these are some of the jdramas i've seen:

1. Annasan no Omame: not great plot. but really funny.
2. GTO: you have to see this drama. GTO is the king of the school based dramas
3. Orange Days: one of my favorites. everything is amazing. youth, love, career...
4. Long Vacation: wow... this was so funny and the love was all over it.
5. Hanayori Dango 1 & 2: love it. so funny.
6. Stand Up!: one of it kind. so funny.
7. 1 Litter of tears: this was wonderful. this kept me crying all over.
8. HY: if you are into sports, this is for you.

hi, first post but have been reading the forums for awhile. i was watching a drama awhile ago and forgot what the name of it was. in one of the episodes at the end, they were on a roof top early in the morning and when the sun rises it reflects part of the billboard so you can only see part of the words in the sentence. these words ended meaning i love you or something like that. does anyone know which drama that is? thanks in advance.

Hmm...

Hana Yori Dango. I personally find it really funny at times. Of course, there might be a bit too much loving, but.... Matsumoto Jun as Domyouji is just priceless.

I also like Attention Please, but that might be a bit too girly, considering the main character wants to be a cabin attendant.

Papa to Musume no Nanokakan (sp?) is fun *nod nod*

Any more...? Hmm... can't think of anyone else that's not mentioned. But yes, Nodame Cantabile and My boss, My hero are worth checking out as well.

Oh! And Hanayome to Papa. I found that really funny at times. *nod nod*

Some, at least ;)

the best jdramas that are romantic and funny I can think of Stand Up!! and Erai Tokoro ni Totsuide Shimatta! Utahime is funny and romantic also but it does focus on drama more than comedy. One Pound of Gospel is romantic in a way but i found the humor cheesy. If you finish Kisarazu Cat's Eye with the movies its romantic! The series is so funny!

Hello!
I was wondering if someone could recommend a more serious jdrama, not a tearjerker, but just something else than the average "school-love-comedy"-drama. I'm sort of fed up with those :P

I find that sshimokita glory days and cupid no itazura has almost no plot at all. It's just ecchi and more ecchi. Anyone know a drama that is kind of ecchi, but with a good story?

I dont think that's possible.....

I think most people watch ecchi dramas not for the plot, but rather for the many J-idols that star in them

However, I would definitely like to see a drama with a bunch of J-idols AND a good story :roll

I've watched the first 3 ep, like the gripping story, awesome acting and fantastic directing/pace. But the setting is a bit too dark for my taste. Think of abandoning the rest of the drama except the last ep! Tear-jearkers are OK but dark dramas always disturb me (Byakuyakou comes to mind).

Tokumei Kakaricho Tadano Hitoshi has some nudity but it's primarily plot driven. Dunno if it's subtitled though.

I think the dark setting is one of the best things about it, since I feel that some dramas tend to get a little too childish. But I guess that we all have different taste :)

Long Love Letter is awesome, although I didn't like the ending. but the post-apocalyptic deathscapes totally made up for it.

Are there any JDrama that are similar to 'Last Friends'?

Post by Amber111 » May 24th, '08, 23:32

I have just recently started watching Last Friends and I must say it's very intriguing!! I have always watched romantic comedies because they're always so funny and entertaining but now after watching Last Friends, I realize that serious dramas can also be entertaining to watch. I feel like I might be missing out on some really good dramas. Does anyone know any japanese dramas that have a similar serious style to Last Friends with a hint of romance? :roll

im guessing the genre you want is most likely what last friiends is calling, "real life situation" drama.

14 Sai no Haha (tho this one was of somewhat amateurs, i cried in alot of it)
1 litre of tears (ive never seen it, but ive heard its a pretty serious drama)
first kiss (i know this one is of romance)

You should definitely watch One Litre Of Tears or 1Litre No Namida
Another very good one is LIFE. It's about the problems caused by bullying and just bullying in general. It's a very dramatic drama and I strongly recommend it.

Yeah, 1 litre of tears is a must watch for any serous jdrama viewer. You get to see Nishikido Ryo playing a much more likable character.

There's not a lot of romance involved at all but I'd recommend Karei Naru Ichizoku if you're looking for a more serious, dark jdrama.

Er, Beautiful Life? Haha, just getting nostalgic.

Seriously, I tried to think of any drama that is like Last Friends and came up with nothing...Of course there are those sad dramas like 1 Litre of Tears, Beautiful Life, Taiyou no Uta and God Please Give Me A Little More Time which deals with how people live and love while facing the cruel fate that they're dealt with. But Last Friends...I wouldn't categorize it as a sad drama even though there's a lot of angst. LIFE is really good too. If you like the DV part, you should watch it. Lol, j/k...LIFE is a drama that portrays that desperateness and rawness very well. There's plenty of friendship in it, but no romance. If you like the whole mystery aspect of the show, wondering what issue each of the characters have, I'd recommend Galileo. That's totally out of the left field here since it's a detective kind of drama. Haha, but I really like it. Hint of romance as well. ^^

If you like LF, you can't not like Ueno Juri's performance so I'd recommend checking out the dramas and movies she acted in too.

so, I'd recommend you to watch 1 Litre of Tears.. :-)

I recommend:

1 Litre of Tears: I don't think you can rightfully call yourself a Jdrama fan without seeing this. It's an awfully sad drama that made me cry all throughout watching it and hours long after. But this isn't the type of sad drama that depresses you - it's just the opposite. This is the most inspiring, moving and heart warming drama I've ever seen. I think it's important for everyone, regardless of what genres you like, to watch this.

Hana Yori Dango [seasons 1 & 2]: Very addicting, with a perfect blend of romance, conflict and comedy. One of the most beautifully filmed drama's I've seen. The music played during each episode is also very beautiful and fitting.

HanaKimi: Known as 'Hottie Paradise'. I highly recommend this to anyone who liked HYD. A very funny and unique comedy. This is one of those series where you'll become attatched to each of the characters. Light-hearted with a good message.

Gokusen: I would only recommened the first and orginal season. A drama about an enthusiastic teacher to a class full of delinquients...with some others twists. This drama has a mix of dark and peppy characters that complete each other. Inspiring and meaningful, but with comedy as well.

Boku dake no Madonna: A light hearted romantic comedy. I personally really love this one, but not everyone has. The characters are all somewhat different from what I've seen in dramas before. A very cute and fun show overall.

Forbidden Love: A teacher/student romance. This drama shows the problems they face. The thing I really love about this drama is how quickly it progresses compared to other dramas. It's a very romantic and straight forward drama.

Long Love Letter: This is a really, really intresting drama. It's also very addicting. This drama will never fail to suprise you. Honestly, it's crazy. But I love this drama, except for the end. But even with the unsatisfying end, this drama is worth watching.

My Boss, My Hero: A great and refreshing drama about a 27-year-old yakuza going to high school. A laugh-out-loud drama with meaningful messages mixed in.

Taiyou no Kisetsu (Season of the Sun): A dark drama that can sometimes be hard to watch. This drama puts you in the life of a young man filled with anger, seeking revenge. As he hurts those around him and smiling about it, he meets a girl who slowly changes him. This drama really shows that hate only feeds the fire, for as the lead hurts others, he only hurts himself. I really liked this drama despite it's darkness - it was at times very moving and it was intresting to see life the way someone like the lead does.

Dragon Zakura: A school drama that actually teaches those watching. I really loved the cast and their chemistry.

Proposal Daisakusen: A story about high school friendship and love. A man finds himself at the wedding of his friend he's loved for years but never confessed to. He then is given the ability to go in the past, to his high school days, and try to change his actions that he's regretted. A nice light-hearted drama. Just make sure that if you watch this to also watch the special after.

One Pound Gospel: A cute, funny, and wacky drama about a boxer falling in love with a nun [yes, it is as weird as it sounds]. But I happened to like this drama a lot - It's fun to watch and made me appreciate boxing despite by dislike for sports.

Galcir: This drama has the most outrageous plot and characters, but it's super funny. A good comedy that's really out there, with some moving scenes thrown in.

Kurosagi: A dark but entertaining drama about a con-artist who swindles money from other swinders.

Last friends [currently airing]: This drama covers lots of issues, such as domestic violence and post-tramatic stress. It's full of raw emotion and even with its dark story, is in a light setting that evens it out. This drama shows how four friends deal with their problems and find hope and support through each other.[/b]

Last Friend's screeplay writer wrote "God Please Give Me A Little More Time"
The directors directed LIFE, Proposal Daisakusen, Galileo and Bara no nai Hanaya.

I think it's interesting that all above was mentioned...except Proposal Daisakusen which I recommend as well even though it's a bit frustrating to watch. Masami really likes to make people run and work for her huh? Poor Kenzo and Ruka.

Okay i have watched too many romance stories or school dramas with the same stories for example the usual school drama story i have seen so many times is a gangster teacher comes to school and makes a bad class into a good one, you know which dramas i'm talking about :P

I want to watch an action/thriller types of drama something like Rondo(which i finished watching yesterday). something with lots of action and with a cool main guy, who doesn't care about anybody but then falls for a girl or a good drama with a guy who wants revenge and goes into the crime world(kurosagi) something along those lines

So i would really appreciate it if you could help me :salut:

I just want to second Orange Days. It was...amazing. The acting was so convincing, and the material was very very good. The music is enchanting, and even though the musical faking is more obvious than in, say Nodame Cantabile, it's still very good. And Tsumabuki is adorable.

Post by kikot84 » May 29th, '08, 21:45

Hi,

Can some suggest any good J-dramas that take place in Jr High or High School. I already watched Kinpachi Sensei 6 and 7, Seito Shokun, GTO and I'm going to start Nobuta Wo Produce.

Thanks

It's an old dorama, but it contains friendship, love triangles, a gay, a death, a famous soundtrack, and... a Johnny's (lol)
So that's as close as it gets with Last Friends (minus the DV). ^^;

Jdorama about food

I love Japanese food and like watching Jdorama, so I'm constantly looking out for combination of the two. I like Haikei, Chichiue-sama and enjoying Osen. Can anyone recommend some other good series/movie?

For food? Haha...Zettai Kareshi has a lot of desserts because it's about a dessert company. They have yummy looking cream puffs :) Hehe...not sure how Japanese it is, though.

Bambino is also a drama about food, but they focus more on Italian, not Japanese food.

Outside of what's already been mentioned:
Oishii Kankei (classic)
Shota no Sushi (classic)
Aji Ichimonme
Ohsama no Resutoran / Restaurant
My Little Chef
Kuitan
Koi seyo otome

ehhh... and I guess there's Sushi Oji and Teppan Akane too, but I don't know if they're much "good" based on some of the reviews out there.... :fear:

Recommendations needed

Post by Sajberjohan » May 31st, '08, 17:52

Looking for new jdrama to watch. I like:

Gokusen 1st season
Hanazakari no kimitachi e (which made me a Ikuta Toma fan :> (although Hachimitsu & Clover was mostly boring imo) )
Nobuta wo produce (which made me a Maki fan :> )
Densha Otoko (first episode was the best)
Hana yori dango 1( which made me a Mao fan :> )
II hito (the opening might be the best part though >.>)
Zettai kareshi
oh and ofc GTO drama.

I ´ve started watching First Kiss, Proposal Daisakusen they seem promising but doesn´t have the same impact as some of the above. Oh and I don´t like it when the dramas have a too sad setting (like First Kiss, h8 that kinda stuff but it´s still good so far :S). Also I do like jokes like when the doctor gets run over in Hanzakari and punches the driver and saying what it is he says ( don´t remember what he says but I know I laughed), that kindof stuff :)

Any drama/movie recommendations based on what I like highly appreciated ^^

try this older drama, Koibito Yo. it's a very intense and serious drama about complicated relationships. :thumleft:

the lead actress. Suzuki Honami, reminds me a lot of Nagasaw Masami, both are very pretty and adept at conveying subtle emotions through their eyes.. :D

Koibito yo is really a very good drama though it has a very controversial storyline. you can watch it subbed at Crunchyroll.

i didnt like both Gokusen 2 and 3 because they are just poor duplicates of Gokusen 1. how i wish that they just followed the manga storyline, then we could have seen more developments between Yankumi and Shin. :roll

That was the reason why I didn't watch the 2nd and 3d season! When I read that matsujun didn't take part in them I gave up on that series and imagined a happy end with the two of them being together

... soo.. I've a request... I posted exactly this post at another board :whistling:
But I'd love to get as many recommendations as possible, since I've a lot of freetime to watch TV ^__^
... here it goes:

I just watched a bunch of romantic dramas and still I can't get enough :P
But somehow I want something a bit "fresher". I just watched >with love< and to be honest, it was a bit ...exhausting? getting on my nerves? Always repeating the messages etc...
I don't have anything against this stereotypical stories (although I welcome any new 'ideas')
The romance doesn't have to be the main-plot but a bit of romance is always nice =')

so Dramas I liked in that genre are (no order) :

-long vacation
-love generation
-pride (eh? all with the same main actor? just why...? Bleah )
-tatta hitotsu no koi
-nodame cantabile (it still counts as romance, right? ;Wink
-bara no nai hanaya
-orange days
-hitoni yasashiku

I didn't like "Boku dake no madonna", "hanayome to papa" and "Hana yori dango" was just so-so, as well as "Good Luck"

I don't mind if it's sad but I want a Happy Ending! ;;

(Doramas I already watched: http://yolchen.livejournal.com/59010.html)

...this is quite a detailed request right? óo
sorry... maybe someone could help be

really? I gotta watch it this week, or perhaps next week.
ah, streaming?
it's fine, there are j-dorama [of course, also other common movies too] rentals here :P
i didnt like both Gokusen 2 and 3 because they are just poor duplicates of Gokusen 1. how i wish that they just followed the manga storyline, then we could have seen more developments between Yankumi and Shin. Roll Eyes
D: really? the rating is better than the first [well, i know, rating doesn't mean quality]
Ahh, i heard that gokusen 3 has aki hoshino XD XD XD

@YOLCHEN
hmmm... i saw your list in your livejournal.
I'm quite new in this dorama world, so i haven't watch many of them yet.
How about
beautiful life? [have you watch it yet?]
It's kimura takuya and tokiwa takako. it's kinda like 1 litre of tears. [ i dunno which is better, because i haven't watch 1 litre of tears yet]
I think it's really nice. But the plot progression is slow.
I don't want to spoil you the ending. :P

btw, also. Are there any suggestions for serious dorama like hmmm...
Karei Naru Ichizoku?

thanks before.

I've seen quite a few..

I just finished Brother Beat, and I loved it.

Also recommended..
Hana Yori Dango (S. 1-2)
Gokusen (S.1-3..3 currently airing)
GTO (Classic)
Taiyou No Kisetsu (For some reason I find this to be very under rated..but it's really good)
tatta hitotsu no koi (Currently watching, love it)
One Pound Gospel (Currently watching, also love it)
Sapuri
Yukan Club
Stand Up!!
At Home Dad

And I'm sure I'm missing about a billion others I've watched.

I've heard about beautiful life but because it's really sad (although I loved 1 litre of tears; i nearly died of dehydration watching it xD) I didn't bring myself to watch it yet..

Serious Dorama?
I haven't watched Karei Naru Ichizoku, but more serious Doramas I've seen and that I found great were:

-Ikebukuro Westgate Park
-Yasashii Jikan (It's very slow and peaceful but it really touched my heart)
-LIFE (although it revolves about highschool-life and bullying.. it's thrilling and I loved it a lot)
-Cheap Love (this one is really sad though!)

and.. well.. everyone has seen it, I guess... And maybe it has this "teenage-girl"-image because its starring Yamapi.. buut I found it exciting and I thought that the actors were quite well too:
-Kurosagi

there are some detective mystery genre of dramas such as Tantei Gakuen Q and Detective Conan live action.
or else, you can also try Liar Game or Trick, eventhough they are not based on detectives..
hope it helps.. :-)

Galileo for a slightly more serious tone and Tantei Gakuen Q for a lighter one. ^^

And people who haven't watch Last Friends should start watching. Heheh.

my five top jdramas:
-nodame cantabile
-orange days
-my boss my hero
-1 liter of tears
-hana yori dango 1&2

others I liked, but not my top five :lol
-GTO
-gokusen 1&2
-densha otoko
-h2
-hana kimi
-jyoou no kyoushitsu
-karei naru ichizoku
-nobuta wo produce
-Sekai no Chuushin De, Ai wo Sakebu
-summer snow
-wonderful life
-ace wo nerae

sadly there were some I didn't enjoy:
-lunch queen (food looked good, but that was it)
-galileo (seen too many detective type stuff)
-trick (didnt like the mood/atmosphere of the story)

currently i'm downloading taiyou no uta because I loved the movie. I'll download Last Friends once the series finish because I hate waiting for the next episode. So what else would you guys recommend.

I don't know if your question ws just because you couldn't find Last Friends, but I think it's quite useful to know these sides
http://crunchyroll.com
http://aznv.tv
http://veoh.com (veoh player is great!)
http://hoomie.com

very popular series are also splitted and uploaded at youtube ... (GTO for example...)

(I hope linking this pages is okay?)
