My own picks

Will Win: Bae Yong-Joon
Should Win: Undecided (haven't seen Kim Myung-min's performance in White Tower)
White Tower didn't generate very good ratings, but there was terrific critical buzz on the show, and Kim Myung-Min's performance was an early standout throughout the year. Also White Tower took awards earlier this year. Other than that, I loved BYJ's performance in The Legend. If you take to his regal Yonsama style, then this was him in the highest brocades.
Will Win: Yoon Eun-Hye
Should Win: Gong Hyo-Jin
I could go either way with this one.

I think people VASTLY underestimate how difficult it is to pull off the transformation that YEH did for this role. It takes more than just coping a gait or talking in a low tone, it's about entirely remapping out your body language in a way in which your core emotions and thoughts are still correctly articulated from that unique gender space. How do you convey your attraction? How do you express your annoyance with your peers? How do you gob up your food? The beauty of her highwire act is in making the audience self-conscious about those male-female dynamics that creates that attraction and enable us to resolve our differences. It makes us observe their relationship very closely and enjoy all the small things.

Then again, it was also easy to understimate Gong Hyo Jin's performance in Thank You, due to the memorable characters and essemble acting across the board. GHJ makes this role look so easy that it's easy to overlook the nuances in her performance. Like Ruler of Your Own World, Thank You beautifully, beautifully depicted characters in difficult transition. Here, GHJ gives a precisely located performance of a woman who's neither "here" nor "there," still too much of a young woman -- the disgraced darling of her village -- to fully be an ajuhmma, unable to see beyond the needs of her present situation to see the backbreaking effect it's had on her. Her performance quietly subverts the "suffering mother" stereotype. She mantains passive-aggressive hostility she carries for her child's father. She is most vulnerable around the old woman, whom she sees as a kind of surrogate mother. Her skill as a mother is a constant challenge of not her heart, but her wits; her mothering is a constant act of problem solving. Instead of emphasizing a suffering purity, she chooses to emphasize the sexlessness, the self-negation of her femininity of her character.

I think what it comes down to is that, though Eun Hye did a wonderful creating this character, I felt she was still reaching to hit the right emotions in her character. You could just sense that she really pushed her skills here and hit her wall. That said, her best dramatic scene was when she started expressing how it felt like to not be seen as neither man nor woman by the man she loved, and that ties into just the most basic insecurities about your identity as a woman. Toward the last 1/4th of the show, when the conflict was resolved, she kinda rides on her mannerisms without showing how she's changed from the experience.

Go Hyun-Jung delivered a solid performance as the leader of the Homicide Investigation Team, but the real pull of that show's writing was in showing sensitively the relationships and real-problem dysfunction of her workforce. Also maybe it's due to fatigue from seeing some of America's finest actresses consistently kill this kind of alpha-female role, but I felt that her character was written better than the performance that came with it. I don't know. I fight this one a lot because HIT was my favorite action show of the year. And, it's the rare female-driven vehicle where her actual job -- and not a man -- is the means to resolving her emotional conflict.

Will Win: Lee Jun-Ki
Should Win: Gong Yoo
I didn't take to Lee Jun-Ki's performance as much as other people did. I thought he was delicious playing the baddie, but overall he struggled conveying the necessary masculinity needed to play a street guy. The intensity he conveyed over his revenge plans was about right, but also one note in an adolescent "you ruined my childhood!" way. It was overall a pretty good performance -- again, when allowed to just be a baaaaad baaaad man, it liberated him -- maybe on par with Song Il g**k's "High School Quarterback" turn as Jumong, and you can see his potential here, the desire to be taken as a serious actor.

I loved Jang Hyuk's frayed performance in Thank You. Jang Hyuk's like Kwang Ji Hwan in how both play "hotheads" with real fire in the belly, and yet can turn screaming into something that breaks your heart with empathy, or warms it with genuine affection. But it wasn't about being a curmedgeon, or about being a guy transformed by the women in his life. Instead the real appeal with Jang Hyuk's performance was that, from that volcanic disposition, he would get real sleepy in parts. Looking beyond the people he was talking with, not entirely aware of the situations he was in, his character beautifully played the part of a character so shell-shocked that he had a *difficult time* being himself . . .which is to be a curmedgeon, if not an outright ****.

That said, I think this should go to Gong Yoo. Coffee Prince's situation isn't credible without Eun Hye's performance. But Coffee Prince isn't actually good without Gong Yoo, who against a well-written character, really provides most of the emotional context of the story. Most dramas, especially recent trendies, focus on the lipstick and bling nuances of modern romance, but CP situates itself on the "garden state" of post-adolescence. That is, we don't have merely a male protoganist who's chaebol certified and not a little arrogant, but a murky, beautiful slacker who may be slightly depressed, slightly moody, slightly unable to have genuine emotional connection with people or the real world but for closest friends and his toys. He is worse than a troubled man; he is a creature of lonely habits. In other words, we have a person who could fall in love with a Eun Chan and be greatly disturbed by it, and then reconnected with himself, his friends and his family through it. In American cinema, we have Ryan Gosling Jr. falls in love with a blow-up doll. But this is almost as good! ;)

I think what I most liked about Lee Sung-Gyun in this role was kinda imagining him as a Kang Hyun Min rocker-turned-soundtrack specialist. Maybe at one time in his life, his character was in a rock band that didn't quite make it, and now he's settled into a successful career making music for MBC dramas and films.
Will Win: Han Ji-Min
Should Win: Han Ji-Min (haven't seen Wang Hee-ji's performance in Madam)

Will Win: Lee Philip

Will Win: Lee Ji-Ah

(But I would like Lee Ha-na to win this one. Ha-na is kind of a cross between Bae Doo Na and Jung Da Bin, bringing a bona fide bohemian sensibility to her performances.)

Will win: Gong Yoo

Will win: Yoon Eun-Hye

Will win: Gong Yoo & Yoon Eun-hye
Should win: Ji Hyun-woo & Lee Ha-na

And now the commentary:

I don't know about you, but I get major giggles with Bae Yong Jun winning the Netizen male popularity award, and BYJ/Lee Ji Ah inexplicably beating Coffee Prince as 2007 Favorite Couple. This is basically acknowledging that, Japanese ajuhmmas and the Wondergirl fanbase (no, really, the <25 audience was HUGELY popular with the Legend) both are in love with Yonsama. Smile those pearly whites like only you can BYJ -- you may be handicapped, you may have pissed off the MBC union, but you are once again the King of Korean drama and Prince of Tweeners everywhere!!!

I just feel the Eun Hye/BYJ drama coming. . . Book of Three Han Kyuls: Coffee Prince of Baekche!!

Overall they did a good job passing out the awards. There wasn't a blockbuster drama on the level of Jumong or Kim Sam Soon, but what got recognized were welcome trends in K-drama. Stuff for MBC to build on for 2008

1) An trendy romance that actually connected with a mainstream audience with its offbeat, unconventional look on relationships and an invigorated spin of rom-com mechanics

2) A fusion historical drama that raised the bar on production, succeeded in spite of its troubled history, and may relaunch international interest in Korean dramas

3) A critically popular remake of a Japanese drama classic that challenged audience's expectations of a Korean essemble drama

4) A heart-warming human drama that led a year of stunning performances by child actors

5) A good old fashioned sageuk that's part of a renewed intereste in historical dramas all across the board

Really nice to see Lee Sun-Gyun be recognized for his work in White Tower, rather than Coffee Prince.

Really really happy to see both Lee Ji-ah and Lee Ha-na recognized. I don't know how much more TV Gong Hyo-jin will do, but it's nice to see that the quirky/beautiful freak end of the K-drama actor/actress field continues beyond her. Also Ji-ah's one of us, an American-Asian transplant that made it.

People have been talking about Kim Myung-min really hitting stardom for a few years. Him winning another acting award for White Tower is good timing for his movie with star actress Son Yeh Jin, sexy thriller Open City, which opens in a few weeks.

Above all, happy that Gong Yoo finally has the hit drama that's eluded his career. He's played opposite Sung Yu Ri, Kim Tae Hee, Gong Hyo Jin, and even Kim Sun Ah in two separate films. For the love of God, he's not only done a Japanese film, but a Takashi Miike film! The dude even serenades. Good on him for finally coming through.

1) ADORABLE tango dance with the two child actors from Thank You. Ahhhhhh.

2) When they were showing nominations, among all the actors and actresses (including BYJ and YEH), Lee Jung Ki got BY FAR the loudest response.

3) Legend seemed to get the loudest response during nominations, with Coffee Prince really close behind.

3) When Han Sang-Jin won his award, it looked like he won Ms. USA. In addition to the award, the Yi San crew bumrushed the stage, gave him a wreath, a banner behind him held by court guards, and probably a ticket to Hawaii. H

4) Lee Ji Ah got Worst Dresser award -- mostly for her emo goth haircut. But trust me, after Hong Gil Dong, that will be the doo of 2008!!

5) After introducing Yi San, they cut to a group of fans outside. There appeared to be a HUGE section all about Eun Hye screaming her name. Seriously, her antis can just suck it! :D

6) Second adorable moment of night: child actress Seo Shin-ae (Thank You) started crying when accepting her award and covered her face with her gold hanbok

7) Probably should mention: that old bloke -- Kimg Chang-wan -- from Coffee Prince and other K-dramas is guitarist and singer of 70s seminal Korean rock band Sannullim. Yes kids, there was Korean music BEFORE Shinhwa and Seo Taji! Plus his wacked hair hasn't changed in 30 years either . . .

8) What is Tablo doing here? Why does Tablo look like Bae Yong Joon?

9) I didn't recognize the guy ostrich next to YEH when they were presenting their awards. Then I read that it was Jo Ji Hoon. Oh my Gawd. I think he lost another 15lbs since Mawang! :(

Each has their own awards show. It's less like the Emmys and more like those end-of-year corporate dinners to reward their employees for bringing in the dough, mixed with a MTV Movie Award-ish "thank you" from stars to fans. These award shows also mix in with each station's end of year festivities. This year, the Yi San crew did all sorts of silly, cheeky stuff on stage. Finally, it's a good way to guage what the station felt was "successful", regardless of pure ratings, providing direction for the next coming year. It was clear that MBC (like KBS) really identified with the success of their sageuks and fusion historical shows.

The KBS Awards show tend to be more entertaining. You can find Youtube clips of Song Hye Kyo serenading the audience to the 3 Bears song with a under-the-weather Rain being just adorably cheeky, So Ji Sup and Im So Jung (and So Ji Sup escorting Im So Jung from her table by the hand like a real gentleman . . . ) reciting lines from MiSa, and of Eun Hye and Oh Man Seok singing to their song from Vineyard Man.

The "real" award show is the Baeksang Art Awards in the springtime, which covers both movies and TV.
