How fast is your internet connection?

I am with 256Kbps upload speed which equals 32 kB upload in file size terms. I supposedly have a 3Mbps download speed. Does this seem way out of proportion?

I have heard of much higher upload speeds.

I have Charter Communications for an ISP and pay about $50.

What size upload speed do you have? I am trying out the poll feature for the first time here. I hope it works.

Google the words 'speed test' and you will get many free speed test websites. You will have to turn off Bittorrent and other internet programs to get good speed test results.

I have comcast and I have noticed that the spped is tied to the time of day when most people are on. It's very fast most of the time and I can get dl speeds from 700 to 1.5 mbs. It's an easy 2x faster that my qwest dsl connection.

max is 39kb/sec, saw it skyrocket to 50kb/sec when SBC first upgraded...too bad it came aaaalllll they way back down. Still better than the old 25kb/sec though.

I feel your pain on the u/l and d/l differences Dmorgan. I have Comcast here in the East Bay, and my d/l varies between 2 megs to 8 megs or so peak, with a whopping 256k (32 KBps) upload speed, and 10K of that is taken up by my voip phone service. I pay about $55 a month for my internet and basic cable service. Seems like I'm one of the slower u/l folks here. *sigh*.

I have 8 mbits/1mbits connection.
my max upload speed is 110 kb/s
The fastest speed that i got from BT is 862 kb/s
I think i once got more than 1mb/s dl speed with firefox (http download)

i'm not even sure if my dl speed is 8 mbits or 24 mbits.. the my isp advertise it 24 mbits but some people get 8 mbits. Well it depends on how far u live from nearest telestation.... as long as i get more 100 kb/s dl speed i don't care

Mine is kind of confusing. It falls between 256-384 kbps.
According to www.dslreports.com/stest, it says 317 kbps for the upload speed.
By the way, how do you convert Kbps to kB/s?
My max would probably be something close to 40 kB/s.

Kbps divided by 8 = kB

e.g. 384 / 8 = 48

It wasn't that long ago that I was only at 128 Kbps for upload speed. I was so excited when they upgraded me.

New rule: All ISP's have to match upload speed to download speed *DREAMING*

Here is me next time they raise my rate and don't raise my upload speed

I have a 128 kBit (max 16 kB/s) upload speed, but in order to maximize upload efficiency and download capacity, I throttle my overall upload to 10 kB/s to allow for ACKs and NACKs.
You see, I usually only peak to 12 kB/s with BitTorrent due to the amount of traffic.

oh, man, i was just about to say that. i was dying with a 128kb upload speed for soooo long. it would take me 8hrs or more to finish someone who only needed a few kB for a seed. uploading a torrent was not even an option. i've since upgraded, and it's so much easier to seed people. it was worth the tremendous trouble i went through to upgrade.

I m using charter also, with 3mb/256kb connection. I am hoping that charter will at least upgrade to a 3mb/512kb connection or better still 5mb/1mb

But i must be in heaven too early. Though i heard charter was holding some pilot testing with a 512kb upload connection.

All the above applies to me as well. It really varies. I've noticed that I simply cannot upload when using BitComet. I've hit really fast dl speeds but the ul speed is so little. So I use azureus to seed, and I usually can ul around the 20-30 ish area total for one torrent. However, I have reached like 75 or so total speed when I ul multiple torrents at one time.

Yes. I think overall Azereus does better in seeding. But if you are usually getting files from peers based in China, Bitcomet is the way to go since it has a way higher adoption rate in China. I also think that though bittorrent is univeral/open source, there are still preferences in the way it delivers datas for the different software client, whereby a specific client might send better (in terms of speed + data accuracy) to others using the same client. I have always note that there are always more bad data + redundancy when I download using Azereus. My connection could be the culprit

It sounds like the only way to get fast and balanced upload/download speeds is at a school. Kinda unfortunate. Commercial ISPs say it reflects typical household usage, but I wonder if they're also doing it to control file sharing.

At home, I've got Charter cable, and it lives up to its advertised 256Kb upload. (1/12 of download speed)

At school, Azureus only rarely goes above 2.5 MB/s upload, but I can't tell if that's the connection or the ancient computer.

256kbps... usual upload speed is around 30-37kB/s.. but it would rarely spike to 60kB/s for a few seconds.

i'm also stuck with that sbc dsl plan..though sbc is offering another plan with 1.5-3mbps downstream and 384-512 upstream. sadly, our apt complex has a contract with one cable company who unfortunately doesn't offer cable access to the internet. and we're in city limits! errr.. hey, can ya'll also post your ISP. If you're really satisfied, please post it!

I feel more informed about who has what for internest speeds. There are a lot of folks in my range and hopefully we will all be enjoying faster speeds from our ISPs and soon!

I hope that someday our upload speed won't be such a huge factor in our downloading speed. Does anyone have optimism that this will be the case?

My upload is the basic 128kb up for a Verizon DSL line, but the download is 700 to 800kb.

On the plus side our area has been earmarked for new Verizon DSL lines with speeds of 5Mb down and 1Mb up. They just completed successful testing in Texas and our city is one the first places to get the service (probably because a Verizon Company building resides here, or maybe the Verizon people love Raytheon, Lockheed, or ITT.)

I supposedly have 16.000 kbit/sec download and 800 kbit/sec upload speed (DSL) - but on testing this, the result is much lower, like 50 - 60% on this. My Azureus sometimes tells me an upload speed of 50 kB/s, but more likely it's 40 kB/s. Nonetheless, I am happy to dl and share with this. Lots better than the 2000 / 128 kbit connection I used before

I have 3MB and can download a 700mb file from megaupload in less than 1 hour. It's ok as long as no one else is downloading or streaming video. We are thinking of upgrading to 10 or 15 Mbps so that it won't matter so much if others in the house are downloading or streaming video.

Capital 'B' stands for "byte". A 1MB connection is about 8 times as fast as a 1Mb connection. A 3MB connection is pretty screaming fast, and you should be able to download a 700MB file in about 5 min.

My speed is 33Mbps, but I rarely see that with torrents. If a file is recently uploaded and has several hundred seeds, I might see 2.7MBps down and 1.8MBps up.

My home connection is slow its 12/2 Mbits :[ 1.5MB download and 250-275KB upload..
But i got a seedbox that i use to seed and download. Seedbox is super fast! I can download at 9.7MB per second and Upload at around 7-8MB per second :] Perfect for torrents

Here in the Philippines 60kbps download speed is a good day for the interenet for us. At least it is for me. Hahahahahhahaha. I take at least a day or two to download an episode. And several weeks to download batch uploads. Hahahahaha.

It's a sad sad speed.

i used to have 100/100mbps, that was so awesome! i finished downloading an episode in like 10 seconds or something. since i moved the internet connection is much slower, but its ok. now it takes about 10 minutes to finish an episode with many seeders.

I do not know why the speed of the torrent is different than the speed of the Internet. (much less) Even if the files of torrent are new and lots of people downloading the same files. @@

And when you're dealing with a torrent, things become exponentially more complex. I'm not familiar with the algorithm that determines who gets what files at what speeds. But there are a few facts that must enter into the equations. For example, most people can download a a far faster rate than they upload. My previous connection speed was 5M down and 2M up. What this means is that if you've got 100 people uploading and 100 people downloading, most of the downloaders aren't going to see their max bandwidth.

Another factor is that although you might see 100 seeds, you don't know how many of them are uploading other files at the same time.

Hmmm...is that 6 MegaByte or 6 Megabit? Some places for speed tests use one or the other. I have a connection of about 800 KiloBytes/second (about 6.4 Megabits/sec.) which is pretty average. I could go with cable but though I have a faster download speed, I do not have unlimited downloads which is what I get with my DSL provider. Cable is about 60 GB per month.

same for me. I'm in indonesia, and mine 2mbps, but I think the number don't give me a thing here. It's faster at dawn and noon, so download when I'm sleeping
