We're all over the place, ne?

For me it's only been one generation (Mom was from Norway) so naturally I have a wealth of Norwegian at my command.

I can not only say "Thank you for the food" but I can also say "Merry Christmas" in Norwegian.

For me, I grew up in the U.S. state of Illinois. The area was known as little Norway. We even had a town named Norway and one named Stavanger. Now when I say town, think ten or so houses with one small general store. But it was Blonde hair Blue eyed as far as you could see. Nothin but *son's,(Johnson, Thompson, Severson,.....).

This area was where the first big waves of Norwegian immigrants came to in the 1850's through 1870's. For the first few generations, they held on to the old country pretty tightly, even the church services were still in Norwegian. By my generation, no one I know of my age group can speak more than a word or two. But holidays would still be filled with Norwegian food. :D

BTW, back around 1980 or so, the King of Norway came over to visit the area.
He didn't invite us to come back though

Oh, so that's your story. Our silly old king. XD
Well, I guess you wouldn't want to go back anyway, right? It must be lots cooler living in a huge country like the USA, with people from all kinds of cultures gathering! It's not that Norway's a bad place to live or anything, but it's still... so small.

The "huge" Oslo is just a little city compared to those large ones in many other countries, it's all so small. In the future, I think I want to leave Norway, there's too much in this world to see and experience, one can't just stay here all life!

It's a pity that the families drop Norwegian through their generations. Not that you need it, but being bi/multilingual does give many adventages. And languages are fun; the more you know, the better! :D It's cute how you Norwegian Americans stick to traditions, though. Norwegian food! :D

Sounds like you have the old, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" syndrome. :lol I've lived in enough countries to know they all have good and bad and also to know the US is not perfect. At least Norway hasn't invaded other countries, well at least not for a thousand years or so. :whistling:

I'm in about the last generation or so of true Norwegian/Americans. Myself and most of my age group married non-Norwegians(my first wife was a whole bunch of things and the second was Chinese). So what little remained of the old country will soon be gone.
The same is true for most of the many other groups that came to the US, at first very tight-knit to each other and over the generations merging into the larger melting pot of the US.

Now what makes you think I'm not bi/multilingual, I can speak a little Chinese and Japanese
:P

Sure the US ain't perfect, in fact I used to be really anti USA until quite recently. Don't know why it suddenly changed, but it's a good thing I stopped being so narrow-minded. Still, Norway is such a small and boring country. Our government pumps out thousands of gallons of oil from the North Sea, but refuses to use any of the money they gain from it, and instead increase taxes and such. That's pretty much how it is.

It's a good thing that different ethnics blend in with each other, right? Maybe racism will disappear that way? But before that happens, there might not be any "races" left, haha. Racists are idiots anyway.

I didn't say that you couldn't speak any other languages than English, was just generalizing. I don't think a random American would know Chinese or Japanese. But don't Americans learn some obligatory second language at school? I thought you had to study French that way.

As to the mixing of the races, I agree. Overall it's a wonderful thing and I'm all for it. On the other hand, I can't help but to mourn just a bit as something I knew, my world that I grew up with, passes on. It's not that I think it shouldn't happen, it's a natural occurrence as the changing of the seasons. Without a doubt, any improvement it can make for racism will be welcome. Racism, nationalism, sexism and most any other 'ism you can think of are diseases of the mind that we would be well rid of.

For the US, when it's at it's best, I think it can be a pretty terrific place. But that's my point, I don't think it's at it's best often enough. When you presume to be the leader of the free world, when you presume to impose your values on others, when you consume far more than your share of the worlds natural resources, you should hold yourself to a higher standard. When it sounds like I'm griping about the US it's because I'm frustrated that we're not meeting that standard.

Yes it is true, in many schools students are required to take a language course, usually French or Spanish. But that is a completely different thing from learning a language. Compared to most other countries of the world, we have a very low rate of bi/multilingual ability. I can only speak some Chinese because I spent seven years in east Asia and had a Chinese wife for seventeen years. But even so, my spoken Chinese would bring the average native to tears. My Japanese is even worse and I have that only from watching way too much JDorama and anime. :roll When I lived in Asia, most everyone I met spoke two, three or four languages. I've found that to also be true with many of the Europeans I've known. You're a great example, your written English is excellent. We Americans can't be bothered with such things, we think it would be ever so much more convenient if everyone would just speak like us. :P

I'm still amazed by how the internet connects people with similiar interests. I'm still a little kid, kind of, yet I am able to talk to a grown-up person like you, as if it was as usual as squishing ketchup on your hot dogs. Seriously! If I on a regular basis went to a Linux User Group or something, it could maybe have seemed more natural to me, but there's no such thing that I know of around here. Anyway, these were just some random thoughts, but I do like speaking with people older than me. They tend to know lots of stuff about... stuff. Life; everything and nothing. Hopefully I am able to learn others a thing or two as well!

Oh, and thanks a lot for complimenting my written English! Of course, my oral English is waaay worse, because I then don't have time to consider which words to use and pick out expressions which would fit in the sentence I'm trying to create. I'm sure I'd be a better English speaker if only I spoke more, the only way to advance in language learning is through usage!

Så... Åssen ble dere interesert i asiatisk drama serier?

For meg selv begynte det med anime for noen år siden. Første serien jeg så var nok
Gravitation og Hikaru no Go. Men følger

tar slutt.

Mine favoritter:
Koreansk - Sweet Spy
Japansk - Summer Snow

Country Princess - http://www.henshin-tigers.net/seriesinfo.php?id=39
Summer Snow - http://www.henshin-tigers.net/seriesinfo.php?id=1

Happy Syttende Mai folks.

I hope I spelled that right. It's Happy May 17th, which in my lifetime has been known at Norwegian Independance day... Norwegian Constitution Dan... and lately, simply, Norwegian Day.

I grew up in Brooklyn New York and every May 17th my mom and grandma would make all of us march in the Norwegian Day Parade.

I found some pictures of the 2004 parade on the web at:

http://www.nootrope.net/parade/

No offense to the Norwegians on board, but do you know the kind of grief a kid will take walking around the streets of Brooklyn in one of those outfits?

But your not the only one.

Favoritter:
Nobuta Wo Produce
Hana Yori Dango
Densha Otoko
Gokusen (Sesong 1)

Utrolig goofy. Utrolig bra.

Heia norge :)

Post by olympique » Dec 4th, '06, 03:42

men stilig uansett :P

takk :)

Litt lange, litt my trekant forhold men fremdeles underholdende.

Anyone?

Whuhu! Hail to all Normenn (og kvinner)

Meredeth!

:goggle: Og man må jo se dem!

Meeen! :D
