Please keep using x264 over x265

Post by koshonin » Sep 24th, '16, 08:14

As I see furransu starting using x265 in his recent encodings, I would like to plead to all encoders to keep using x264 at least for the time being.
even tho x265 might be superior to x264 in quality/size, there are only a few devices that can actually playback them.
None of my devices (dvd-player) can handle them and there is no way to update short of buying a new one. I'm sure I'm not alone.
so please consider the drama fans who can't affort to.

Difficult to play with VLC, also doesn't work in Aegisub, I'd rather spend my time subbing than troubleshooting new software. So please stay with x264.

Thank you for pointing out that it doesn't work with Aegisub. Had x265 worked with Aegisub I wouldn't mind, but since it doesn't I'd prefer you stay with x264, even though the file size is a bit bigger.

x265 support in Aegisub is probably dependent on the ffmpeg version it uses, my version of Aegisub (3.2.2 on Linux) can load x265 files.

Using Aegisub v.2.1.8. I use an older version because it's easier for me to see things, compared to latest version(s). I prefer having the time for the audio located in the middle of the screen, instead of closer to the top. Being nearsighted I find it being the better choice where I'll strain my neck the least. Sorry for the long rant, I just want to explain why I use it. If I need to I'll time after another version.

Using Media Player Classic (Nightly, 64-bit) v.1.7.8 (installed with K-Lite Codec Pack 11,5 Full Version). Also have DirectVobSub v.2.41.

You could always make a quick re-encode to h264 to make the subtitles on Avisynth.
On topic, I also wish people would keep using h264 for a little longer. I have a shitty notebook that can't handle high res h265 decoding.

I'm on 3.2.2 on Win 7 and I am able to load a x265 file as well...I have no idea which version of FFmpeg I have.

x265 - smaller files and better quality
x264 - larger files and poorer quality

x265 is compatible with Aegisub 3.2.2

I can encode in x264 again for future episodes if this will help subbers, but I will not re-encode existing episodes that have been uploaded.

Thank you, furransu, for considering using x264 again. I have no problem viewing x265 files on my computer but my WDTV media player that streams to my large screen TV cannot handle x265 files. I have been using a conversion program to re-encode to x264 and I find that the files generated are roughly 3x larger. I hope that x265 will become an industry standard in the future but, for me, x264 is more convenient right now.

Thanks again for all your efforts in making jdrama available to us.

thank you so very much.
you are always on the forefront of codecs, you were with 10bit too, so I very much appeciate you taking a step back to accomodate the needs of the greater community.
