Seeders needed for CSotM!!! (now includes WSoTM!!!!)

Post by Kai Lien » Oct 12th, '04, 22:14

CSotM = Chinese Series of the Month. It's where we share a series of an older, unseeded drama. For more information, visit this thread. If you have downloaded any dramas from Jem, JTV, or here and would like to contribute back to the community, would you be so kind as to volunteer as a seeder? Click here if you need more information on seeding/re-seeding batches. Please state what version of the series you have. Remember they have to be complete, in english and with at least 3 seeders.

*NEW*
WSotM = Wuxia Series of the Month
TWSotQ = Taiwanese Series of the Quarter

Thanks,

Airen

I have a lot of Chinese Series that aren't subbed. Most of them are VCD-rips that are converted to rmvb. I can chip in if there are demands. I'll probably make a listing of the series that I have and post it up here later.

I see requests, but not many people saying they have xx & can share it...

The thing with Chinese subbed Chinese series/dramas is that there's too darn many. I see like weekly releases of 20+ episode series (between Mainland China, TW, HK, etc., so major fans of cdrama probably rotate to watch the new ones.

I think one thing lacking is a ancient/wuxia drama eng-subbed--these are the most culturally rich and difficult to understand.

I dont know..chinese series is never too active in the bt world. for example, it has the most seed problem at JEM's site, and people tend to run after they finish getting the file.

Hmm...I kinda doubt that this will work w/ the amount of episodes of chinese drama but, let's give it a try.

I have a very small harddrive of..20 gb so most of these stuffs are burn to cds but I don't mind seeding if there ever gonna be a c-sot?

Here's what I could help with:
W/ Eng sub:
Family Man
Herbalist Affairs
Reaching Out
MVP Valentine
Monkey King (mix of jem's and jtv's) *last ep unsubbed
Chess Warriors
Starry Starry Night

-processing on-
Swordsman I & III (coming from snailmail trade in abt 3 weeks or so)

W/O sub:
SnowAngel
Hidden Treasure *not sure if it's the same w/ the one posted here

same here, and hopefully it might inspire someone to actually translate it. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if within a month after it's airing in HK or immediately after it finishes airing in HK it will be released overseas dubbed in other languages.

a portion of the list above, the ones without subs can still be downloaded (rmvb)
and I don't think many people will download the ones without English subs. there are many btsites in English where many Chinese series can be found to download.

I totally agree: chinese dramas are my obsession, but sadly there aren't a lot of English subbed ones, which are a real pity, since the period ones are so different and neat! And a lot of fighting is very realisitic and entertaining as well!

If I had more spare time I'd defintely pick a good ancient Chinese drama and english sub it. It's about time these came out in different languages to share with people...

Tell me about it! I really love the ancient ones except they are quite long and pretty difficult to sub. I swear we need to start a chinese drama subbing group...

...a good idea to solve the seeding problem is to split the series eps into batches and not single episodes. Many (anime group) have been doing this for that reason, it forces people to download the files and share for a longer time than with single episodes. I love the ancient ones too!! Been dying to get the complete step into the past and where the legend begins...:w00t:

Hmm, Jem has also Swordsman and Swordsman 3 (though I haven't been able to get 4-7 of the latter).

And I think it's Witness to a Prosecution 2. :)

... and the final episode of Eternal Happiness is being uploaded today.

Would there be a requirement of english subbed?

Also, when we say chinese drama, are we mixing cantonese and mandarin into the group?

Or just one language?

Unless the english subs are from dvd-rips, you can't just snap your fingers and have english subs appear for cdramas you know. :P

I'm curious: if you guys had to pick an ancient or period drama to sub, what would you pick, keeping in mind the quality of plot, action, characters and overall atmosphere (I'm always for realistic costume and hairstyles)?

Some of my picks would be Huan Zhu Ge Ge/Princess Returning Pearl; Jue Dai Shuang Jiao/Legendary Twins; the Condor Heroes series...ack trying to think of relatively short ones and these aren't...Wo Hu Cang Long/Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (though I haven't yet finished watching so I don't know how great or horrendous the ending is)...I know I've got more but my mind's blanking on me...

I don't think ancient dramas would be any more or less hard to sub; it's the translation that might be tricky...but defintely doable. Time would be my major issue.

OK I know it's not much but since nobody else is posting...

I'd be willing to seed what I've got of A step into the past, which is currently 13 complete episodes, 5.2 GiB. I'm actually doing my best to keep it seeded already. ^_^;
Of course this is because I want to get the drama myself, but also because I think it's a really good one and would like to spread it.

I know it's 40 eps long, but maybe we could have ten episodes per batch... I think batching up JTV's first nine eps would help people since there's always like one, two or three people downloading each ep, which is very inefficient.

But it depends, maybe I'm the only one who likes this one. ^^;
As for other dramas, I tried to download some, but there are no seeds and almost no peers, so I never get anywhere. Right now I have 2.3% of Monkey King ep 1, after several days. :P
Also, while I speak Japanese and am very fond of Japanese culture, I don't speak a word Chinese (any dialect), why I'm usually not that interested in Cdramas. In the case of a step into the past though, I'm with you. :-)

Since the majority of us need english subs it should be a requirement. But if there's like a huge demand for a non-english subbed one, than I guess it could work too. We could all vote and see what should be done.

I think we should mix both cantonese and mandarin for a sotm. It seems like that would work better. However, we should all probably vote on that too. I don't want to be making all the decisions. :P

Great picks! I Love HZGG and Legendary Twins. Never seen croutching tiger though. I would also probably pick The 2003 Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre/ Yi Tian Tu long Ji. I really enjoyed that one. :D I simply adored Gao Yuan Yuan, Jia Jing Wen, and Su You Peng in it. Yeah, I can't think of anymore at the moment either...that was the last ancient drama I watched that I was totally crazy about. :lol

@gaidal - Thanks for your kind gesture. :) A Step into the past is that good, eh? Maybe I should try it out...

Calcifer10000 wrote:I'm curious: if you guys had to pick an ancient or period drama to sub, what would you pick, keeping in mind the quality of plot, action, characters and overall atmosphere (I'm always for realistic costume and hairstyles)?

Calcifer, I still have you for the project right? Just things going on, and my organization--actually lack of organization is leaving me disoriented.

Just a personal opinion, but Qiong Yao's stuff annoy me; her characters are really self-absorbed and... I don't know, just not likeable. If you're talking about the Taiwanese version of Jue Dai Shuang Jiao, it's very pop-idolish. I actually liked it, but as for an good ancient/wuxia drama, I'm not sure about that as it somewhat defeats the purpose of having experiencing an ancient series.

I think ancient dramas would definitely be a LOT more difficult to translate due to the use of archaic language, complicated names and extended characters. I'm particularly thinking of wuxia, when you have names for each move, sects, etc. Sometimes, I'll watch a scene and understand the gist, but have no idea what they said in the dialogue when they stick to traditional ancient language. Some modernize it though so depends on the series.

I'm a fan of State of Divinity... I've seen all the adaptions and enjoyed every one. I think it's interesting, because in terms of the versions made so far, it's probably the most variable production among Jin Yong's stories.

Ok, I'm good for seeding Monkey King 13-24, but 22-24 have no subs. I have 1-12 on
cd-r, but someone would need to tell me how to seed them from that. I'm all about MK, and the other older series, Legend of Condor Heros, Demi gods and Semi devils, and all the other past based series. It's my bf's mom's fault, watching all those chinese dramas dubbed in viet.....I forced my bf to translate and now he regrets it, lol. As for chinese dramas on the web, I personally wish there was a video store with all these different series subbed in english. Unfortunately the stores with asian videos are all just dubbed in the store owners language, there for being useless to me. So.....which ever episodes come about......paaaalllllleeeeeaasssssseeeeee english sub them now, so that I don't bother you guys later about it. Arigatou gozaimasu!!!!!!!!

I thought HZGG was great too althought I didnt understand most of it >_<
HSDS was also good and I loved Tian Long Ba Bu.

I also think we should try to encourage more seeding of English subbed C drama (after all we are spreading the love right?)
There are plenty of other sites/video stores that raw/C subbed Chinese dramas can be easily acquired..

Even tho quite a few series are longish, I think we should still go ahead and have a CSOTW.
It would be a great way to promote chinese dramas IMHO.
I believe we have just as much if not more quality in terms of content and candyness to compete with J & K dramas =P

Lets give it a go!

Cheers =)

For the love of God not HSDS2003. =) Absolutely horrible in my opinion. DGSD2003 is way better. SOD2001 is also good, but LoCH2002, not so much. If you haven't noticed, I'm primarily a Jin Yong freak. =)

I like both, but I think HSDS '03 has a better cast & pace than DGSD '03. However, whoever came up with the idea of Zhou Zhirou's costuming in the later parts of the story should be shot. What the heck was with those nails. But gathering from the cdrama statistics on this site, its popularity pales in comparison to jdramas & kdramas.

Here's what I think:
China productions, usually realistic and intellectual, but with has a lot of talk; it's not popular with younger people.
HK productions, tend to be fairly fast paced and adventurous which I like, but has cheap sets and costumes for the most part.
Taiwanese productions are in between, but they go the most far out in costumes, some look really modernized, seems to me that there's more focus on romance than the other 2.

If anyone really wants to jumpstart subbing a period Chinese drama, I can try to provide dvd or vcd raws if it's commerically available, but probably only during my winter or summer break as I'm already kind of behind in The Rose. I think it'll be a challenge unless you really know your Chinese.

Are you saying I'm an old fogey?

I dunno, I try not to judge it by where the productions are from, but as you say, on a general trend, the Mainland dramas seem to be more authentic, and for the most part, stick closer to the novel characterizations. HK dramas were filled with great actors back in the day, but it seems that the HK penchant for silliness has ruined a lot of costume dramas from there, and also the use of bad CG. Finally, Taiwan costume dramas were always considered the worst, because the acting was usually terrible (usually some idol), the production values were low, and the scripts were all sorts of messed up (thank Yang Pei Pei).

Still, I wish that the Mainland would stick even closer to the storyline, and not use CG (even the limited amount they are using). Problem with TLBB/DGSD is that the storyline is tri-fercated, so you don't stay with a particular main character all the time. But whenever Qiao Feng came up, you got shivers as to his greatness.

I can help with translations for Jin Yong dramas, but they wouldn't be entirely accurate. If someone would time them and edit them, I could push out translations pretty fast.

I sure like chinese drama a lot, but I need english subs for understanding. My wife is vietnamese, but I guess it's very difficult to get the vietnamese subs as well. I don't have any favourite series. Sofar I've downloaded ROTK, WAB and My date with a vampire part 3, but this one has no english subs sofar.
I'll help with the seeding.

Nah, I don't even know how old you are :lol plus I watch them, too. I'm just saying that from what I observe. It depends on what you prefer to watch, too. My mom always falls asleep when watching cdramas so I can't even bug her when I don't understand something, but my dad prefers them.

Fair enough, but I guess I don't mind Yang Pei Pei so much like State of Divinity 2000 & Return of the Condor Heroes 1998... hehe, maybe I like Richie Ren even if he don't fit in the roles that well :P I just see it as "different," since I've never read the novels.

Hmm... want to try giving out some titles that you guys are interested in?

After thinking about it & from reading what people has already named... some options (storyline, originality & entertainment value in mind):
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
[I personally have not watched this yet, b/c by the time this came out, I had watched the movie 10+ times, raw, subtitles, English dub, so I didn't like the idea of a tv adaptation, but all the reviews I've heard has been positive so it must be good, 34 episodes, dvd available].

JY - State of Divinity (any version)
[Maybe biased, but my favorite JY story...]

GL - Legendary Siblings
The Taiwanese version is like a idol drama, but nevertheless fun to watch.

Singapore's White Snake, Green Snake (a lot of traditional legend stuff in here, very original)

I'll sleep on it... for more.

State of Divinity 2001 or DGSD/TLBB 2003 I already have copies of, so I could do those. I can also do LoCH2003. I only know Mandarin, but if you have a Mandarin dub of the older works, I could do that too.. =)

Fellow Jin Yong freak here. Would love to see SOD 2001 or DGSD 2003 translated. Unfortunately I can only understand the vietnamese dubbed version and my vietnamese is pretty poor to begin with :P

For timing though you could probably just use the chinese sub timing off the DVD (assuming there is chinese subs off the DVD, I'll be getting the DGSD DVD set soon so I can confirm that when I get it).

Heh, you should read V for Vendetta. Go check it out next time you're at Borders/B&N.

As for being old, everyone is old compared to iceberri. I mean, crap, you were almost born in the 1990's! :D

the only thing I hate about most Chinese mainland DVDs is you can't turn off the subs--I had hoped I would be able to do it w/ my own DGSD 2003 DVDs, but no such luck, good thing it was in widescreen format.

Isn't it a good thing not being able to turn off the subs? I can read and write some Japanese, and sometimes when I watch Cdramas it feels like I'm somehow learning Chinese subconsciously by hearing the dialogues and seeing the kanji at the same time. ^_^

Anyway, sorry for mentioning A step into the past again, but somebody said something about being able to get DVDs, so I just wanted to remind you that JTV is just waiting for the DVDs for that series to continue their subbing work. :-) (it says so on their site anyway)
But maybe it only applied to other series.

a heads up for those in SoCal, the local station, KSCI-TV ( KSCI-18 ) will begin airing its 1st chinese drama w/ eng subs starting Nov 8 at the 7pm-8pm timeslot. So for those who can capture, this is something that can be shared.

The series is called The Last Empress and stars Li Ya Peng, Shui Ling, and Huang Yi (info on the series: http://ent.sina.com.cn/v/f/mdhf/ )

Interesting, since this is the first, wonder what were the factors that made it possible..

Too bad that I'm in the Midwest though, we practically don't have any Asian channels.

Wang Ya Nan also part of the cast (sizeable role) & it's centered on Shui Ling's role as a concubine..

I couldn't believe it when I saw a commercial for it! I'll capture it to get the english subs. I have the DVDs too. That's probably better quality...hopefully I'll get my dvd burner soon.

Edit: On another note, I am so excited that there are people who want to translate c-dramas! :w00t:

The timing is one tiresome job so best if there is a dvd source, but creidesca raised up a good point... that a lot of Mainland released DVDs have permanent subtitles and there's no way you can tell from the box so I dunno.

I have my little winter break in about 2 weeks, maybe I can look for titles & check them out (i.e. whether permanant or cc)--unless there are enthusiastic timers out there...

Genrou  :lol
Unfortunately that is probably a good idea but I doubt it works that way.
See http://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtop ... c&start=30

In Azureus you can turn off the files you dont want and thereby bypassing the part of seeding files you dont keep on your disk.

As such the "forced" leach prevention fails on its own grip.
At least as far I can understand torrent functions in Azureus 2.1.0.4.

The idea of batch seeding when the number of episodes increases is great though.

I've always wanted to sub a Chinese drama for as long as I've begun to see them. I don't live in the midwest, but I might as well for all the Chinese people I know :|

I did want to say, for the series I've seen, Mainland productions aren't always 'intellectual' and thus boring, although if you mean relatively serious, I agree. There are some real quality HK series from the past which are awesome. The old Condor Heroes and 'Great General' series are two of my absolute favorites. But they're really long... I've seen some decent ones from Taiwan, though modernized ancient costumes and dyed hair in period series annoy the hell out of me. I like what I've seen of the Green Snake White Snake series from Singapore too, though I have yet to finish it. And FYI, Taiwan's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon has a not-so-great ending. It's a real shame, too, because it's almost flawless up to it. Great costumes, acting, good-looking cast (love Shui Ling!), very little CG, good fighting and round characters. And I think it follows the plot of the original novel pretty well, much better than the movie anyway, which I didn't even comprehend. I couldn't even tell why the heck they wanted the sword...hehe. But the ending of the CTHD series is quite lame and I was pretty disappointed. Grrr...!!!

About subbing, although often the Chinese subs are permanently burned into the video files, from experience I've found putting subs up top of the screen is just as good. (I subbed MG with permanent Chinese subs and was forced to put the English up top, and it worked just fine :) )

I'd really hope to sub an ancient series sometime. It's about time they got more attention!

clouds421, you do have me in the Rose project, though no one's contacted me about anything so I don't know what's going on...though I'm in the middle of exams so I might not have much energy at the moment...

hmmm....actually, i have been thinking, and since i am on winter break right now and i have a lot of free time on my hands, and so i am thinking that i might just do a head-start on subbing an episode of a chinese series...doesn't matter if it's chinese or mandarin, ancient or modern...and then maybe we could see how much demand there is for a subbed c-drama.. now i am just stuck on what drama i should sub and how do i sub and do timing and all that stuff... :P

Stuck eh? I could help you out with that! How about Shen yi xia lyu?? :w00t: :lol I'm obsessed with that one and wants everyone to see it. But you should sub something you really like so you wouldn't get tired of it and stuff. I really want others to see an ancient type one because chinese ones are the best. Even though Jem posts quite a lot of ancient type ones, people here seem more interested in modern ones more. Since a lot of people like Damo, maybe there would be a little more interest? :roll

oh yeah, if anyone ever needs raws, I have a pretty decent amount of them.

I sent you a pm, crazyladychief. :D

I'd really like to see modern, romantic ones with beautiful gals in modern attire. I can't stand the crazy costumes in the period pieces. And heaven forbid if anyone should ever kiss in the ancient days. Let's stick to modern romances, especially set in Mainland China. And it would be even better if the setting was Shanghai. :D

Hey, bt-slut. Remember that one boy and girl thread that was here a long time ago? Well, I finally decided to take your guys' advice and translate it. My chinese is pretty bad, so how I ever managed to translate some of it is beyond me. :lol :blink I'll post the first episode when I come back from vacation, which is about a week. So, maybe that's something to look forward to.

Cool Kai Lien. Look forward to seeing your release. Enjoy your vacation--just hope it's not in Thailand. :-(

If anyone wants to get started subbing an ancient series, let me know. I think the lack of interest in them is only due to the lack of subbed ones available. There's no way ancient series are any less interesting than modern stories; the trick is to find quality ones, which I've found to be just as hard when it comes to watching modern stories.

Maybe we could start with a 'lighter' series, as in a not so serious/hard to understand one, that would be relatively easy to sub and garner some initial interest in the genre...?

hi, most of the movies in the list that i believe many people have seen already. How about that you do a poll on the list and let see which series that most people want to see. I think this is convience for the uploader and seed for others. If others already watch some of the series then they won't bother to download and seed. Then you wast time to upload them.

Creidesca, is this the series with Tse Kwan Ho, from the preview you provided some time ago? I'd love to see that one subbed.

Any chance of getting soft subs for A Step Into The Past? I've decided to d/l the Canto rmvb version, but it does not have subs. Even installed Real Media Player just to watch it ... not fond of Real Media ever since the program became invasive and wanted to take over the computer. Luckily version 10 did not seen to do that!

Please bring back War and Beauty

Post by PiTum » Jan 2nd, '05, 13:37

Hi all,

I'm new here, this site is the best I've seen! I love chinese costume series (with English subs).

I saw you used to share 30 episodes of War and Beauty, why is there no seeds anymore?
It's one of the best series of 2004 and has English subs (thanks to users here who have done a very good job on them).

Any chance of bringing them back ? It's a pity that only 40 users have this series, considering how long and how hard it took to make the English subtitles for it.

Let's make the Chinese series of the month ...please :roll

Do you understand how BT works? Someone has to actively offer it up for seeding for there to be "seeds". It's not like you just upload a file to some forum board or site and it stays there forever to be leeched by anyone. In order for there to be seeds for any file, someone has to actively be offering it for downloading. And there's no central authority mandating someone specific to be offering some files for downloading on a continuing basis. If there's no seeds, it's because no one cares to seed it.

There's a request section on this site for you to make your requests. But no gaurantees are made that it'll be fulfilled.

no, the Tse Kwan Ho series is a diff series that was based on a RPG game.

Warriors of the Yang Clan stars Alec Su, Chae Rim, and many others

maybe soft subs? just because you know how KSCI airs less than a full ep/night due to all those commercials that get inserted (and therefore, less # of KSCI episodes to post)

Yeah, I like soft subs better as well. I'm a little iffy on ripping that dvd. *prays that nothing will happen to me* I just hope I have the same version as the one they're airing.

Hi animetama! Yay. Another Alec fan! I loved him in hsds as well. Haven't finished watching this one yet but his hair looks good in this series. :lol Nice banner! Been staring at Alec for awhile there. :P And your avatar, where is that from? It's Jerry right? :lol
