We’ve all had that experience where you see a pair of frames for your glasses that you like, they look great on the model, but they look awful or just unimpressive when you put them on. You try pair after pair, but nothing seems to work. It can be very frustrating to struggle to find the right glasses for you. The problem isn’t you. The models are expertly fitted with glasses to suit their face shape. The secret to picking the right glasses for you is to pick your glasses according to your face shape.
The first thing to realize is that nobody has the perfect facial shape. There is nobody with the perfect square, heart, diamond, round or oval face. The most common facial shape has one dominant shape with features from other face shapes. So what you have to look for is the facial shape category that most jibes with you. You are not looking for a perfect match.
If you like a frame but it’s not the perfect fit, just own it. You don’t have to live by anyone’s rules. That said, here are some rules to use your face shape to pick the right glasses for your face.
Round Faces
Round faces are typically thought of as being “baby faces”. Well, they’re just round faces and adults have them too. They feature smooth lines, soft curves, and the kind of fullness that makes a person appear younger than they are. So you’re looking for a pair of glasses that offset your face’s uniformity and add a subtle but present sharpness. Look for angular, bold, or upswept glasses which highlight your eyes and cheekbones.
Oval faces
If you have an oval face, then you can wear basically any kind of glasses and look good. Oval faces are the most balanced because the cheekbones are just wider than your jaw and forehead, giving a sense of wonderful proportion. You can try bold frames, but you should try and avoid very narrow ones. Get the frame that is about as wide as the widest part of your face.
Square faces
If you have a square face, then you have a broad forehead and a strong jaw. The top and bottom of your face have a similar width. The length of your face is about equal to its width.
If you have a square face, then you should get glasses that sit high on your nose and add some length. People with square faces look good in rounded frames. Rounded frames have the effect of softening your face. If you want your face to look longer or thinner, then you need a frame that is wider than the widest part of your face.
Heart-Shaped Face
A heart-shaped face is one with a sweeping curve starting from the forehead and reaching down to the jaw. The face is widest where the brow is and narrows gradually toward the jaw. A person with a heart-shaped face will typically have prominent cheekbones and their chin will be pointed. As with oval faces, there are many possibilities, but you should try and stay away from oversized glasses or very out there glasses.
Diamond-Shaped Faces
A person with a diamond-shaped face is blessed with a dramatic facial shape. The narrowest parts of the face are the jaw and the forehead and they have broad, usually high cheekbones. You should look at getting frames with lots of design elements on the top, or which have bold browlines because they will even out the angles of your face shape by accentuating your temples and brow.
