well from my view, i started liking japanese music when i first heard *loveless*
it was like 10/10 lol so i started doing research on jmusic , i asked my friends , etc
so up till now i really like from top to bottom = most favorite to ok.
1)ayumi hamasaki ( my favorite!!!!! best singerr of all time. very admirable.)
2)BoA
3)Morning Misume
4)utada hikaru
5)AI Otsuka
6)Chemistry
7)dir en grey (good rock
)
asian kung fu generation
hope the list helps. but i really recommend ayumi hamasaki.. she write her own lyrics, make her own song. from her dropping out from the model career she highly boost to a top ranking . her songs are really... touching because her emotions and thoughs are used to make these songs

Straightener
L'arc en Ciel
Snow
Angela Aki
Anna Tsuchiya (Nana)
ellegarden

Asian Kung-Fu Generation was the first Japanese band I listened to, and I've been hooked on them since, so they get first place. After that...I'm not too sure. It was a little High and Mighty Color then Gackt, and then it was Shikao Suga who I say is very smooth with his music.
Now I'm in a UVERworld sort of stage as well as Akeboshi.

I just saw this thread and I have to second that pokute!!!pokute wrote:R.I.P. voodooninjamunky.

I am more into JRock but I listen to a lot of different genres.
My list is :
BUCK-TICK - My all time favorite group! For me they can do no wrong!

Malice Mizer - I was into them especially during the Klaha era. (Yes I am an oldhead) But appreciated the Gackt era more after they broke up. Go fig.
Merry - This group kicks Arse!!! Absolutely love them and the song 'Japanese Modernist' is one of my all time faves by them.
Utada Hikaru - For some reason her music really moves me. I am not a fan of all of her work but the ones that I love by her I love passionately.
Schwarz Stein - I LOVE industrial music and these guys are fabulous. I really miss this group.
Abingdon Boys School - For some reason I really like this group!!! Has T.M. Revolution as the lead and it is a real difference from him solo.
Gackt - I may have lost some of my crediblity by listing him (LOL) but I honestly love his voice and his music solo more than with MM.
But in all honesty I listen to A LOT of JRock. I may like a song here and a song there from different artist however. If I list them all I will be here for an hour typing!!!

Other artist that I am listening to at the moment are Base Ball Bear, MELL, Zwei, Kaya, Sugizo, and Deadman.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but what about TRICERATOPS?
They're a softer J-Rock band which is pretty under the radar, but the music has some good funk and old-school rock elements to it...
Here are two recent MVs which I think capture their vibe:
Warp:
Bokura no ippou:
Out of curiosity - any Triceratops fans out there?

hey all, can someone recommend some artists for me? i see here that most of the recommendations here is for rock and pop, so i don't know if this genre is popular in Japan. i'm looking for .. how can i explain this... clubbing music. what kind of music do japanese clubs play? i'm thinking of hip hop/r&b. i mean, like korea, there's Bi and Se7en, but what about japanese music? is there some equivalent? i cannot think of any japanese artist off the top of my head right now that has music similar to that style, something with a good beat to it.
thanks in advance!

If you are into Hip Hop styled music (which is called Hip Pop in Japan) you can try artist like DBSK (I like the song Rising Sun even though I am not a big Hip Pop fan), Crystal Kay (half Black/Half Korean but sings in Japanese), Namie Amuro, and Koda Kumi.angeizahoy wrote:hey all, can someone recommend some artists for me? i see here that most of the recommendations here is for rock and pop, so i don't know if this genre is popular in Japan. i'm looking for .. how can i explain this... clubbing music. what kind of music do japanese clubs play? i'm thinking of hip hop/r&b. i mean, like korea, there's Bi and Se7en, but what about japanese music? is there some equivalent? i cannot think of any japanese artist off the top of my head right now that has music similar to that style, something with a good beat to it.

I would really recommend that you go to YouTube.com or VEOH.com and check them out! Hopefully you can find something that you like with these artist.

Some artists I am listening to right now (links are to their respective wikipedia articles):
L'Arc~en~ciel (Great J-Rock, been a fan of them for a long time now)
THE BLUE HEARTS (They are basically legends from late 80's-late 90's. They're really good)
GO!GO!7188 (Funky rock/pop band, really fun to listen to)
MiniMoni (Who could resist cute little girls singing about strawberry pie
)
NewS (Good 'ole boy bands with good voices)
Arashi (Another good boy band)
Monkey Majik (Okay, well they are Canadian, except the drummer, but they sing in both English and Japanese and are considered a japanese band and have a really cool and unique sound to them.)
KAT-TUN (More boy bands lol)
Utada Hikaru (It's Utada Hikaru I'm sure someone has recommended her already lol)
Aural Vampire (Funky jtrance, which seems to be a bit non-existent..)
High and Mighty Color (J-rock! I went to their concert at Acen, they rocked so much)
Perfume (Techno mixed with a bubbly sound and cute lyrics)
Funky Monkey Babys (Yes, spelled "Babys")
KinKi Kids (So cute and their new 10th anniversary album "39" just came out)
GReeeeN (Odd name, but good sound)
Abingdon Boys School (Cool jrock band formed by T.M. Revolution who you should check out as well)
Okay I'm going to stop now... list is getting a little long lol..

Japanese hip-hop/R&B/Urban... all I know is m-flo (they do a lot of collaborations with other artists), ZEEBRA, Ketsumeishi....Nao'ymt is a composer, he does a lot of r&b, and hip-hop music. Check out his official site, he has a lot of his songs on there that you can listen to and he works with Namie Amuro who claims to be the "Queen of Hip-Pop". AI is a female rapper, she's also worked with Namie, they were in a group together called "Suite Chic", you should check that out....umm... I'm sure that if you check out the Samurai Champloo OST there should be some songs too.angeizahoy wrote:hey all, can someone recommend some artists for me? i see here that most of the recommendations here is for rock and pop, so i don't know if this genre is popular in Japan. i'm looking for .. how can i explain this... clubbing music. what kind of music do japanese clubs play? i'm thinking of hip hop/r&b. i mean, like korea, there's Bi and Se7en, but what about japanese music? is there some equivalent? i cannot think of any japanese artist off the top of my head right now that has music similar to that style, something with a good beat to it.

Nope... unless the song has a direct tie-in to a drama, we'd prefer to leave that stuff to the other places that actually focus on music.a03 wrote:i thought ERIKA's FREE which was released recently was pretty sweet.... but i'm not sure if i can post the torrent link here. . . . . . . *looks around*
Read the D-Addicts FAQ before asking questions.
No movies here, so please don't request. Check the Asian Movie Torrent Links.

This thread is quiet.. Hehe..
Listen to & love:
Yui - all her songs! Yui rawks!!
Utada Hikaru - the best vocal range in J-Pop
Otsuka Ai - "Peach" never fails to cheer me up n "Planetarium" is simply haunting
Orange Range - Ikenai Taiyou is the best song to listen to when I jog
Most of the songs I listen to are inspired from anime, j-doramas n j-movies. Otherwise, I don't really follow the j-music scene that much. I watched Music Station just for the fun of it.
