I think it's a shot that they get when they're children. My parents both have one and we aren't even Korean so I don't think it's just a Korean thing.

Yes, its vaccination shots. Koreans have a big fat one. While Japanese have like 6 small ones in a rectangular pattern, that's barely noticeable.

^^it's most likely a smallpox vaccination. they're given with bifurcated needles and a "take" involves a scar formation. otherwise, they might administer it again to make sure that the vaccination took.

edit: found a site with a picture of the needle used. also, you can see that it's usually given in the upper arm, so that's why you'll usually see the scar there.

Yeah, it's a smallpox vaccinnation. I have one on my left shoulder. I took it when I was really really really young, so I don't remember how much it hurts. These days, the scar left from the shot becomes invisible after a while. Mine didn't. >.<

I was wondering about this too. I see a lot of female stars have it on their upper left shoulder.

I have one of my left arm as well, but the scar is hardly visible. I got the vaccination when I was 12. Not sure what it was for. :P

I was going to say that I have one too, but then so many beat me to it. Mine is not too pronounced anymore, since it is about 30 years old, but at one time it showed quite well. Maybe we could start an inoculation club. Eh… maybe not... :whistling:

A little late by the date

I got them too, the scars can be quite ugly depending on your sensitivity to the vaccine. But seriously I think it's most likely was the BCG shots (Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin), the tuberculosis vaccine, if I'm not mistaken part of the UN program to eradicate TB in Asia. Still have nightmares about this girl that just won't stop crying and struggling and made the needle broke from the syringe. Urghh.

WOW lol I noticed that to. I have a scar like that only because some psyco chick at my school decided to jam a pencil into my sholder.. I still to this day have no idea why. It was totally unprovoked.

Funny, how you said FOB scar. I think it's true. It's vaccination but this scar is only on asians and only shots given back in the asian countries too. Not sure how the shot was given but why does it have to leave you a scar. I got one on my right arm too. It must have been given when I was very very young. 'Cause I can't remember anything about it.

my mom told me she told the doc to do the shot on my
butt...
so i guess mine's there... where nobody can see it

Man I wonder what kinda shot does that though seriously. Why is it only in a specific region? You would think if it was some sorta urgent vaccine like everyone would have a scar.

wow, i didn't know it was a common thing. I did notice a lot of actors and actresses have scars on their shoulders but never thought it was a common thing due to vaccination shots. very informative.

Odd thing is, is this a shot that only koreans get? It seems a bit brutal that a shot that would leave a scar.

It was a common Asian thing for the time; it was given in China, too. Anyone who could get one would be better off for it, since getting the disease is a lot worse than ending up with a scar. :)
