One of the best types of vacation is the road trip. A road trip is made even better when you do it on the back of a motorcycle. It is a great way to get off the beaten path and see the world from a different perspective. It can also be quite dangerous, so it is important to make sure that you are prepared.
Even if you take good care of your motorcycle and keep it in the best motorcycle shed while keeping up with maintenance, you do still need to prepare things so you can stay safe while on the road, such as the proper safety gear. In this article, we will cover some of the things you need to prepare a motorcycle for a road trip.
1 – Check the tires
You’ll be on the road for hours at a time, and if there are any problems with the tires, then it will be a safety issue. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in each tire. The recommended tire pressure for your motorcycle can usually be found in the owner’s manual or on a placard on the motorcycle itself.
To check the tread depth, use a tread depth gauge or a penny. To use a penny, insert it into the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tread is worn, and the tire should be replaced.
2 – Check the chain or belt
By regularly checking and maintaining your chain or belt, you can help ensure that it is in good condition and working properly. If you have any concerns about the condition of your chain or belt, it’s best to have a mechanic check it. However, you can do the check yourself if you feel confident.
The chain or belt should be tight enough that it doesn’t sag but not so tight that it causes the wheel to be difficult to turn. To check the tension, you can use a chain tension gauge or a ruler. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt or debris from the chain or belt.
If your motorcycle has a chain drive, use a chain lubricant to lubricate the chain. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type and amount of lubricant to use.
3 – Check the fluid levels
By regularly checking the fluid levels on your motorcycle, you can help ensure that it is running smoothly and safely. On most motorcycles, you will find the fluid reservoirs for the oil, coolant, and brake fluid under the seat or in a compartment on the side of the motorcycle.
To check the oil level, locate the oil dipstick and remove it. Wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then remove it again. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick.
To check the brake fluid level, locate the brake fluid reservoir and look at the level in the transparent tank. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
