Swedish news "Rapport" just had a segment about the filming of upcoming taiga drama Idaten.

Summary of what was said
That the story of the Japanese marathon runner Kanakuri Shiso who "went missing" during the Olympic Games 1912 in Stockholm will become a drama series. He didn't register that he canceled the marathon (probably due to the heat), there he was considered "missing."

Short interview with director Inoue Tsuyoshi and main actor Nakamura Kankuro.

Nakamura Kankuro was asked how well known Kanakuri Shiso is in Japan.
He answered that he's 36 years old, but he don't think that many people younger than him knows of Kankuro, except those who are into the sport.

What wasn't said
They didn't say specifically that it was Idaten, or that it will air on NHK, but I could figure it out by the rest of what was said. Big budget historical drama that will air for one year on a Japanese channel equal to SVT (state run TV network) = NHK.

Yes, film crew is in Stockholm. I'm not very familiar with the city myself, I live way up north myself. But I've been there a couple of times.

Story is intersting enough and writer is Kudo Kankuro.
But I have doubts about future taiga anyway.
Not sure if will be fit for the taiga format.
I would be good movie, or SP, or may be shorter dorama.
But 50 episodes... Okay, even 25 for both characters seems too long for me.

Yeah, a special or regular drama would be enough.
And too modern for a taiga drama.

Even with the declining quality of taiga dramas, I'd like to remain optimistic about Idaten. Kudo Kankuro is a master at bringing cohesion in storytelling. There's got to be enough material for him to work with and stretch because of recorded history and footage. Perhaps introduce other athletes or individuals who were notable at the time. I'm also looking forward to the rakugo

Btw it's not the first time taiga drama is set in modern, post-war period-- there were "Sangya Moyu" (1984) and "Inochi" (1986) that I wish I could watch today.

I'm not watching the drama, but I'm curious… is it *that* bad? The ratings seem to be a disaster (lower than 6% now) for a Taiga drama. Can't be all related to this one actor's drug problem?

I highly doubt that *that* is the only reason. Inasmuch as it pains me to say this, Taiga drama ratings have been in steady decline for years now. Some problems cited are: poor scriptwriting/'dumbing down' the historical aspect of the story; lower production values; casting popular albeit inexperienced 'idols' in lead roles vs. seasoned actors; etc.

I would also add that entertainment options are varied and more accessible now than before. We can watch on different media platforms, on mobile devices, through on-demand streaming, or download for offline viewing, etc. Gone are the days when families gathered around the television set on a Sunday night to watch the next episode of their beloved Taiga drama, on the same day at the same time.
