Alone In Love (SBS, 2006) with Son Yeh Jin

Post by Ssang » Apr 11th, '06, 06:21

Anyone watching this? So far very good. As long as you forget it's a Kdrama and try to slough off the teenagerism, it's easy to warm up to this show about two divorcees played by Son Yeh Jin and Gam Woo Seong, a guide at a fitness center and a manager at a bookstore, respectively, meddling in each other's lives with some humorous effects. This is more a drama for 30 yos, but it's good regardless if you're looking for a good series.

Official Homepage
SBS 16 episode drama, aka Yeon ae Shi dae, Age of Romance.

Airdates: Currently broadcasting every Monday and Tuesday, beginning from April 3, 2006

PD: Han Ji Seung
Cast: Son Yeh Jin, Gam Woo Seong (Marriage is a Crazy Thing; The King and the Clown), Oh Yun Ah, Lee Jin Wook, Gong Hyeong Jin

Summary from Twitch
Dating, loving, marrying... and breaking up. Seems like 3/4 of the Korean TV Drama pie is taken by those activities, yet what happens after that is rarely the focus. Because people can have relationships even after divorcing, breaking up, or simply parting ways for any other reason. Sometimes there's very little glamour in those situations, as once you take off the burden certain 'attachments' had on a failed relationship, then getting along once again can be even easier. It happens in real life, obviously, but seldom on TV, because it might bore the viewers -- or so they say. Friendship, mutual understanding, that air of pleasant familiarity only someone who lived with you can have... it's like starting from the beginning once again. And although now you're 'alone', you might still be in love. What that love is, if it's friendship, newfound attraction, or something entirely different, we can't possibly know. Adapted from a novel by the late, award-winning writer Nozawa Hisashi, SBS' upcoming 16 Episode Drama 연애시대 (Alone in Love) promises to fill that void, and finally show there's life after breaking up. <...>

Alone In Love is definitely not model-on-the-catwalk, eyecandy type of drama, even though I think Son Yeh Jin is cute. The sooner I understood this, the quicker I was able to get into the show. It's more about dialogue and acting. SYJ's character does some self narration in it, the music is nice too.

Alone In Love has been advertised as a serious melodrama or at least that was the impression I had of it from some promo posters, but it's actually funny and light hearted. I get a friendly pajammas-and-socks sort of feel from it, even though the main characters are divorcees, working people, dating people, singles, and parents, as well as best friends or sisters.

This drama has potential to be very nice, but I don't want to speak too soon. Also, I really like Gam Woo Seong and that bestfriend of his in the show (Gong Hyeong Jin). Very good actors.

son yeh jin is actually drop dead gorgeous - she had to portray an older, mature look in this series. yet, she still looks good even with the older lookr. but nevermind the appearances, what's more important is her acting, which is excellent.

this series focuses less on testosterone/estrogen-driven romance like the other series, but more on character development and their internal conflicts. if you are looking for something other than starry-eyed teenage romance series, this is a good place to start. hopefully the series will end as good as it begins.

what i like about this drama so far is the emphasis on thought rather than speech. some of the funnier/more memorable scenes happen when the characters were NOT talking.

I started watchin this one cuz i really like the main actress in it. I got hooked immediately cuz this was diff from those other dramas where it has that hot lookin guy with a cute lookin girl with a whole teenage attractin stuff in it. THAT is gettin borin and annoyin. But this drama is so much more different. The thematic material is not suited for a simple teenage girl/guy. Most of my friends found it boring after two episodes probably due to the lack of a "hot guy" in it. This drama also has comedy but maybe a bit more subtle and dark in a way.

hahaha that's sooo true! i find myself laughing out laud during their thoughts sometimes hehe and that Doctor friend n Sister add to the show ^^

who said this drama didn't have hot guys?? I find that dude who loves the main actress sooooooooooo handsome! too bad I'm kinda hating his character

but seriously, this drama is worth watching...unless the only reason u watch dramas is the extremly hot leads, typical "Boy met girl, girl loved guy,guy finally realized he loved Girl by the end,and they lived happily ever after" lol
I guess you could say that this drama takes you to the "Ever after" phase umm...no since they're divorced it would be AFTER the EVER AFTER lol

the more i watch this, the more i realize that these actors are very talented. instead of allowing their looks to do the acting, the actors internalized their roles really well. the result is a convincing story of divorce and its subsequent redemption.

Girls are too much spoiled by good looking Korean actors/ actresses in K-dramas.

Not so good looking people can be leads in dramas, don't you think?

Sometimes you got to see their acting not just faces..

I just watched the first four episodes and I'm desperately wanting more subs. This is uncommon for me since I am usually overly patient, to the point of waiting weeks if not months to continue a series hehe. While I'm not going to say I don't like the teenage dramas, I really like the different pace and themes of this series. Of course being in the target demographic age-wise doesn't hurt either... :P

[edit]
I forgot to say that so far Dong Jin's path seems to be more interesting. I'm not sure if this is intended or not since I have only seen up to episode 4. Someone mentioned that Eun Ho's suitor seems to lack depth, and I would agree (again with the caveat mentioned before). Though I may just be biased because of the adorable little girl. ; )

everyone in this series tries to look average. they have unflattering jobs and live in modest dwellings.

do you see them as heirs of CEOs or heads of state? no. do you see them living in palatial homes? no.

instead, they lead ordinary lives - you watch them get up and go to work everyday. the main actress gets to work on a bicycle, not a mercedes benz s600 surrounded by bodyguards. the lead actor takes a bus to his bookstore. ho-hum.

the ironic thing is that being average is what makes this drama excellent.

Actually there IS a heir of a CEO...

But I agree with how ordinary and real the characters' lives and their situations feel. That's what makes it so special. I can't wait to see the rest of the series. Hopefully, the quality remains as high as the first 5. If it does, I'll definitely get the DVDs when it comes out.

Great, great, great show... What a change! No hateful ex-girlfriends or rivals stabbing everyone in the back, no contrived plotlines, light/funny and deep/touching at the same time...
This drama does have Son Ye Jin (and those who have seen Spider Forest or Marriage Is A Crazy Thing know that Gam Woo Jung is one of the best Korean actors around), but I didn't expect it to be as good as this. Son Ye Jin impresses me more and more with every new role. She shows a lot of maturity here and she's entirely convincing playing an older woman than herself - where it's usually the other way round (don't you love hollywood movies with 30-year-olds playing high school kids?).

Eun-ho's stalker IS annoying, but that's really my only qualm with the show (and anyway, he doesn't have much screentime). I thought her friend (who's after Dong-Jin) would be annoying, but the writer made a great job of creating a likeable character that you can really get attached to. She's not just the-woman-who-tries-to-get-between-the-destined-lovers that you only wish to see disappear. I find myself hoping that the story ends well for her, every bit as much as I do for Eun-Ho and Dong-Jin.

As for Dr. Gong and Eun-ho's sister, I'm seriously thinking of starting a fan club... They are just awesome... And that phone call at the end of ep.6!!! (won't go into details for those who haven't seen it)

I couldn't agree more... Natural, dainty yet strong, elegant, nice voice (a crucial factor to me). I guess the fact that she's close to my age also makes her a lot more attractive than younger Barbie dolls.
Hmmm, feel like watching April Snow again tonight...

Eun-ho's stalker? Sounds about right hehe. He's the only character that lacks depth so far(ep 6). Eun-ho's sister is starting to grow on me. The development of Eun-ho's friend's story was done very well. And the little girl...more adorable... ; )

yeah the little girl is sooo adorable!! u should see her in Great Inharitance XD she's one of the main characters (the kg students) she has much more lines that she does in Alone in love XD!
I think the Dr and sister should be together, hehe they seem to get along so well..but since this drama is not so typical,I don't think they'd end up 2gether :whistling:

I knew I should have downloaded Great Inheritance. Knowing that little girl is in there has convinced me to get it soon, when I have free bandwidth hehe.
I completely forgot about the doctor. Poor guy, suffering from guilt and left traumatized all those years. Him and Eon-ho's sister... opposites attract? :P

Just saw episode 7... I'm saving 8 for tonight. It really gets better and better. I'm really curious as to what is going to happen in the next episodes, though, since... [spoilers ahead]
...episode 7 cuts several threads: Eun-ho and Dong-Jin both break up, Eun-ho's friend even moves out... Well, this being KDrama, we all know nothing is ever over and both rejected lovers may pop up again. All I'm hoping for is that if and when they do, it won't be for some hackneyed filler plot diversion - but considering the quality of this drama, I'm sure it won't.

[End of spoilers]
I'm waiting to know more about Eun-ho's father: he's obviously going to be a very important character. And how about the professor scared of water? He's definitely attracted to Eun-ho. Another nice and original character, by the way.
The flashbacks from Eun-ho and Dong-jin's past are very well done - much better than in most TV shows (Asian or non). They always blend in nicely with whatever is going on, and usually find a strong echo in the current events. Episode 7 was excellent in that regard (I'm thinking of the scene where Dong-jin is fishing and he reminisces briefly).

Damn...
Knocked the wind out of me...
Sucker punched me...
Cold cocked me...
I need to go run it off... and it's late... and raining... Rain + night chill + running = cold.
Apparently, I'm going to be ill because of episode 8.

This is my current favo kdrama series which is airing, the main and the support actresses (sister) are pretty hot imo and its very different from the other kdramas which makes this one a real winner, its also rated quite high.

Currently watching: Bad Family, Alone In Love, Spring Waltz, What Planet Are You From?,

Same here... Ji Ho is great, especially her deadpan delivery of lines that are usually fraught with emotion and violins.
Sample dialogue:
- I love you.
- What?!
- Yeah, I love you, no big deal. Wanna make out?
Gotta love her style...

(and Dong-jin's "Don't drag the turbulent sea into this" line in episode 8... LMAO :tv: )

On an entirely different subject, the show also does a very good job of explaining why they do not get back together even though they obviously still have feelings for each other. Their unresolved issues are presented in a very subtle way, without needlessly hefty and explanatory dialogue. Dong-jin's silence in the "car scene" of episode 8 was pretty strong. Not sure many actors could pull off such a scene as well as SYJ and GWS did.

yeah, i just read soompi is down for 4 days...
anyways, i like how the 4 characters play their parts... at first i thought SYJ opposite GWS wouldnt mesh together but after watching episode 1, they made justice to their respective characters... JiHo and Joon Pyo are good in the supporting part but you still could see them as main chars, well if not for them espcially Ji Ho the drama wouldnt have a diffrent perspective and would drag to boring...

Please please please, I know you guys won't write any unhidden spoilers, but be extra careful in the way you say even the most neutral things. The tone can give away as much as words. So please, when you see the final episodes next week, think about us who have to wait for the subtitles before you post things that might lead us to find out beforehand (or that might simply hint at) what happens in the end... Thaaaaaaaaanks! :thumleft:

Thanks, skachild. Are these ratings good/average/bad? I usually don't pay much attention to the ratings so I don't really know what's considered "good"...

Well, it's not in the top 10, but then I don't see many dramas in there anyway... Funny, the list is practically identical from one week to the next. I guess Korean audiences are pretty loyal to theirs fav shows.

...God I'm dying to have the subs for episode 09... :hissy:
I'm too old for this s**t...

I've had some time to mull over episode 8, but I'm still kind of dumbfounded. Now I know what amaranth meant in his post after watching it hehe. The whole hidden story and flashback sequence is frustrating yet very well done.

Explaining? You mean "alluding to" don't you? :P I'm always caught between saying "That's it?!" and "Wait, I'm missing something" all the time.

thats what im hoping also... well, it would be nice if dong-jin would realize that doing what he is s'pose to do, marry his high school sweety, is just a big mistake since he still love Eun-hoo...

Mi-yoon is the other woman, the one with the kid, and the best friend of Eun-hoo...

He-he... You're probably right, "alluding" is more like it. I do like how the show lets you (or rather requires you to) do the math. I thought those scenes said a lot more than a lengthy explanatory dialogue would have. I don't think anyone needs to be told that what happened to them was pretty hard to deal with. In that sense, this drama reminds me of quite a few movies (like April Snow, also with Son Ye Jin) that don't say much but say a lot if you're careful enough.

Absolutely no problem for me, I didn't read the hidden parts. My post wasn't meant as a complaint, and I'm sorry if it came off like that. It was more of a precautionary post, since the show is drawing to a close. Kind of a "prevention is better than cure" thing... :P So, again, sorry if it sounded like I was bitching...

Yeah, just like the saying Silent Water Runs Deep, the more you listen to what they are thinking, you'll understand the deeper sense of what they are doing...

But here, anyways, they dont say enough that the others misunderstood what they are doing... but still, they are the colors that fill the serenity of the series...

I guess I never got over the fact that a stupid movie magazine printed the face of Keyser Söze from The Usual Suspects, :cussing: spoiling the mystery for everyone who hadn't yet seen the movie (and that included poor little me...). The actor's face was barely blurred and you could tell who it was at a mere glance. I was so angry I cancelled my subscription...! :P
Aaaah, childhood traumas... we never quite get over them...
And that's it for today's psychoanalytical foray.

Till episode 8. I can't understand Korean, so I wait patiently (well, as patiently as possible...) for the subtitles...
Anyhoo, I hope y'all enjoy the ending, you lucky Korean speakers!

hey, i dont speak korean... but im religiously self-studying the language and i only understand bit by bit of what they are saying but still i also watch it with the subs so that i could really understand everything... just cant wait to watch even w/o the subs...

anyways, i was kind of like that b4... wholeheartedly waiting for the subs to come, but i got disappointed because it was already shown here in our country, dubbed in our language but still the subs from here isnt finished yet... so now, i watch whats available with or without subs, with babelfish translator open :lol

I see! Oh well, I can't bring myself to watch something that I don't fully understand, so...
If you're studying Korean, buffyreg, I guess it's also useful for you. And no disappointment for me at seeing the drama dubbed on TV while still waiting for the subs, since no asian drama ever made it to Europe.
I should watch Jdorama without subs, I'd probably learn Japanese faster. If only I had the time...

Nope... Nothing, nada, niente, zéro, zilch... The French do love Asian cinema, though. It started as a big, stupid, all-things-Asian-are-great trend a few years ago, but now it's really rooted in people's tastes. So we get a lot of Japanese, Korean and Chinese movies (most of which I've seen and sometimes purchased on DVD before they get here...:roll). But no drama whatsoever.
Having seen April Snow on DVD, I was pretty happy that it finally came out in theatres here, last month.
(and this was a rather clunky attempt at bringing the post somehow back on topic, by mentioning a Son Ye Jin movie... well, I said "somehow")

I agree with you. Can't wait to see more of her in this one and in other drama's. Especially as the lead. How would that be? Just as good?
