But that might be wrong transliteration again, as I don't have kanji/kana text.

Because the Japanese writing system was constructed off of the Chinese one. All Kanji were adopted from the Chinese. Chinese doesn't have an alphabet it's completely "Kanji" becasue their writing system represents concepts not sounds. The Japanese kana came later in developing their language.

Really, the Japanese could just get rid of Kanji all together and their language would still be readable. But it's just the way it has been since forever so I don't think it will change.

don't know if this is correct or helpful but its kinda like what someone mentioned before. There are many words in japanese that sound the same and are actually spelled the same but have different meanings. For example あい can be 愛 as well as 藍which is indigo(the color) another example is Sake which are spelled exactly the same さけ but have different kanji and meaning 酒(the drink) and 鮭(salmon). The Kanji is used instead of the hirangana to provide the reader with sort of like a hint of what the person is actually talking about. Like if i was to say 酒を大好きです you know i'm talking about the drink but if i were to just leave it in hirangana さけを大好きです The person reading wouldn't know if i'm talking about the drink or the fish. 分かった？Hopefully u understand lol sorry for the long explanation

1) a slang contraction for "dore dake," an emphasized "how much"
e.g. Dondake jikan kakaru no yo!

Just HOW much time do you need!? / Just HOW long is this gonna take!?

2) A word recently gaining in popularity which often carries an effeminate/gay tone to it (although other speakers are now beginning to use it, like young girls). To be honest, I don't know a very good "translation" of it, since I have heard that it is used in many different contexts, at least in the gay community in Shinjuku. However, in the more common usage , it's only used to indicate surprise, shock, or bewilderment. Something like "NO WAY!", "For real?", etc.

I have a question that troubled me for ages. I have a japanese friend before that told me that in japan. People dont use anata as you. It means Dear.. like when a wife call her husband anata.

and also she said that watashi is only for girls. Its kinda gay for guys to use that. I have been to japanese class for a while before. I know its formal but i wonder if they still use it in japan.

I've also seen in dorama that guys usually use ore or boku.. very very seldom for them to use watashi.

cltw666, people do use anata but most ppl read it like anta, it is very formal,so maybe people in japan is not very formal nowadays, they use kimi or omae..which is kinda rude..but young ppl used it alot and not many use formal words anymore, watashi is only for gurls and it's also very formal, but that's wat u must use if u are a gurl, for guys ore is more masculine and like slank, on the other hand boku is formal too, it doesn't relli matter which one you use..

To add on mostly guys use kimi or omae to refer to others (kimi mostly to girls) while girls mostly just say the persons name instead of anata (1 of the reasons also is cause it makes them sound "cute" and "more girly") or they'd just say anta (as mentioned above)

There are many ways to say the word, crazy, in Japanese.

Hen (へん/ 変）, okashii(おかしい）,atama okashii,(頭おかしい）Baka,(ばか）,kurutteru（くるってる / 狂ってる),Mukatsuku(むかつく）...etc.

I think that watching Jdrama is very good to learn the differences!

That's true. You say Mukatsuku when you are irritated or pissed off or annoyed or something like that.

For example, " He is driving me crazy ! "can be transrated, "aitsu mukatsuku----!"

Crazy can be trasrated into many Japanese, it all depends on.
Hard for me to explain.....

The english word, Crazy is useful I think.

correct me if i'm wrong:
Gomen: is an informal way of saying sorry like between really really close friends.
Gomen nasai: a more formal way of saying i'm sorry or please forgive me
Sumimasen: is like saying sorry much more formal and used mostly in very formal situations like work or around strangers
Shitsurei Shimasu: is a very formal way of saying im sorry (that i'm about to do something rude) used in places like work like if you have to leave abruptly followed by a sumimasen or a gomen (nasai)
hopefully its right please correct me if my explanations are wrong

~nai wake ni ha ikanai and zaru wo enai are basically the same thing, except zaru wo enai is the written form. ~wake ni wa ikanai means unable to do because of external circumstance, so naturally ~nai wake ni wa ikanai means have no choice but to do (cannot not do because of external circumstance).

Those have nothing to do with prohibition. They are more related to action or inaction as a result of circumstance. Obviously if you want to talk about 'can' or 'cannot' do in the sense of ability you need to use potential forms, but you probably know that already.

If you want to prohibit something.. there are various ways. It all depends on whether you are outright saying something is no good, or asking someone, or advising and so on.

eg

nomisuginaide - please dont drink too much (request)
nomisuginai hou ga ii - you had better not drink too much (advice)
nomisugiru beki jya nai - you should not drink too much (judgement)
nomisugireba naranai - you must not drink too much (command or prohibition). (Also the various forms, ba and shitewa and cha, as well as the naranai, ikenai, dame)
nomisugiruna! - dont drink too much! (strong command)

Perhaps I dont have these 100% correct but I havent had any problems in conversation regarding these structures. I would probably say 'anosa, nomisuginai hou ga iinjyanaino?' or something like that. ('hey, wouldn't it be better if you didnt drink too much?') Or if I was going to be polite 'nomisuginai hou ga iinjyanaino desyouka?' ('Wouldn't it probably be better if you didnt drink too much?') Obviously there are social issues to consider when you decide what phrases to use...

Of course if you say 'nomisugi' you are likely going to be referring to alcohol...

You should buy 'A dictionary of basic japanese grammar' and 'a dictionary of intermediate japanese grammar' by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui published by The Japan Times Ltd. if you are serious about learning Japanese. A great couple of reference books. indexed in romanji for lazy people.

I think you mean, "nomisugitewa naranai." (the wa is hiragana ha when you write.)

I also thought when we say ~~~~reba.
This is just an example.
nomisugireba futsukayoi ni naru.----If you(I,we..etc) drink too much, you(I, we etc) will have a hangover.
But, "nomisugireba futsukayoi ni naru" itself sounds like it is a fact, so in conversation you would probably say....Hmmmm.....

nomisugireba futsukayoi ni naruyo. (it implies you should not drink too much.)
nomisugiruto futsukayoi ni naruyo. (It is the same meaning. I usually say this one.)

..I think you know about it though...

...Japanese is as difficult as English.....

Sorry my bad, I see what you mean, it should be 'tewa'. I wouldnt say nomisugireba naranai normally myself, that was a mistake, I should have checked it before I posted. I would often say 'nomisugicha dame da yo' because the people I would drink with spoke very informally anyway. But of course there are always other times, like at people houses and so on. Well anyway, I probably got wasted more times myself at the pub than trying to persuade other people not to..

Also I naturally would use 'to' to describe a factual situation, as in the statement of fact that drinking too much makes you drunk etc.

However do recall structures like 'shitara ii' and 'sureba ii' which can be used for advice meaning 'should' as well. eg 'ne, dou sureba ii ?' as 'in what should i/we do?'. Cannot this also be used in the negative sense, as in 'sou sureba dame da' as 'you/we should not do that' ?

I don't have particularly great Japanese, so there is still heaps I don't know. So many grammar points half understood, so many words half memorized...I need to study more.

I will always be there for you = いつでもここにいます。(Itsudemo koko ni imasu.)

I am doing my best in learning Japanese = 日本語（にほんご）の勉強（べんきょう）に頑張って（がんばって）います。(Nihongo no benkyou ni ganbatte imasu.)
I am learning Japanese through books and CDs = 本（ほん）とCDで日本語を勉強しています。(Hon to CD de Nihongo o benkyou shite imasu.)
I'm a university student = （私は）大学生（だいがくせい）です。([Watashi wa] daigakusei desu.)
I'm a high school student = （私は）高校生（こうこうせい）です。([Watashi wa] koukousei desu.)
English literature = 英文学（えいぶんがく/eibungaku)

Oh, and the proper way of saying "21 years old" is "nijuuissai", not "nijuuichisai". It's still written ２１歳（二十一歳） but it's pronounced differently.

もしあなたが私ならどうしますか？　is ok, but I would say もし、○○さんならどうしますか？or if you want to say it more polite, you can say, もし、○○さんならどうなさいますか？

私であるなら makes sense, but it sounds like literary or mathematical, or logical or something...I am sorry I can't explain it very well...

Here is a quick answer

1) Where are you going?
- どこへ行くんですか。　(Doko e iku n　desuka.)
- どこへ行くのですか。　(Doko e iku no　desuka.)
　
2)What are you doing?
- 何してるんですか。　　(Nani shiteru n desuka.)
- 何してるのですか。　　(Nani shiteru no desuka.)

ん(n) is a phonologically shortened form of の(no).
