my ethnic background is Chinese. i've always acknowledged that. but i do consider myself Cambodian because i was partially raised with a bit of the culture. thus, i explain to people that i am both Chinese and Cambodian, and a Thai national by birth.

yeah, it might be difficult to explain, or even understand... but that's exactly how i identify myself. =)

I love it how we are mixed. I don't noe any pure cambodian people only mixed ones.

Well, In the summer I went to Cambodia to visit my family members there. I could barely speak Khmer to them because I have that American accent. When I spoke to them, they said I speak khmer "undun undun" meaning like I speak fragmented khmer. Luckily they were my relatives. If it was a stranger....ooooooo they would have made fun of me or rip me off on things they were selling. Of course I didn't get ripped off. I had my cousin with to bargin and speak on my behave. I will be going again this winter.

I don't know any full cambodians either. My dad is cambodian and my mom is chinese and vietnamese. I consider myself all three because my dad will always teach me about the culture and how we should never forget about our culture no matter if your mix or your learning a different languages. For me, I don't know many khmer people in real life O_o I need to go out more and start hunting for khmer people :lol

IKhmeng Srey, 'm not sure where this is going...what's your point for posting this anyway? Are you angry about some donut shop or something because I love donuts, but I'm still a Cambodian :D And the comments you wrote beyond 16 sound like you have a grudge for someone...I don't think it's fair to generalize every Khmer that way just because you momentarily dislike that someone.

Oh yea, I used to watch thai and chinese dramas when I was younger, but man, they got boring after a while. With most of the Thai dramas that I remember, it was about a rich guy who falls in love with a poor girl. With chinese dramas, well, they're flying all over the place, hehe. I think it got repetative for my parents and siblings that they don't watch it as much as they used to long time ago.

I'm usually watching korean and japanese dramas. After watching so much anime and dramas, I could stand watching raws if I know it will not be subbed for a while. For example, I'm watching the Hana Yori Dango EP1 raw that was released today!!! :)

I speak half english and khmer with my parents. And, I do the same to parents' friends, they just make fun of me. My mom is planning to have the whole family, 5 total, visit Cambodia next summer. My dad's cousin is a police officer in Phnom Penh, so he'll protect us with his little gun, lol. Oh yea, you know what's really scary for me when going there! Girls trying to arrange marriages with me, ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! They still try to do that stuff even though I'm over here and never been there! I don't wanna get married yet! So, yea, it will be my first time visiting the country.

I was born in Thailand in the refuge camp, and came to the US when I was about 3 months old, so that explains why I can't speak Khmer good. Just watch, my relatives in Cambodia will make fun of me so badddd.

Plenty enough of true and mixed cambodians in my area. I don't really hang with cambodians in my area, mostly vietnamese and spanish, because there's way too many vietnameses in my area. I guess I look too much like them or something.

Wait a min, I'm talking waaaaaaaay too much, back to the dramas!

if any of u have a chance to go to Cambo, do it!!! it's fun, just don't stay too long, u'd miss fast food and fast cars. if u've been there, then u know that cars move very slow in the city, mopeds everywhere! i was all over the place. 1 of the few places I didn't get to in Cambo was KohKong. but I had a chance to go to Siem Reap and see Angkor Wat and most of the smaller Wats there. it's cool. but in Angkor Wat and some other places, they'd charge u $20/US if u don't speak Cambo. so if u don't look Cambo but speak Cambo, it's cool, but if u look Cambo but don't speak, just stay quiet and let ur relatives speak until u pass those guys or u'll have to pay $20! :D I also had a chance to ride a boat from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, that was cool. it cost $17 when I was there in 2002, it might've gone up. it took around 5 hours, but they give u a meal, it was a decent meal. lots of foreigners take the boat, the locals can't really afford that kind of luxury.

if you guys have the opportunity to travel, do it! life's all about adventures here and there. just don't drink the water unless it's bottled. u can just drink those fresh coconuts. don't eat fresh veggies and stay away from the ice. most fruits r ok to eat, and the fruits r yummmmmmmmy!!! I love the mangosteens, lychees, rambutans, and some others. I wish we had those fruits here. if u want to spend most of ur vacation time in the toilet, then eat the veggies and get the ice. :lol in some restaurants, it's ok to drink their water since they tend to cater towards tourists, but I still drank bottled water. better safe than be on the toilet all day. in Phnom Penh there's a mall called Soriya, it's interesting to check out a Cambo mall.

Yea I used to watch thai dramas with my parents too but the story never really changes. Don't you notice how like 50% of the time the main chic character would get raped by the main guy character and yet they would still fall in love. The thing is the main leads almost always fell in love. There's maybe like one or two where the leads don't get each other.

I actually got my parents started on korean and jap dramas. My dad goes online now and tells me which one to dl for him and my mom watches with him too, but i dont think she really understands it. my pops explains to her what's going on sometimes.

Beyond #16 you have to know how to speak Cambodian really well to understand what those words mean.

"You think you are the king of gamblers but lose all your money like the other ones.
You gamble with no strategy in the casino like a chick with no head "

that means you play the game Clah Clok. Clah Clok is a game where you bet your money on one of the 6 or 8 symbols on the mat. You never know what symbol the dice will turn out thats why you are likely to loose you money.

"People think you're Paki or Indu
You wonder why all other Asian ethnicities hate you
You are really embarrassed when some white folks ask you serious questions about Buddhism because you don't know anything about it "

People never would think Khmer people are Khmer because they never seen one and so they would assume we are Indonesian. When a white person ask a young Cambodian person about buddhism, they would most likely don't know anything because they have adapted to the American Life style and the Cambodian Kids that go to temples are dying out in the US. (Unless their parents are very religious.)

"You think you only have to wear expensive clothes to have class"

In Cambodia, you automatically would know who is rich right away because of their custom made wardrobe they have cut out for special events.

"You try to use every word of the ebonic slang but you look ridiculous"
Meaning trying to speak Cambodian and English in one sentence makes you look and sound ridculous to those who speak Cambodian fluently.

"You call white peole Frenchmen"

You call them that because Cambodia was once colonized by the French (which their skin color was white).

"Your favorite past time is talking behind the back of people even your own family"

Most Cambodians like to do that. Don't know why, but it mostly true because when I when to Cambodia thats what they did everywhere I went.

"You think Buddha is sort a god that can make you win money at the lottery or casino"

You know how people say if you rub buddha's tummy, you will get good luck.

"If you are proud to be a Cambodian, then you have to know how to eat Prahok and Somlo Machua Kruong...And you have to know how to drink Turk Thnok Chua and eat Sach Ko Ank..."

Prahok is a type of food that smells, but good. It is like a paste that you eat with veggies. Somlo Machua Kruong is a soup filled with a type of meat, it can be chicken, beef or pork. It also contains different types of leaves veggies. Sach Ko Anh is beef on stick. I don't know what Turk Thnok Chua is.

I guess you really don't know if your are Cambodian then because most Cambodians in America owns a Donut shop. My uncle owns 3, my aunt owns 1, my moms friends each has 1. I agree it doesnt generalize all cambodians because I don't agree with some of them.

I got this from a friend of mine and they probably got it from some where else like www.khmerconnection.com

I will be going to Cambodia in January of 2006. yey!!!!!

Anyways, if any of you guys do go:

1. Guys make sure to check you always have your wallet in you pocket or else they'll pick pocket. Girls wear a purse that straps your shoulder to the other side. Like a messenger bag. Always have the purse in front of you or else they will pick pocket your purse without you knowing it behind your back.

2. Don't eat too much fruits because you will get diarrhea.

3. Don't have a drink with ice or eat ice there because they spray some kind of chemical that makes the ice not melt, which the chemical will cause you to have diarrhea for one week or two.

Anymore tips?

Beyond #16 you have to know how to speak Cambodian really well to understand what those words mean.
:| Honestly I'm not too fluent in khmer. I guess being born and raise in america my parents only gamble at the casino and I'm not sure what clah clok is :lol Oh well. :|

I'm afraid to even ask this question?

How many of you guys have parents, family, or relatives who own a donut/coffee shop?
I don't get why we see donuts as a good business?

My mom is going to sell our donut/coffee shop but I think she'll buy another one :w00t:
Can you believe it, my brothers are over 21 and they still freakin working at the shop!!!

I rebelled and quit awhile ago cuz I got a REAL JOB :lol
But my brothers still work there on the weekends.

The other thing that pisses me off is that my mom keeps bringing people from cambodia over here, legally of course and we have to take care of them, I swear the only reason why she brings them over is to work at the donut/coffee shop!

The thing is the main leads almost always fell in love. There's maybe like one or two where the leads don't get each other.
Oh yea, I noticed that too. I remember a few rape scenes where I would think they died from it, of course I too young to know any better what the heck is going on.

Well, my parents used to make me download mp3s from a cambodian radio station so they could listen, but then they got bored of hearing the nonsense.

My parents mostly watch those cambodian music dvds now. I haven't tried to get them into any dramas because I know for sure they won't understand a thing, plus they don't know how to use a computer.

I didn't know that this was a big thing for cambodians in Cali until I saw kahmeng_srey's post about the typical stereotypes of cambodians.

Yea, my mom said my relatives have donut shops and gas stations in Cali. Over here in VA, I know one friend who works at her mom's drycleaner.

Dunno, if they have a roof over their heads and want more free time to do some crazy stuff everyday (bum), enough money in their pockets, what's gonna make them change?

Hey everyone! I'm Khmer too. I live in Lynn, Mass. I speak a little bit of Khmer. The only people I speak Khmer to is my parents.

I went to Cambodia when I was only 12. It was really fun there. I didn't live in the city, but rather in a village. Everyone there is really nice. They really work hard. Every single day there was a place to visit. I remember going to that big market place I don't remember what the name was called. I've always wanted to visit Angkor Wat but my parents never did. Right now, my parents are in Cambodia. Seems my grandpa is sick. I hope they are ok.

It's funny you should bring up the donut shop. My uncle and aunt owns one down in Florida. Nowadays, you see Khmer people owning laundromats, pearl drink stores, hair salons, and nail salons. Well, at least in my area.

I wonder if there's a Khmer Town anywhere in the United States.

I feel out of place cuz when I was growing up I was like the only Asian in the class or maybe a few of us in the entire school.

I would always hang out with white, black, and latin kids.
I don't know...I guess I was used to it and I felt more comfortable around them.

Even in High School and College, it felt weird even talking to asians.
Seems like most if not all the asians would only just hang out with asians, I didn't like that.

in jr/high school, I didn't specifically look for Asians to hang out with, it just turned out that way since they were in my classes! I'm in Stockton, so there's a lot of Asians (Cambo, Thai, Laos, Chinese, Hmong, Viet, and others) here. I had some non-asian friends also, but mostly hung around the asians. in college, I hung out with mostly asians also but had had some cool non-asian friends as well.

during Cambo New Year, lots of Cambos flock to the temples in Stockton and Lodi. lots of food and people celebrating.

Hye Guys!

Post by kahmeng_srey » Jan 17th, '06, 18:56

I just came back from Cambodia on the January 14, 2006. I went for two weeks. It was quite fun. My mom and I were able to find some more of my relatives. I went to Siemp Reap to see Angkor Wat and this one hill top which had a ruin temple there (I forgot what it was called). It took me 15 mintues to climb that hill. Oh so tiring!!!!! The reason I climb that hill and other tourists too was that so we can see the golden sun set. I also went to Kabong Som (thats where the beach is). It was fun but the water was warm and fishes were swimming around biting ppl's legs. :lol I only got to stay there for one day so nothing much to say about that place. heheheh
I spent most of my time in Phnom Penh because thats where I was staying. So I often went to Pasha Thmey alot to buy stuff and eat my breakfast there. Everything is so cheap in Cambodia. $1 = $4,000 khmer riels

It's pretty interesting when people find out I'm mixed because my skin is pretty white, haha. Anyways, I'm surprised there are so many people here who aren't pure khmer, because all the cambodians i know aren't mixed 8)

Speaking of Khmer New Year, I wonder how do khmer people in Cambodia celebrate it?

It is any different than in the United States?

and also how do they come up with the date?
When to celebrate Khmer New Year?

I always wondered that since it makes sense why Americans celebrate their New Year in the beginning of the year.
