How to burn MKV file to DVD?

Post by Sny » Jan 25th, '09, 20:57

Hi.. I've been searching the internet for days now.. I'm at the edge of giving up. Does somebody know how to burn MKV file to DVD by using a free software (download from the internet)?

I have 1.5 gb mkv file that I would like to burn to a dvd. Should I convert it to an avi file first? I know how to work around avi file, but, mkv is a new thing to me. If I convert it to an avi file, is it going to lower the quality of the picture?

Which one is a better way : burn mkv to dvd or convert to avi then burn it to dvd?

Please .. help me. Thank you very much!

I'll give you a noob explanation until someone can come along and explain it better :lol

Situation 1 (use convertXtodvd): I don't do too much DVD burning but I do know that ConvertXtoDVD accepts MKV files for DVD burning. ConvertXtoDVD is however not free (a trial version is though), but easily obtainable for free ( :whistling: ) off basically any public general purpose torrent tracker. If you do end up using this software, it would be pointless to convert it to avi since both containers are accepted.

Situation 2 (don't use convertx and mkv file is composed of xvid/divx/wmv+mp3): However if you're looking to use other software for DVD burning, you may need to convert it to avi then. To answer your question about it lowering the quality of the file, it hopefully shouldn't. Depending on how you "convert to avi", you're basically only demuxing the video and audio streams from the mkv and remuxing them into an avi container.

Situation 3 (don't use convertx and mkv codecs are h264+aac/something else somewhat unsupported): The codecs of the mkv streams could be codecs that the avi container does not support such as h264 and aac (not without a hack or something I think) in which case you would need to convert each stream to say xvid and mp3 and remux into avi or just use a converter like SUPER to do it all for you. Now to go a bit further into lowering of picture quality, if the previous situation is the case, theoretically you would get a reduced picture quality for the same filesize if you were to use an xvid+mp3 combination versus a h264+aac combination.

So really to finally answer your question, it depends on what codecs your mkv is composed of and which DVD burning software you're planning to use. I hope I didn't confuse you too much. I just didn't want to go too far into it without assuming we're on the same page

I don't mind a noob explanation, I wish they wrote a book for dummy how to burn mkv to dvd :lol

Situation 1. I actually did download convertXtodvd (the trial version). And, it seems really easy, however, it can only burn 20% and the worst part is you can see blinking ads in the middle of the movie, says "Please buy... " or something like that, and it showed up so many times :blink . I deleted the program (well.. I can't complain 'cause it's a trial version, right? :lol )

Situation 2. Do you know what free software I can use to convert mkv to avi?

Situation 3. Sorry for my stupidity. I found it's a bit difficult to understand this part. It's ok.. I'll read it again, and try to understand.

One more thing, you said "...it depends on what codecs your mkv is composed of ...."
How do I find out about this ?

Thank you so much for your explanation :-) . You're awesome!

basics

use "gspot" to determine what codecs you'll be dealing with.

1. extract files/streams from within the mkv, use "mkvextract"
2. convert streams to a workable format:

if the video file has the following file extensions, .h264 or .264
they must be extracted/converted with "avc2avi"
if the video is in .avi format it might be easier to work with.

as far as audio, you'll run into .ac3 files or .ogg files
i dont quite know what format you'll need to convert to

subtitle files or .srt files, can be hard subbed into the .avi file
by using vdubmod...

3. i think you can use ffmpeg to convert the files into .vob format
then drag those vob files to your favorite burning program.

most of the above is true, some speculation, but if you're trying to do
this "gratis" you're going to have to go thru alot of trial and error.

i apologize for not having links to the programs mentioned here.
please check out videohelp.com for links to the above mentioned
tools as well as guides on how to use them.

good luck

EienPrelude, when I read about 'keygen', I knew what I had to do.. (thank you!)

For those who wants to burn mkv file to dvd. There are some websites you can download convertxtodvd (not the trial version). And I finally be able to use it.
This program works pretty good. You might want to check this site to learn how to use it:
