Which old records could soon be broken?

Erling Haaland, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Christine Sinclair are among the players who could set records this year. Let’s take a look at what to expect from them.

7

Lionel Messi could win FIFA’s highest annual individual award for the seventh time at The Best FIFA Football Awards. Marta has also won it six times.

Brazilian sensation Amandinha is a major contender to be named Best Female Footballer for the ninth year in a row.

200

The race for the title of the first man to win the 200 international awards has begun. Bader Al-Mutawa of Kuwait and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal, both nearing their 38th birthdays, are neck-and-neck with 196 appearances.

622

Joaquin is just 17 appearances short of breaking Andoni Zubizarreta’s record of 622 La Liga appearances. The 41-year-old has only played five times in Spain’s top division this season, while Real Betis have yet to play 24 games.

Joaquin’s contract runs until the end of the 2022/23 season, and it remains to be seen whether he will extend his deal at the club where he is idolized.

34

Thirty-four is the record for goals in a Premier League season, shared by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer in 1993/94 and 1994/95, respectively – both with 42 goals. Erling Haaland scored 21 goals in 15 appearances during the 2022/23 season – an average of 1.40 goals per game.

To break the record, the 22-year-old needs to score 14 goals in Manchester City’s remaining 20 games – 0.70 goals per game.

96

Thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 38 goals in 31 games, Paris Saint-Germain has picked up 96 points in the 2015/16 season, a record in Ligue 1. PSG now has 44 points out of a possible 48, which is significantly better than seven years ago: 2.75 compared to 2.53.

Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Co. are also on track to become the only team in Ligue 1 history to finish the season without defeat. Nantes currently holds the record for the fewest defeats: just one in the 1994/95 season.

Mbappe, who is three goals ahead of second-placed Neymar in the scoring charts, could become the French league’s top scorer for the fifth time, equaling the record held by Carlos Bianchi, Delio Onnis, and Jean-Pierre Papin, who is only 24.
