And I'd say this is where you should search, and in case there's no answer, ask: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewforum_9.htm

The most common reason for seeing blocks while watching subtitles is that your system doesn't have the required fonts to display asian text.
If the page http://news.bbc.co.uk/chinese/simp/hi/default.stm shows up primarely as squares then you'll have to install the asian language pack to your system - It's an easy fix. Read up on it Here or try google if you're not using XP.
Hope this helps

Your computer needs to have Japanese fonts installed. Being able to read Japanese online only means your browser supports Japanese. It doesn't mean your whole system does.
A fast and simple solution would be to install NJStar Communicator. When running it sort of overlays a filter onto all windows and programs which will makes Japanese, Chinese, and Korean appear properly.

I was under the impression that browsers rendered text using the OS fonts rather than using 3rd party versions? But I could be wrongPuppet Princess wrote:Your computer needs to have Japanese fonts installed. Being able to read Japanese online only means your browser supports Japanese. Most common fonts like Arial have unicode versions of them compatible with Asian characters. I noticed that my Xbox lacked support for chinese characters the other day so I took the MSArialUnicode.ttf from my fonts folder and moved it over. Worked like a charm, so if you have a recent edition of MS Office installed you could tell VLC to use that as a font as an alternative to installing the IME or using 3rd party software overlays. This is what I usually do at places were the lack of administrator rights stops me from installing the IME.
Right so basicly if you already have the IME installed and is able to read and type japanese just change the font that VLC uses. Also if Vobsub is running for some reason (due to a codec pack installation) you might have to change it there instead (Usually appears like a green arrow in your taskbar).it's just the japanese softsub doesn't work with vlc. maybe i need to add some fonts to vlc or a plug-in but i don't know how.
Hope this helps

I downloaded a special font (see link). It should be added to the system and then chosen in VLC. So the Japanese is visible.
I found this solution in a thread that I don't remember, so sorry for not crediting the source - r.
Or use this solution (included: Howto install fonts)
