It's from an NEC CM... From 2006, I believe. :)
LOL :lol nice way to confuse people... i miss them though... i want some more nodame, but then again im afraid it would ruin the story line if ever they do decide to bring back some nodame final.

Well, he only dares to look at her like that when he knows she's not looking back. That's why we call it 'stealing a glance'. :lol

Anyone here follows the manga or has seen the anime version of Nodame Cantabile? I've been doing that recently, just out of curiousity and to compare with the live-action version. The manga has more details (Nodame's curry! lol) and is quite a fun read. The anime is also pretty entertaining, but I still prefer the live action when it comes to the orchestra scenes and bringing the characters' emotions to life. The orchestra scenes in the live action are much more spine tingling, making you feel like you're right there with them. :thumleft:

As for the portrayal of characters, it's remarkable how closely Juri plays her Nodame like the anime version (with all the Noda-isms like "mukyaa!" "gyaboo" intact, lol). The anime version of Nodame was a bit too childish and whiny though, Juri made the live action Nodame more quirky and less whiny/clingy. I can't find the right words to describe it....but Juri brings forth a quiet integrity and ladylike sophistication to her Nodame, on top of her requisite unpredictable 'hentainess'. :lol I mean, even though she's completely messy and naive, you get the sense that there is a piano genius lurking within her, and she just needs to mature a little to fully bloom. Whereas for the anime version of Nodame, I don't see that latent piano genius within, only a typical 'boy-crazy shoujo manga heroine' type character, albeit slightly crazier than the norm. :D

I guess that's why the live-action version always beats the anime/manga version for me, when it's done right. Actors can give the characters much needed depth and nuances with their facial expressions, and make the manga character from the pages come alive vibrantly. There is just no comparison - it's like asking whether one prefers to have a picture of an apple, or touch and feel a real apple. Duh. :lol

I've tried watching the anime and reading the manga online... But neither can hold my attention.....

The live-action version is so ingrained in my mind that anything else just pales and/or doesn't register.

Juri-chan IS Nodame.

Hiroshi-kun IS Chiaki-senpai.

The live-action version is more "animated" than the anime itself.

I absolutely agree with you. The anime is lack of animation but the main characters' voice actors are perfect match to them. So they really made the live-action into a good "animated" show. :thumright:

Which is why they have to make another live-action drama once the manga is complete! :thumleft: They really hit the jackpot here with the drama - assembling the best cast, fantastic director, great script with lots of comedy and some drama, subtle romance and brilliant music. All these ingredients are still in place for the sequal (except that the location has changed to Paris - budget constraints?). I want to see more character development and growth for Nodame-chan, both personally and musically. Also more progress between Chiaki and Nodame.

Yeah, the production of the drama and SP were top-notch... Nodame is a great example of a drama that gets good ratings because it's well-made, not because it's loaded with idols. :thumright:

What's the name of this classical song?

Post by abitterkiss » Aug 24th, '08, 07:57

It plays at:

Episode 2 - at 39:41 and nearing till the end of the episode. It plays even after Mine's exam, and Chaiki is carrying Nodame, and then Masumi then Mine start walking with them in this nice walkway where there's a fountain behind them.

Episode 4 - at 41:20, right after the S-orchestra is done playing and then the audience starts clapping.

Episode 6 - when they're having their S-orchestra disbanding party.

Its mostly strings then the brass come...

Absolutely! :thumleft: Aside from being a great comedy drama, Nodame Cantabile has helped to make more people interested in classical music, and inspires young people who are studying music to practice harder in order to achieve their dreams. No wonder the classical community embraces this show.

Hrm, i've just finished watching episode 8 and it is apparent to me that Barber's Adagio for strings is not in any of the Nodame OSTs! This is the same for Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Jupiter. I'm guessing this is because the Nodame Orchestra didn't actually perform any of these, but it would be nice if there was a list floating about with all the missing pieces.

Is there going to be a second SP that continues the manga? Sorry for asking a question that has probably been asked hundreds of times.

noisia, have you read the manga?
i don't know if the nodame cantabile SP episodes concluded the manga or not cuz i haven't read them.
us, nodame fans, are all hoping that there's nodame cantabile 2, but we don't know for sure.
but if the SP ended the way the manga ended, then we're out of luck :-(

I've read the first chapter of the manga but found it strange after watching the anime. A manga on orchestras and music doesn't really work for me.

I thought the manga is still ongoing. Sure the live action SP wraps things up, but it doesn't wrap things up that nicely. Actually come to think of it, if there is a nodame cantabile second series, then it won't be out for a long time to come since the manga has to finish the story first.

Ah well, time to rewatch NC.

Yeah the manga is still ongoing..But to think of nodame cantabile 2nd series, it's most probably impossible coz the story behind takes place in Paris and around europe..U cant imagine the MONEY spent if they really do it..so let's just go back n rewatch :lol

The manga is ongoing. (Actually, it is on hiatus because Ninomiya is on pregnancy leave, but we hope it will return in the new year.) That said, I don't think the manga has much further to go: perhaps no more than 10-12 chapters, depending on how many threads she ties up.
Nodame proposed to Chiaki recently. She was serious, but he thought it was a joke, which upset Nodame terribly. However, Chiaki has now realized maybe she wasn't joking. They've been friends with benefits at least since the end of v. 15. (Where the SP ended.) The most recent chapter ended with Chiaki showing up for Nodame's professional debut with the London Symphony, Streseman conducting. Nodame doesn't know yet that Chiaki is there in the audience.
I've read that Ninomiya had planned to finish the manga by the end of the year, but she slowed down (for the pregnancy) starting in June. If she had finished it, I could well imagine another SP to finish it out, filimed on location the way the last SP was filmed.

To give you an idea of where we are, the dorama covered the first 9 vols of manga, the SP covered up to the end of v15. V21 came out at the end of Sep., and there have been roughly a half-dozen monthlies since the end of V21, approximately enough for a v22.

Those of us who crave everything Nodame are getting our fix with the currently-running "Nodame Cantabile Paris Hen" anime. Ep. 5 (of 11) is due out on Thursday. I suspect these 11 eps will bring the anime up to where the SP got to (end of v15), since that is the only real stopping place since the end of the Japan arc. Although it is moving swiftly, so far it is following the manga even more accurately than the SP did.

BTW I don't have any trouble reading a manga about musical performances. (I feel the same way about Nana.) Unless you are into this solely as a fanboy or fangirl of Ueno or Tamaki, the manga story is so much more fleshed out, and the time line makes so much more sense.

But of course, ymmv.

If you are interested in the anime, you can find current raws and fansubs at Tokyo Toshokan

Wow thanks for the info, musotaku...
I've read the manga, only some chapters but still trying to catch up..I find the anime not as lively as the live action, but the manga is great...Will definitely read through all chapters..

They are different foods. I enjoy them both.

One big challenge for the anime is that a classical music performance, especially of an orchestra, contains too much movement to animate properly within the budget of a TV anime series. But I am a huge fan of Kayasumi Ayako, who is the seiyuu for Nodame. I think she nails Nodame's voice every bit as convincingly as does Ueno, although it is a slightly different take.

This scene of Nodame singing and dancing down the street was not in the SP broadcast, but was included on the SP DVD. :)

seeing this thread reminds me of how much i missed watching NC + its SPs. i'm looking forward to how the manga is turning how (and hopefully another SP when it finally finishes). I'm missing the live action so much that i've started to watch the anime too. the anime is quite good too, but i've never had the patience to sit through an entire viewing of the series.

i think i'll try to dig up my NC vids and watch them during my break =)

News from Tokyograph!!

Two "Nodame Cantabile" films planned for 2010
Tue, December 9, 2008 (10:46am EST)

Anime News Network reports that the latest issue of Kodansha's Kiss magazine reveals plans for two live-action "Nodame Cantabile" films. The news follows right on the heels of the announcement that the currently-airing "Nodame Cantabile: Paris" anime series is getting a sequel next fall.

The two movies are continuations of the popular 2006 drama series, which had a two-part special at the start of this year based on the Paris story arc. The story reportedly continues with the Paris chapter.

Juri Ueno and Hiroshi Tamaki will of course reprise their starring roles. The first film has been slated for January 2010, quickly followed by the second in the spring.

This falls in line with my idea that the manga will probably end in mid-late 2009. Given Ninomiya's normal output speed (4 chapters in 3 months), and assuming she resumes work in January, that means there may be as few as 8-10 more chapters. That hardly seems like time for the loose ends to get tied up. Besides the obvious wedding bells, other loose ends seem to be
1. Nodame winning a big competition (probably with Nina-sensei as a judge).
2. Some kind of reconciliation between Chiaki and his father, likely driven by something Nodame does.
3. Right now, Kuroki and Tanya are completely in limbo. Will Ninomiya leave them there?
4. Chiaki and Nodame's debut (probably back in Tokyo).

Nodame still has another full year of Conservatory to finish. There now is some doubt whether she'll pass her 2nd year, since she has taken "medical" leave right at exam time. (She's really off making her professional debut with Streseman.)
I was assuming the manga would continue through to Nodame's graduation, but Ninomiya has a way of thwarting all expectations. I just hope the ending isn't too rushed.

More "Nodame" movie details
Wed, December 10, 2008 (1:03am EST)
A little more information has been revealed about the two "Nodame Cantabile" movies that were recently announced. First of all, Sankei Sports has reported a slightly different schedule for the films. The first one will be released in December 2009, while the second will be released about three months later in the spring. According to distributor Toho, no Japanese film sequel has ever been released so quickly after the first movie.

Producer Hiroki Wakamatsu said that it would have been impossible to fit the story into a single two-hour film, so it was decided that there would be two movies. Another producer, Kuga Maeda, expressed his confidence in the project, saying, "When you see Part I, you'll surely want to see Part II right away."

Filming is scheduled to start next May and last for a total of five months, including a long period in Europe. In order to not disappoint fans of classical music, the producers have requested a famous orchestra to perform at a well-known concert hall for the movie.

As reported earlier, the movies continue the story from the two-part drama special in January, following the musical progress of Nodame (Juri Ueno) and Chiaki (Hiroshi Tamaki). As for the romance between the two, Wakamatsu did not divulge any information, simply saying that he does not yet know the details.
