I really have to thank 8thsin for subbing How to Become Myself. Narumi Riko is superb here; a great character actor. No wonder she is getting many lead roles even at this young age. (so thanks 8thsin for offering the torrent and giving the subs; couldn't have enjoyed more of Narumi Riko without your work!)

What an incredibly beautiful and talented young actress. I first saw her in 1 Litre of Tears and thought her portrayal of her character was really great. She's also had a bunch of movie leads and appearances, which is notable for a 15 year old girl (she can look both young and older, its amazing). How to Become Myself I thought was really great...Narumi Riko is bound to become a top actress in Japan(she already is actually lol).
Don't get me wrong, posting pics are fine.

Hahaha...
Found this funny clip of a radio program Narumi takes part in once in awhile. The radio broadcast was paired with some pictures taken during that broadcast and some other random Narumi pics. The program aired right around Halloween (hence the lil' pumpkin on the table )
The radio program is called Girls Locks!, and besides Narumi, the other hosts of the show are: Aragaki Yui, Eikura Nana, Horikita Maki, Toda Erika, and Kuriyama Chiaki. They take turns hosting the program every week of the month, but Narumi has the weird distinction of being the "5th week" host, so she isn't on nearly as much as the others (I think it's whenever a 5th week appears in a calendar month, she's on the air). You can find transcripts and pictures for each broadcast on the site.
Here's a quick translation (anything in [ ] are comments or clarifications by me):
This is the host of the School of Locks Girl's Class, Narumi Riko.
Good evening! It's been about 3 months [since I was last on]. This time it's the "Autumn Version". Since I've been absent, it looks like this school has entered into its 3rd year! Congratulations to its second year anniversary!
[Note: the "School of Locks" is a radio lineup that fashions itself so that each show is a "class". The other classes are "taught"/hosted by musicians Rip Slyme, Asian Kung Fu Generation, and YUI...Seems pretty cute, actually].
It looks like the live broadcast classroom is working on the "Young Flag" special, and I really wanted to go too. When I heard YUI, Asian Kung Fu Generation, etc were singing in Fukuoka, I thought, "What the heck? [That's not fair!]". Next year, I want to participate as well.
Speaking of live performances I've been to, I went to Dreams Come True's Wonderland concert. It was touching to hear them live. I had a lot of fun.
[Note: Dreams Come True sings the ending theme to Narumi's movie, "Kiimi shika kikoenai", so I'm sure there's some sort of tie-up involved with that little comment]
*rustling paper noise*
A piece of paper has just come in....
Huh? [Reading out loud] "The past year and a half I've been in this class has been a really mediocre period...." You're kidding me, a QUIZ?!
There's a question form, a pencil, and eraser. I feeling trapped now.
Well, let's give it a try!
Question form:
"Girls Locks 5th week host, Narumi Riko:
It's been a year and a half since you joined the School of Locks. It's been awhile, but because we want to show the listeners nationwide what your personality is like, and because we've gathered a ton of questions from bulletin boards and email, we're going to have a quiz!
As one of our school's students, answer all the questions whether you like them or not!
If you don't answer or get any questions wrong, you'll be held after class, so be aware!"
Hey!!!
Well, let's start!
Question 1: "Please write your name on the blackboard while explaining each character of your name."
Ok, here I go. *skritch skratch*
Naru. This Naru is -- Hey, don't you think it's uneven on the board [as in she can't put all 4 characters across the same line on the board]? Is this going to be alright? Well, this "naru" [成] is taken from the "sei" in "heisei" [平成].
Narumi's "mi" is taken from "umi" [海]. Narumi
Ri [璃]. I think I'll explain the "ri" as the "ri" in "ruri iro" [瑠璃色].
Ko[子]. Is the "ko" from "kodomo" [子供].
Narumi Riko [成海璃子]
Thanks
Okay, question 2: "What is your birthdate, zodiac sign, blood type, and brithplace?"
My birthdate is 1992.8.18. My zodiac sign is Leo.
My bloodtype is probably Type O.
I come from Kanagawa Prefecture.
Question 3: "This is a practical skill request. The students are requesting that you demonstrate how well you remember the song and dance for the Ecoglass commercials you appeared in. Please show us again"
Really?! You mean you want me to do it here? Uh, okay then...
"Dan dan da-da-dun. Announcement to Earthlings. Dan dan da-da-dun. Cut down CO2 emmissions. Dan-dan-dan-dan-dan-dan-dan. Common sense for the Earth, Ecoglass. Ecoglass." Gyah!! How embarrassing!
Yes, Ecoglass.
The dance is actually super easy. All you do is spin your arms while you bend your legs. That's really all there is to it. But this CM really affected a lot of ppl, and everybody says their favorite part about it is the dance. I was pretty surprised by that.
So that should end it for question 3.
Question 4: "Next, change the Ecoglass jingle to an advertisement for your drama that began in September, Juken no Kamisama." To the Ecoglass tune?
*music begins* What should I do?
"Dun dun da-da-dun. Changing to Juken no Kamisama!"
About Juken no Kamisama... I play a character named Sugawara Michiko. It was really hard, the technical skills. I had to practice things like Kyudo [Japanese archery] and how to throw a ball. And there was also solving questions to Todai [entrance exam questions to Tokyo University]... I worried a lot about how difficult it was, but it was really educational. I think it was a good experience. The sets were a lot of fun too.
...
The music for Ecoglass is still playing, but I think it's okay to move to the next question... ^_^;
Question 5: "The last question is another practical skill: Half a year a go, you said, 'I'll sing YUI-sensei's song next time, once I can sing it properly.' The students are asking, 'What happened to that promise?'"
Uh, about that.... I wish I hadn't said it!!
What can I do? It's embarrassing~~
*music plays - YUI's CHE.R.R.Y*
Starting from the refrain?
♪こ~い~しちゃったんだ~たぶん~
[As the crew turns on the reverb on the mic] Please give me a break here! Argh!
This is more embarrassing that the first time, but is this okay?
*music ends*
Well, that's it.
Okay, it's been awhile that tomorrow "that box" will come.
I wonder what that box will make me do....
Look forward to it tomorrow.
This was Narumi Riko!
*rustling paper noise*
Huh? I knew it would come back! The quiz....
It's even been graded...
Oh, wow! 100%
Huh, and it says, "You've gotten better"
They're all correct, right?
Oh no! The level has been raised though!
It says, "Next time, you will need to sing the whole song"
Wait a second! I reached my limit earlier! ^_^;;;
But I'm happy about the 100%.

The terrible thing about youtube is that you'll invariably find and click on something else you find interesting while you're there.
Here's another interesting interview w/ Narumi for Mezamashi TV last year (during the filming of the 1 Litre of Tears SP).
I thought the interviewer, Nakano Minako, was really funny , and overall it was pretty insightful.
Oh, and she really needs to find a hobby....
"Are you really 14 yrs old?! O_o"
standard disclaimer for translations: No, I don't really know any Japanese. I just know enough to scrape by.
==========
Narration:
14 yr old genius, Narumi Riko. The secret to her talent is...
Nakano Minako (NM):
What do you think about being called a genius?
Narumi Riko (NR):
I don't think I'm a genius at all.
I don't really know what a genius is, but I don't think there's such a thing as a genius that doesn't work hard to accomplishwhat they do.
I think a person who's called a genius is really somebody who works harder than others.
NM:
That must mean that there are times when you work very hard yourself.
NR:
I do work hard.
There's no such thing as something that is pointless. So if it's for a role, I'll do anything.
NM:
Is there anything you're particular about when you take on a role?
NR:
Recently, as I read scripts, I try to relate to the character's feelings without reading the fine print. When I read it over and over, I can see a lot of things. So when I pursue a role, my acting becomes very natural.
NM:
Huh? You're really 14 yrs old, right?!
Narration:
Today is the filming for the 1 Litre of Tears SP.
She's playing the role of a 23 yr old Ikeuchi Akko -- a charcater 9 years older than herself.
When we ask around at the set...
NM:
You're about to play a difficult scene. Have you settled exactly how you're going to play this part yet?
NR:
Nothing is ever completely determined with me.
Even if I decide before filming a scene that I won't cry, when we do start filming, sometimes I'll find myself crying all of a sudden.
Oftentimes, I feel the emotion build as I go. So depending on that, the way I act will change as well.
When I play a role, I disappear completely from within myself. During that time, there's only "Akko".
NM:
Are you really 14 yrs old? O_o;
Narration:
And during the actual take...
NM:
The script doesn't say anything about crying, but...
Watching this, I'm struck with how brilliant she is at acting.
Narration:
That afternoon, until the final cut was called, there were tears, tears, and more tears.
NM:
The filming was finished about 5-6 min ago, but it looks like she's still immersed in the emotions of the role she entered.
It might be because of these times that she's called a genius.
NM:
In the script, all that was written was, "....."
But when you suddenly began to cry, I thought to myself, "Huh? Wait, I though this wasn't a crying scene."
NR:
Yes. That happens a lot.
NM:
So it isn't so much that you think to yourself, "I think I'll cry here."
You begin to cry after you've started due to the emotion?
NR:
Yeah. After the director calls, "Action!", the first thing that happens is that my self disappears.
NM:
So Narumi Riko is no longer there?
NR:
That's right. I've become Akko. I don't know myself what will become of Akko, but because I'm moved by Akko's feelings, the tears begin.
Narration:
On a different set, we meet Jinnai Takanori, who plays Akko's father.
Jinnai Takanori (JT):
Mezmashi (TV)?
Hey! Are they following you around?
NR:
Oh. Yes.
JT:
Riko, right?
You're not following me, right?
JT:
She's becoming more grown up.
NR:
Am I?
JT:
Do you have a boyfriend?
NR:
No!
JT:
She gives off a sparkling aura. I think it's wonderful.
Narration:
During this monitor check, Jinnai also gives some stern words of advice...
JT:
Hey, Riko! Get over here! Mezmashi TV is filming!
You have to make sure you're presence is seen!
It's no good if you're not on camera!
NR:
Ok... ^_^;;;
Narration:
Narumi was born on Aug 18, 1992 in Kanegawa Prefecture.
Because she said she wanted to be on TV, she began her career in the entertainment industry when she was 5 yrs old.
When we watched a role she played in the "Wedding Planner" when she was 9 yrs old...
NR:
Hahaha... Cute!
I can't believe that's me.
At the time, I thought I was acting really mature and adult-like. But when I watch now, all I can see is how much of a child I was.
NM:
Do you ever wish you could go back to being just a normal girl?
NR:
Never. I don't think it's even possible for me to think that way.
Even in my private time when I go out for fun or something... I never forget that I'm an actress.
I feel really very comfortable and natural on filming sets. But when I go shopping or go to school, that's when it's as if I've turned on a switch.
NM:
What are you most interested in right now?
NR:
Something I'm interested in?
You mean outside of acting? o_o;;;
NM:
Something you're interested in outside of acting, if you can.
NR:
Hmmm.... outside of acting, what could it be? ^_^;;;
NM:
What do you like best after acting then?
NR:
I don't know...
I can't think of anything! ^_^;
NM:
Nothing?!
NR:
Why is that?
NM:
Are there times when you think you're still a child? (i.e in which circumstances do you feel immature)
NR:
I show all my emotions clearly on my face.
For instance, when I get irritated, even though I try really hard not to show my irritation, my face completely gives it away. It looks like I'm really pissed off.
And there are times when I'm not completely genuine either. Sometimes there's something I really want to say, but I can't bring myself to say it and something weird will come out insead. And I'll think, I should have been honest.
NM:
Those aren't childlike qualities at all. ^_^;;;
NR:
They aren't?!
Narration:
Currently, Narumi is working as a model for the magazine "Hanachu". TO her, the set is a place for her to refresh herself.
Question: What do you guys usually talk about?
NR:
I often ask everybody about school.
I'll ask younger girls, "How's school going?" or something like that. I feel really old.
Other girls:
[In that tone of voice] You sound like an adult!
But that tone is really calming and peaceful.
NR:
... So she says....
Narrtion:
But when she laughs, she looks just like any other 14 yr old girl.
But what does she think about love?
NM:
What about love?
NR:
I don't really know about love, so I guess I like the unrealistic kind.
Like the type of guys you see in manga. In the manga Hachimitsu and Clover, there're two guys named Morita and Mayama and I like them both about the same. At first, I really liked Mayama, but then I started going back and forth between them.
NM:
When you read...
NR:
I really get involved!
Narration:
Narumi Riko has grown up in the 9 years of her career, from her start at the age of 5 to the adult roles she plays. But the contrast of her straightforward and unforgiving attitude might be what gives distinction to this beautiful, invincible 14 yr old.
NM:
Is there a role you'd like to play?
NR:
I'd like to try a comedy.
Like something Mitani Koki might write.
It seems really hard, but I want to challenge myself with difficult things right now.
I don't want to become accustomed to it.
If I get used to ppl saying, "You did a good job," I won't be pleased.
NM:
Wow... O_o
I bet you're the most mature person in this room right now...
Here's another interesting interview w/ Narumi for Mezamashi TV last year (during the filming of the 1 Litre of Tears SP).

NR:
Ok... ^_^;;;
You mean outside of acting? o_o;;;
NM:
Something you're interested in outside of acting, if you can.
NR:
Hmmm.... outside of acting, what could it be? ^_^;;;
NM:
What do you like best after acting then?
NR:
I don't know...
I can't think of anything! ^_^;
NM:
Nothing?!
NM:
Those aren't childlike qualities at all. ^_^;;;

Thanks for another great picspam tease
I watched the movie a while ago and I think those are it.pet family wrote:the 3rd hidden is come from j-movie How to Become Myself right?
I've never heard of it. I just checked the dramawiki for it, it has such an odd storyline lol. Looks like Narumi has an interesting personality in this one. Reminds me of the movie Shindo where she plays the snot-nosed and cheeky piano prodigy hehe.mingming96 wrote:is juuken no kamisama is a good series?i'm thinking of watching it.
