...which begs the question, "who wants what?" I have seven stations out of Hokkaido. The listing is as follows:

If anyone sees anything they like, please tell me. I'll try and record and share as much as I can, because honestly Japanese programming is very hard to find on the internet, (excluding special events, news, and random clips here and there). My service will be installed by Saturday 6:00pm PST, so don't request anything before then.

Thanks to anyone who is interested, I'll try and get to as many requests as I can, (my DVR can only record up to two shows at once, so hopefully I don't receive 3 requests for the same time. I doubt that'll happen though).

EDIT: I got the DVR working, setup, and ready to record. Everything looks good, and the quality for the HD channels is very, very nice. Here is the list of shows to record (it's on auto-record, so if it's listed it'll record every episode until I tell it to stop):

I'd make it an (img) but it's capped at a high-resolution and i don't want to break the frames of the page. If anything is missing please tell me. I'd hate to miss an episode for monday, and have to wait a week to record something for someone.

Ok, so I've been working here and there for the best way to get everything to you guys, and it seems I will need to record from my DVR connection, to my computer, (much like a VCR). This is time consuming, but is the only way to get the media off the device, due to encryption, etc.

Now this isn't the biggest problem. I've tested codecs, and software, and I thought I had found the best mix of the two last night. I tried using ffdshow demuxer with a JMPEG codec for best quality. This worked great, but took up around 4 gig per 1hr. Again, I have the space and resources to do this, (I would record, then send through virtualdub and encode in h264, or xvid).

However, I also found the option to record the show straight to DivX. I tried this, and the quality was so-so. It looked alright, and the size was average, (400mb for 1hr), so I left the computer on stand-by and uploaded the show. This is the result:

Very poor quality. I saw the suggestions you gave (excluding stage6), but will shy away from them for these reasons:

- If a person wants to download multiple episodes in a day, they will have to wait a long time. Services like the ones you gave me limit the users download bandwidth, and force them to wait outrageous queue times every 300mb or so, (about the size of a show).

- The files have a higher chance of being deleted. It's annoying, and I plan on keeping these files on DVD-R DL every 9gig I go through. Having to find the specific DVD with the specific file to then RE-upload seems ridiculous.

Now onto stage6. I think the site is great, and the quality is superb. Unfortunately, they are very delete friendly. I know I may be biased, but they deleted a Drama I was watching mid-through, and I've never been able to finish it since. Yes, I do think the site is great, but with my history with the site, not to mention is required codec download leaves me to believe it isn't that reliable.

Until then, I will continue to use Google Video. I'm going to go another pass through this show with another codec, and see if I get any better results. Also, here is a comparison between what I'm recording from, and what my result was earlier:

EDIT: I changed the size of the images, and took the (img) tag out, (they were WAY too large). Also, here is a sample of an xvid direct-to-stream converter I've been trying out. Best quality/size so far, but it resized the video, (nothing a few minutes of work can't help):

I would like to request "Tonneruzu minasan no okage deshita" or "とんねるず　みなさんのおかげでした". Redrum uploaded this for a while, but he said he couldn't find any more of these episodes. I miss this show very much.

Popping by to thank you for offer to upload too. To be honest, capturing the number of shows of your list + trying to fill requests seems a little ambitious. It's not just the capturing but time needed for reencoding to divx, plus seeding to tracker.

Try limiting yourself to 2/3 programs max a day and perhaps avoid any clash in recording with what is already available in all other trackers. For example Smap x Smap is already captured and uploaded onto this tracker by massaru san so there's perhaps no need for you spend encoding time and bandwith uploading it again. Just record it for your own viewing pleasure.

Just record stuff you personally enjoy watching or already enjoyed by many on this tracker but sources have become irregular/hard to find (yes Tonneruzu minasan no okage deshita or even Ai no Apron 愛のエプロン Thur 19:00 HTB does come to mind). It's quite a pain in the ass sometimes to be encoding stuff where you've zero passion for. Unless you're a crazy ass SMAP fan, then filling all three 笑っていいとも！, 黒バラ and ザ！世界仰天ニュース is quite a bore for many here. Just personal opinion here (don't shoot me)....iIt's nicer to have a variety of stuff.

Okusama wa Gaikokujin is alright... it's changed since it first began and seems a little "commercialized" now.

I used to record and encode every major weekly music show at Jpopsuki... and it just became too much and people would just leech.

Don't burn yourself out, though... I've cut back on only do a few shows from time to time... and only continue if folks are kind enough to say something in passing when downloading.

Eigo de Shaberanaito is a program hosted by Patrick Harlen; it's basically an eikaiwa show that does much more than the typical classroom style of most eikaiwa shows. Oshikiri Moe was added to the cast after Shaku Yumiko was dropped. They throw in American celebrity interviews, silly adventures using English, and Pakkun's English Test. Lately, they've been having more Japanese stars with a base in English featured as their main weekly guests.

Aside from that, I'm impressed with your offer. Hell, I'll lend a hand. I've been slacking on encoding HaneTobi lately, so I'll work on that. I can also work on Tunnels ... which is on air right now with Garage Sale... and maybe even Okusama... since I like the show.

Haha, well it's been a very arduous process. I documented most of the problems I've been happening earlier:

An associate in Hokkaido knows someone who runs a colocation site. After talking with him over the phone we discussed setting up a virtual terminal for me to access a DVR, setup through a colocated server and streaming off a Slingbox. The slingbox streams a Windows Media 9 stream, (11 will be updated in fall for a Vista optimized firmware), and is by default, a 320x240 stream. The software can force the stream to "look" 16:9, (much like VLC does), but the stream itself is 320x240. The reason this has caused problems is because the 16:9 stream is stretched vertically, giving the result I had in the previous post.

Over the past couple of days I've found a working setup to compress and record my videos. I'm saving my stream directly, (no compression), and then stretching the video from 320x240 to 428x240, (3:4 -> 16:9), and I barely lose any quality from the original source. Unfortunately, since this is NOT straight off the DVR, I'm having to encode a STREAMING version of this video (which in itself is already compressed). It's a trade-off, but it's the only thing I can do, (I don't have the resources, time, or money to do anything else, so this is the cheapest alternative for what I can do at the moment).

Obviously the video won't look superb, nor will it look excellent or even great. It will be watchable, and will be accessible. I may change how I record these shows, or even how I upload them in the future, but right now I'm trying to get something out to those who have been waiting, and every day I spend tinkering around is another day of video I fall back on. If anyone has suggestions to build off what I've already stated, please share, but nothing drastically different. Right now it takes about 1hr to record, 1 hour to encode, and 2 hours to upload a 1hr show. Because of this I may limit the amount of video I record per week, and only record what is needed, or really wanted. 2-3 hours a day is about all I can do at the moment, in-between school and work.

I do think this is quite an undertaking, and I agree with what most of you said. The problem with "recording what I like" is that I stopped watching television out of Japan a very long time ago, (2003?), and haven't acquired much of a taste for what is on now. Even when I was over in Japan during 2005-2006, I only sat down to watch the news, and Sasuke, (yes, really). It's pretty funny looking back on it now, I was watching American television of Japanese television about 5:1 and I was in Japan. I would usually download the latest show off NBC or FOX, and watch it on my way to work. I may have been sick of Japanese, and it was just a quick break from it all - either way, I do find it funny that I'm not going out of my way to watch what I could've religious sat down for no more then a year ago.

From what everyone said it doesn't look like I'll have a set schedule of recordings until next week. My DVR is already up to 23 hours, (it's been running since monday morning JST), so I have a lot to weed through. I'm glad so many people are interested, but I hope I can keep this going for a while. To be honest it's not taking a whole lot of work out of me. I start my DVR ahead of time, then I set my computer to record the DVR's recording, then I convert the file to 16:9, (and cut the beginning/end), and then upload. All-in-all I only spend about 5 minutes of manual labor, and only click my mouse about 7-8 times. As stated above though, this background process takes about 4 hours, (if I record an episode, and encode an episode, then upload them all at the same time I can usually pull off 4 episodes every 8 hours). OK wow this post is LONG (again!), sorry but I don't have time to re-read and cut out everything that isn't needed. I'll be sure to update everyone throughout the week on what I'm recording, what I have recorded, what is uploaded, etc., (by the way, this won't be seeded due to size over quality. Even though I'd be sharing a 400mb clip, the quality is roughly VHS quality (check up on the quote above), sorry!).
