Hong Kong Dramas

Post by HongKongChick » Mar 17th, '10, 20:35

Hi all, i have downloaded a few hong kong dramas here before, but most of them are dubbed over in Mandarin. i am from Hong Kong, so i understand cantonese just fine, it's weird to watch cantonese dramas in mandarin. but i do like to have eng subs for them because i have friends that dont understand chinese. haha

i was wondering if any of you are also cantonese and have HK dramas? even with eng subs? and what other dramas would u recommend? i am currently working on some eng subs for my dramas below, some came with subs, but a bit off i guess u could say.

here is a list of the TVB dramas that i currently have:

1. Heart of Greed - Moonlight Resonance (chinese subs, cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Moonlight_Resonance
2. Sweetness in the salt (eng subs, cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Sweetness_in_the_Salt
3. The Gen of life (Chi subs, cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_Gem_of_Life
4. Beyond the realm of conscience (chi subs, cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Beyond_the_Re ... Conscience
5. The dance of passion (chi subs, cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_Dance_of_Passion
6. War and beauty (chi subs, Cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/War_and_Beauty
7. Journey to the West (chi subs, Cantonese and mandarin) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Journey_to_the_West_(TVB)
8. Journey to the West II (chi subs, Cantonese and mandarin)
9. Rosy Business (eng subs, Cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Rosy_Business
10. The Four (eng subs, Cantonese) http://wiki.d-addicts.com/The_Four

I downloaded from this site Triumph in the Skies and it has English subtitles.I haven't had time to watch it yet though. I just browsed a bit through it.
I'm glad to know someone from Hong Kong is around. I'm trying really hard to learn Cantonese and it's quite hard without a teacher. I'd really like to visit Hong Kong one day, but also to be able to speak some Cantonese in order to get along with the people.
Anyway, right now I'm looking for two doramas and I can't find them anywhere. They are Great Adventurer and The Final Combat. If anyone has them, please share.

learning cantonese? wow... very brave my friend. :)

cantonese is hard, real hard. we have 9 tones instead of 4 in mandarin, english has no tones, switching from none to 9 can be very very difficult. u might end up saying "crazy man" instead of "computer" at the computer store!!! HAHAAH LOL

Haha! Yeah, I admit the tones are giving me quite a hard time. But the hardest is the writing. The characters look really beautiful, but you have so many of them. But I can look on the bright side: if I can't distinguish between the tones, I can always write down what I want to say. That way people can distinguish the meaning. :-) As for conversation, for the moment 我識聽一啲。 I sure hope that was written ok. :D

Where do you usually get TVB dramas? I've been looking Born Rich with English sub. yesasia seems to have the DVD with English subtitle, but the "add to cart" isn't available. I'm hoping someone would rip the drama and post them here. :lol

Well if you want to visit HK its not that hard. I go there almost every year and in HK English is everywhere. Theres a recent one called Princess Married. Its kinda geared for middle aged viewers because of the time period but its hilarious. :D
