@ pokute.... I've been trying to look up on this and have come across many mentions of the Oppo dv971H apparently it's suppose to be the best out there rite now? have you tried that one?
Now comes the pricing part.....this will answer azndgn26
The pioneer that pokute mentioned is $168 on amazon .....and the oppo is about $199 but then there's the philips 5100 that's about $70 ........ well how do i choose ....what's the difference? Is it really worth it to buy something that's more than double the price but does what i want?
Why would you say the pioneer is the best? what problem did you have with the others that you've tried?? pls enlighten me .....

The thing about ALL these players is that they have a tendency to either "stall" (all except the Philips), or to have strikingly poor picture quality (the Philips). The Pioneer is the least likely to stall, though it will still do it. The stalling is entirely random and unrelated to peak bitrate, disc layer change, or chaptering. The Pioneer has the same Faroujda as the Oppo, and has additional features that are rather nice, like on-the-fly menu generation for menuless dvd's and divx/xvid discs. If you do not have a high-end display then you may as well buy a Philips dvp642 or Toshiba 9880, either of which can be bought for about $50. The Pioneer has the best documentation and the most intuitive remote and menus as well.

Thanx a bunch Pokute and topnotch97
@pokute now that says alot " high end display" hehe
As for the difference, besides everything that you've just mention i've just learnt today that the resolution is very poor on the cheap players..... So it's true......you pay for what you get!!!But then again if you have a small screen t.v, you'll be fine.
I'll definately pay more if it comes down to it!!! I'll be picking one up- $149 at future shop!(pretty good pice actually)
Once again your help was greatly appreciated!!!

The Pioneer and Oppo have Faroudja, which really makes a difference in the picture quality (again, assuming your display is up to the task)... When I plugged the Pioneer into my new LG LCD I was flabbergasted, I always thought that the color bleed-through in subs was due to the encoding, but the subs are nice and clean all the time with the Pioneer.
Something interesting I have noticed... DVD's that I encoded and then authored using the latest alpha version of dvdauthor do not stall. Commercial dvd's stall, and dvd's authored with the release version of dvdauthor stall. This is really interesting. Apparently there is a "dark corner" in the dvd spec regarding chapterization that causes random failures with the video processor chips used in all the divx players. I suspect that it has something to do with the reduced error-tolerance necessary with these players - there are some bits in mpeg4 streams that are more "important" than any of the bits in mpeg2 streams, so the player can't just walk over certain errors, and treats mpeg2 and mpeg4 streams the same in this regard.

if you are not in a hurry, just wait till toward the end of the year for the sales... I remember one year some dude picked up like 20dvd players from wal-mart for dirt cheap.
I have the Philips at home... it runs fine every now and then but you do the the stall.
Perhaps a Windows Media Center desktop system is the way to go in the future.

IODATA Avel Linkplayer2
I have a fully integrated home network system, so I bought IODATA's Avel Linkplayer, which supports .srt files. It's a fully integrated network DVD player. I play DivX files directly from my computer, connected to the player via ethernet. Since it decodes DiVX directly on the DVD player, it barely uses any of your puter's bandwidth (meaning you can play games, burn DVDs, etc while watching DivX movies on your plasma TV).
I link it to an HD upconverter, which outputs to my wall mounted plasma, but that's another story.

P.S. It's also great for parties, as I can play my full MP3 collection from puter. The default screensaver looks really cool on my plasma, and is a great effect when people are partyin / dancin.

I'm technologically challenged...so if I say something wrong, please be gentle....^_^
I have a Toshiba DVD player to watch AVI dramas on TV. I usually burn 6 (700) files on a DVD-R, using Nero. For the most part, I was able to watch all eps. But sometimes, I'm able to see only three eps on the menu. Don't know what happens to the rest because I see those missing files from my computer. Also, sometimes the sound on one or two eps don't work either. For some DVD-Rs, I didn't burn all 6 files at the same time... I sometimes burn a couple at a time, then add more later. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

As you stated yourself in the future better burn a whole dvd at once. For your audioproblem, most likely your player doesn't support the audio format. Check with the program gspot and check the files you have problems with and the ones you don't have and compare the audiostreams. I think most likely it's a variable bitrate issue. As 99% of the files shared here uses mp3 as the audiosource. And check the manual of your dvdplayer and if your player has a firmware update. Sometimes it can solve the problem. If it gets worse you can always return to the default settings.
I use a playstation 2 to watch my avi files
u need sms 2 player cd to be able to do this... get it here -> http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/index.htm
1) burn the SMS program onto cd
2) pop in the SMS cd into your ps2
3) at the sms2 menu screen, eject the SMS cd and pop in your burnt avi files on a cd or dvd
4) play the movie
it supports playback of divx/xvid/mp3 at 32-bit color depth at full resolution.. so playback quality is very good... no slowdowns at all
some additional functions like pan, zooming, ac3 surround support and multilanguage support
subtitle is possible but only limited to .srt and .sub files (no .ssa support)
you can also plug in a portable usb harddrive containing your avi files into your ps2 usb port and access the movie files from there, or alternatively get a ps2 network adapter and access the files from another computer
you don't need a modified ps2 to run this program...a second-hand ps2 now costs around $100 or less
