Saying french ppl don't like asiatique drama is like saying french ppl don't hate americans which sounds like a joke to me. :lol

I am born in france ,I have a lot of friends ....and most of them don't aprreciate asiatique drama. They love manga, but don't like drama asiatique .....
I don't critisize them,I just say that it is a shame that their culture are just limited by just what france's culture ...

@snanda, do you have an asian heritage? The reason I am asking is I am very skeptical, that an indigenous European would be interested in asian cinema. I know at least in the States, Asia drama is only limited to asian american, and it is unthink of that a cowboy from Texas would like j/kdrama..(no offense to Texans haha)...

I just have to say that I'm American and have no Asian heritage. I'm a mix of French, German, and Irish; mostly German though. But, I study Japanese while majoring in Comp Science. There are a lot of people like me in my japanese classes(in my 4th right now) and the waiting list for the class is very long. I got into the class during my Freshman year(1st sem too), though. Which is very rare.

I bet there are plenty of Texans watching these too, but I doubt people without an internet connection have been exposed to these dramas though(this implies they can't be found in stores in the area, which is my case).

I can agree that I'm a minority though(wouldn't know for a fact though) because I've found out that Americans usually don't like to read subtitles or listen to strange foreign languages(except french). Also my roommates have always asked why I watch these and complained?, but sometimes I catch them watching my dramas.

no sorry xiaryx , I don't have asian heritage ,I only have indian heritage and I am proud of it... I think every one is unique , and every one must be happy of what he( or she) is because every one has a unique past and I am sure beautiful heritage whatever he (or she) is ...heritage is a treasure ....so I hope that everybody cherrish his heritage like the most beautiful present he (or she) have never had .....

I just want to finish by saying to every one :
Be proud of what you are ,and what you do ...because you have the power to make great stuff .....(which not everybody can... )

I don't have a single drop of asian blood, German/Italian here

And it's probably true, Americans are xenophobic by nature.

And too lazy to read subtitles (true survey fact)

But of course like in everything else we can't generalize....

Ah I hope you didn't misundertand what I was trying to say... I just feel like Asians like asian drama because they can relate better.

However, I do feel disturbed that typical Americans do not enjoy, or may even make fun of or resent foreign cinema. I always feel like America is at a stage a lot similar to that of 1800's China/Japan, and this xenophobic attitude will surely hurt the country in the future.

Just my two cents...

No, not at all. What you said is absolute true. I'm just a Gaijin/Gwailo that enjoys Asian culture (a lot) :w00t:

We have, of course, strayed waaaaay off topic here, but this is an interesting tangent and I just thought I'd get my nickel and a half in... :)

I just wanted to point out that xenophobia is not a trait exclusive to Americans. It is a problem in all nations across all continents. Nobody likes to talk about it, and it certainly isn't a good thing, but you can often see it hiding under more politically correct tags like "nationalism" (and I'm not saying that nationalism is necessarily a bad thing, but it has been my observation that xenophobes like to hide behind flags).

And I think the fact that many Americans aren't fans of foreign cinema is not so much a result of xenophobia as just plain "not knowing what's out there" and being brought up with the very homogenous standards of television in the US. Other countries in Europe and Asia just get exposed to more things because they actually have many close neighbors, each of which has thier own entertainment industry. So i think that just makes them more open and used to foreign programs and subtitles, compared to Americans.

You don't have to be Asian to be able to relate to the stories. Most are just about basic human nature, although it sometimes helps to understand the culture it originates from. But, like I said before, it all boils down to exposure. If you are Asian, it is likely that your parents were watching videos or what-have-you from their native country as you were growing up. So automatically, you have some idea of the possibilities outside of the mainstream entertainment where you grew up, and it kind of snowballs from there....

Anyways, I think I've exceeded my nickel and a half and I don't have another dime on me, so I'll end it here... Please resume normal conversation...
^_^;

:) Kind of like here in the Philippines. Other Asian actors are the in thing here now because of F4 and suddenly almost everybody's into it. Before, people who watch movies w/ language other than Filipino or English are weird. Now those who snubbed non-Filipino movies/series are fans and are all over their tv screens.

So, anyway, like I said I'm from the Philippines :)

D-addicts' demographics

by dofuagedashi
I'm very curious about the demographics of this website (i.e. fans of J and K dramas.) My initial hypothesis is that most fans are Asians (including Asian Americans) I've noticed a few Europeans as well. That's very interesting !!! Of course, I may be jumping into conclusions and my hypothesis could be totally off.

This is just out of curiosity and is meant to be voluntary. You shouldn't mention your ethnicity, residence, or citizenship if you don't feel comfortable doing so...

Let me start...
I'm Asian American (Singaporean descent), residing in NY, USA.

P.S. No flames please. If you think this is stupid / feel uncomfortable to reply, then you don't have to.

Cheers.

heritage...

Well i'm european (with french origine) and proud to be european :)

About France i believe we have a long heritage of loving japanese culture because all the children (up to the guys in their early 30's now) where used to watch anime while childhood. (goldorak, Candy, alps no shoujou AKA heidi etc)

we all grew up watching japanese anime, more than any other country in europe and north america. So when we grow up our interests stay tuned to japanese culture. I believe it is not a wired trendy stuff for nerds to be a japanese culture lover. Actually the more time goes the wider our interest grow (language, art, music and so on...)

and that's a good thing. We open to asian culture in general ( hk, k, tw, sg, c vt) and make friends in a lot of countries. ^________^

PS: what i like in dorama is that even as a granpa one day i'll still be young enough to watch it ^_- While anime tend to be less interesting for me as i'm getting older (25)

PS2: hmm... ::glups:: well i'm still an otaku though :D i nearly went hikikomori

Hi,
I am a chinese girl from the Netherlands, maybe you don't know it, because it's a very small country in Europe. Because of this, the english series and movies on TV are always subbed (they don't make a lot dutch movies). So, I'm kind of used to reading subtitles. I still think the subbing movies is better than dubbing them. Because all the english movies and series are subbed, the people here are learning English far better than the countries which use dubbing, like France and Germany.

At first I started to download only manderin spoken dramas and movies, because I wanted to improve my manderin. But later on, I also began to watch a few Anime, and I got totally hooked. I also began to liking the japanese language and recognising it, when I heard it. So now I'm hooked with watching these drama's from this site. Because of that I haven't wriiten anything for my master thesis in business for a month now. Haha, I'm just very lazy and the japanese/korean drama's here make it worse :) The good thing of this site, is that it made me appreciate the asian culture more. I used to be very westernized, but I have fount my roots back :D

I'm an American (NJ) of Italian/German heritage living in a small town in Japan. Haven't watched any Chinese or Korean drama yet, but at least with the Japanese drama it speaks more about the society's life and culture rather than traditional Japanese culture. So, it would be relevant to anyone who has studied anything about Japan or is interested at all in Japan, rather than only those who are Asian by birth. I could possibly even go so far as to say I get more out of it than a Japanese person who was either born abroad or left Japan at a young age. They know Japanese culture, but I know Japanese daily life and I think the second is a bit more important in these dramas.

this is why i love forums so much. people are gathered together from all over the world to share and discuss their common interests, recommend reviews, and get to know one another.

i think it's great that there are people of non-asian heritage, who are also proud of their own heritage, but are also interested in the entertainment world of other cultures. i, for one, am of chinese origin but born in the United States, but most of the time...i much rather watch asian dramas. i mean, u can learn so much more from them than american tv shows [language-wised and experience-wised]. plus, they're so much more detailed with plots so intricate at times that makes u want to pull out ur hair. tha'ts how good they are~.

a lot of my friends don't understand my obsession with anime, korean, japanese, taiwanese, and hk dramas. so, sometimes it seems as though i'm not so "westernized" and even "fobby" to them. i don't mind because i know they're only kidding and sometimes just for the hell of it, i'll pull out some korean or japanese sayings that i've learned just from watching those shows.

bah....sorry for the rambling~ :lol

Actually they did, |sUiZiD|-chan, they just grouped it together with Japan :O Oh, the injustice .... oh well, guess they assume this is a fansub-ish forum (ie: people looking for subtitles diff from the original language), there's less likely to be native speakers... :x ... oh, by the way, I'm neither Japanese nor Korean, just for the record 8)

Hello, I'm from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. :D I'm Malay mixed Chinese and Indian.

Kind of suprizing to see small countries like M'sia and S'pore there on the poll... since usually we're in a group together with Asia/South-east Asia. But glad to see it anyway. :lol
